Burkhardt Associate Professor Kelly O’Neill Abstract This dissertation follows the collection and cultivation of plants in the Russian Empire for medicinal and botanical purposes from the beginning of the seventeenth to the end of the eighteenth centuries. It focuses on the itineraries of collection and the spaces of cultivation established by herbalists, doctors, and naturalists in the employ of the Apothecary (Medical) Chancellery and the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. In doing so it investigates how methods of botanical collection, including specific itineraries, influenced the creation spaces of botanical cultivation, including gardens, collections of correspondence and regional Floras. This juxtaposition and analysis of the mutual influence between routes and gardens ultimately attempts to explore how mobility and space intersected with the production of natural knowledge in the early modern Russian context. The first chapter of this dissertation, “Travniki and the Chancellery,” details the seventeenth-century network of itinerant herbalists [travniki] who collected plants, flowers, roots and seeds seasonally for the Apothecary Chancellery’s pharmacies and gardens. The travels of the Chancellery’s travniki are contrasted with the trade in materia medica, which included medicinal plants as well as chemical medicines, found in the herb stalls [zeleinye riady] of Moscow’s trading quarters.

    Pehr Kalm Revival Pehr Kalm Pehr Kalm (1716–1779) var sin tids mest kända finländska vetens- kapsman. Hans rykte byggde på den reseskildring han skrev om Jan-Erik Andersson 2012 Nordamerikas natur och folk. Hans vetenskapliga intresse var en empirisk beskrivning av naturen och den ekonomiska nytta som detta gav. Kalm föddes i en österbottnisk familj på flykt i Norrland. Han gick i skola i Vasa och inledde sina studier vid Akademien i Åbo år 1735. Skulptural pergolastruktur med organisk form.     The Professor and the Body Politic: Pehr Kalm and the Social Imaginary in Eighteenth-Century Turku1 Mathias Persson This article investigates the representations of society in a number of mid-eighteenth-century dissertations supervised by Pehr Kalm (1716−1779), a disciple of Linnaeus and a well-known professor of economics in Turku (Åbo), against the background of the strong ties that tended to bind early modern literati to the ruling elites. The article consists of four thematic sections, which examine how the dissertations conceptualized the body politic, the powers that be, the populace and the scholars. All in all, Kalm and his students adhered to a fairly traditional social imaginary, although their renderings of their own caste, the men of learning, as indispensable for progress and the common good foreboded a later, expert-centric era. Introduction The purpose of this article is to analyse how society was represented in a number of mid-eighteenth- century dissertations presided over by Pehr Kalm (1716−1779), a Linnaean disciple and renowned professor of economics in Turku (Åbo), against the background of the political and social bonds that tied early modern scholarship to the powers that be. Kalm took a keen interest in economic matters, which tended to occupy a salient place on the agenda of eighteenth-century Swedish men of letters, not least at the Royal Academy of Turku (Kungliga Akademin i Åbo, Turun akatemia), a hotspot for utility- oriented efforts to improve society and enhance the fatherland. The importance of Scientific Academies Scientific academies have played major roles in the development of science. Plato’s Academia outside Athens was the starting point around 387 BC. However, it was not until the seventeenth century, when scientific thinking based on observations and experiments gradually became dominating, that scientific academies were founded in many countries, like Germany 1652, England 1660, and France 1666. A key-person in the creation the Uppsala academy was Erik Benzelius the Younger (1675-1743) (Figure 1). He was the son of Archbishop Erik Benzelius the Elder in Uppsala, Sweden. Like a number of other young men (in those days it was essentially only men) of the upper classes, the younger Benzelius made an educational journey abroad, in order to learn manners, to 2 meet influential people, and to hear about current thinking.

One day students learnt a name for a particular plant e.g. Ocimum sanctum L. for Tulsi with great difficulty and after a few years surprisingly teacher in the taxonomy class says that the correct scientific name for Tulsi is Ocimum tenuiflorum L. Isn’t it confusing? In addition, they are expected to remember so many such difficult names of plants for the examination. At that time one wonders who the person responsible for all these confusions is. And, let me tell you the main culprit is none other than Carl Linnaeus. Looking back, it is found that there was a big confusion in his own Swedish name of this great naturalist. He was known in the name of Carolus Linnaeus, Carl Linnae, Carl Linnaeus, Carl von Linné, etc. But he used the Latinized form of his name “Carolus Linnaeus” the most when he published his scientific works in Latin. His surname Linnaeus is also an adopted one. Carl’s paternal grandfather like most of the Swedish peasants of his time had no surname.
