BVI (The British Virgin Islands) trip, Spring 2019 (March 21-29) Columbus Academy Chaperones: J. Davis, K. Castle, and Blue Water Ventures Dates: 21 March 2019- 29 March 2019 Cost: $3300.00/participant
Trip Overview: The goal of the trip is to expose participants to the natural history and the culture of the West Indies. Participants will camp in a beachfront campground for 3 days and then spend 5 days sailing around the British Virgin Islands. Students will be snorkeling in and learning about coral reef ecosystems, exploring Caribbean terrestrial habitats, and meeting local islanders in order to better understand the West Indian culture.
Itinerary
Day 1, Thursday, March 21
Students will fly to St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands (Charlotte Amalie) from Columbus through Atlanta. We will then take a ferry to Tortola (British Virgin Islands) and arrive in Roadtown. A taxi takes us to Brewers Bay where we get settled in camp.
Day 2, Friday, March 22
We take a morning hike to Frankie’s Rock, and then hear a world-renowned geology lecture from a retired Academy science teacher. In the afternoon, we snorkel in Brewers Bay and then have a brief activity involving invertebrate animals.
Day 3, Saturday, March 23
In the morning we work at Michael Lloyd’s farm. In the afternoon, we have some beach time. We will then walk over to Cane Garden Bay, explore the town, eat dinner at Rhymer’s Gazebo and then enjoy reggae music provided by local legend Quito Rhymer.
Day 4, Sunday, March 24
We board the sailboats by 12 Noon for a 5-day tour of the Virgin Islands and then we set sail for Virgin Gorda where we overnight at Mountain Point off of the island.
Day 5, Monday, March 25
We go ashore in the morning where we explore the Baths and we hike around Virgin Gorda. We overnight off of the north end of Virgin Gorda.
Day 6, Tuesday, March 26
We sail all day, headed for Anegada Island, a large coral island with a large fringing reef. This relatively uninhabited island will be a great place to snorkel.
Day 7, Wednesday, March 27
After a brief hike on Anegada where we try to see the elusive flamingoes in the ponds of Anegada, we sail to Tortola. We make our way along to the north side of Tortola ending up at the island of Jost van Dyke where we overnight in the harbor.
Day 8, Thursday, March 28
We spend the last day of our sailboat excursion by sailing our way along the west side of Tortola to Norman Island, with stops at the Caves and the Indians for some world class snorkeling. We will spend our last night moored off of Norman Island.
Day 9, Friday, March 29
We sail early for Tortola and we get off the boats in the AM, travel by boat taxi to St. Thomas and then fly back to Columbus, Ohio through Atlanta.
