The most current version should be used, when making choices for post-primary institutions. I. This information document should be carefully studied by the candidate together with their parents or guardians. 2. The parents or guardians together with the candidates should contact the Head of the School so that they may decide on the following: a) Whether the child should put a SECONDARY SCHOOL, TECHNICAL SCHOOL, OR COMMUNITY POLYTECHNIC AS FIRST CHOICE. b) The order of choices for the Secondary Schools and also for the Technical Schools, Farm Schools and Community Polytechnics. c) Secondary Schools have been categorized as follows: i. USE (Government) ii. Non- USE (Government) iii. USE (Private) iv. Non-USE (Private Schools) 3. (a) For the secondary school option, the candidate should make FOUR CHOICES of his/her order of interest. They may all be either Boarding or Day Schools or Both. NOTE: Past experience has shown that many candidates with reasonably good aggregates fail to gain admission into schools of their choices. The main reason for this is that these candidates select only popular schools, such as Kisubi, Mwiri, Ntare, Budo, Teso College, Comboni, Layibi College, Namagunga, Gayaza, Tororo Girls, Mary Hill, Makerere College, etc. These popular schools always have a large number of applicants hence the competition for them is also acute and the places are usually filled up with the candidates of Division 1 and only those with aggregates 4 - 6. Therefore, a candidate is advised that if the 1st choice is among these schools mentioned above or of the category by popularity to pupils and parents, his/her second, third and fourth choices should be in less competitive schools. You should consider all the four choices to be equally important. A general guide is for the average pupils to choose a wide range of schools even if these schools may not be so famous or even if they may not be boarding schools. Candidates intending to choose day schools are advised to select schools in places where they can find accommodation. Private schools have now been included here and applicants are free to include any of them among their choices. b) Make FOUR CHOICES FOR TECHNICAL SCHOOLS OR COMMUNITY POLYTECHNICS. 4. (a) Change of choices will not be accepted once the entry forms have been submitted for processing by the Admission Committee of the Ministry of Education and Sports. (b) Selection for Post-Primary Institutions will be based only on the choices that appear on the U.N.E.B entry (P.L.E.) forms. Selection is based on 1st choice, but other choices are equally important. (c) Exactly the same choices that a candidate makes on the P.L.E entry forms should be the ones to be entered on the Ministry of Education and Sports Application "Form X". Every school is advised to keep a copy of the entries in order to cross check with choices to be put on "Form X". 6 Placement Information Guide For Primary Seven Leavers 2017 Edition 5. (a) Heads of Schools should make sure that four characters are used when entering codes of Secondary Schools on entry forms. Codes of secondary schools have been changed, by giving them Selection Code numbers for example: 1001, 1007, 1011 etc. Heads of schools should ensure that candidates fill the new selection codes and not the UNEB center numbers of the schools. (b) Codes of Technical Schools have been changed by giving them Numbers for Technical School, for example: 6001, 6002 etc. 6. For a candidate to qualify to be admitted, the candidate must have passed P.L.E., at least with passes in all the subjects. For the purpose of benefitting from the USE programme, eligible candidates will have scored an average aggregate of between 4 and 28. However, this depends on pass scores, and is subject to change from time to time. 7. This is the most up-to-date document. DO NOT USE THE OLD EDITIONS. Any alterations and amendments will be communicated to you later. NB: PLEASE KEEP THIS INFORMATION BOOKLET FOR FUTURE SCHOOL REFERENCES. • Impact of the Black Twig Borer on Robusta Coffee in Mukono and Kayunga Districts, Central Uganda

Box 7267, Kampala, Uganda § Corresponding author email: [email protected] Key words: Black twig borer, coffee, incidence, damage 1 SUMMARY An outbreak of a “serious” pest of coffee was reported in Mukono and Kayunga districts in central Uganda in December 2008. In response, a survey was carried out in the two districts to determine the identity, spread, incidence and damage caused by the pest. The pest was preliminarily identified as the black twig borer, Xylosandrus compactus (Eichhoff), which was found on coffee in both districts infesting 37.5% of the surveyed Robusta coffee farms. The infestation in Mukono was higher than in Kayunga, being 50 and 8.3%, respectively. The percentage of trees attacked (incidence) in the two districts was 21.2, with 3.7% of their twigs bored (damaged). Mukono district had a much higher incidence (35.3%) and damage (4.9%) compared to Kayunga with 0.8% for both parameters. The most serious damage was recorded in Namuganga and Nabbaale subcounties in Mukono district, the apparent epicentre of the outbreak. It was evident that the pest was spreading to other subcounties surveyed within and outside Mukono district.
