On a daily basis you will cycle through a variety of flat landscapes through charming villages and historic cities while cruising along the impressive waterways of Zeeland, the River Schelde and the picturesque Vecht and Lek Rivers. The tour is perfect for families who want to cycle together and enjoy barge life or, for that matter, anyone wanting to enjoy a delightful week of cycling to a long list of historic destinations. In collaboration with: Boat Bike Tours. Day to Day Day 1 Amsterdam - Vianen Embarkation and check-in where the crew will welcome you on board is at 1 p.m. At around 2 p.m. the ship will depart from Amsterdam for Vianen, a small fortified village on the Lek River. After dinner you have the opportunity to enjoy a short first test ride through the surrounding area. Day 2 Vianen – Schoonhoven – Kinderdijk – Dordrecht 32 km Today you will cycle along a beautiful route to Schoonhoven – nicknamed Zilverstad (“Silver City”) – a city renowned for its talented silver smiths since the 17th century. Later in the day as you cycle through the Alblasserwaard region you will reach Kinderdijk, a village famous for its impressive row of 19 large windmills. All 19 windmills have a UNESCO cultural heritage listing and are a definite highlight – you will have the opportunity to visit one so don’t forget to bring your camera! From nearby Alblasserdam you will take the “Waterbus”, a fast ferry, that will take you and your bicycle in approx. 10 minutes to Dordrecht, one of the oldest towns in Holland. (32 km / 19mi. or 56 km / 34 mi.) Day 3 Dordrecht – Willemstad – Tholen – Kreekrak lock – Antwerp 36 km As you enjoy your breakfast aboard the ship, the ship will sail to Willemstad where you will start your day’s cycling. Willemstad is a beautiful old fortified town on the Haringvliet waterway. Your bicycle ride goes to Tholen, once was an island in the middle of the large Zeeland streams, where many people fished for their living. Nowadays Tholen is connected to the mainland in various ways. But it is still a picturesque village with many relics of an eventful past. In the afternoon you will once again board the ship which will sail to the port city of Antwerp, situated on the river Schelde. Antwerp is famous for handling up to 80% of the world’s rough diamonds and is a city with a long list of attractions including: the City Hall, one of several majestic buildings constructed during the Renaissance period, the historical City Square Grote Market, the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe Cathedral and the medieval Steen Castle. After dinner you can visit the beautiful old city center. (26 km / 23 mi. or 44 km / 28 mi.) Amsterdam-Bruges Boat tour - 8 dagen Day 4 Antwerp Today your barge stays in Antwerp. This means you will have an entire day to discover this city of culture, filled with cobblestones, and Flemish Baroque masterpieces. You can visit the Rubens House, the palazzo where the brilliant and versatile artist lived with his family. You will find some of his paintings to admire just a ten-minute walk away in the “Onze Lieve Vrouwe (Our Dear Lady) Cathedral.” Other ideas for spending a pleasant afternoon here are to visit the famous beer brewery of ‘de Koninck’ for a tour and tasting, explore the fascinating Museum on the Scheldt River (MAS — Museum aan de Stroom) or go shopping in Antwerp’s welcoming shopping area. Dinner tonight is not included as you have the chance to dine at a restaurant of your choosing. If needed, your crew can provide restaurant recommendations. Day 5 Antwerp – Temse – St. Amands 34 km This morning you will cycle out of Antwerp along a picturesque section of the Schelde River to St. Amands your home for the night. There is only one way to describe the landscape around the Schelde and that is “magnificent”. It is without doubt one of the natural highlights of the tour. (34 km / 21 mi. or 49 km / 31 mi.) Day 6 St. Amands – Dendermonde – Ghent 52 km Today you will continue to follow the river Schelde to Ghent where the ship will moor for the night at a lock in a suburb of town. Ghent is a lively university city that boasts a rich history. Since Roman times Ghent’s position at the junction of Leie and Schelde Rivers has ensured that it has been a successful trading port. In total the city features an Opera House, 18 museums, more than 100 churches and over 400 historical buildings. Major attractions are St. Bavo Cathedral where a number of masterpieces of medieval art including the world famous ‘Adoration of the Mystic Lamb’ by Jan van Eyck are kept and the 91-metre-tall belfry of Ghent, one of three medieval towers that overlook the old city center. Before dinner a small canal boat will take you for a guided tour through the historic city. (52km / 32 mi.) Day 7 Ghent – Bruges 22 km Today you will cycle from Ghent through the beautiful Flemish countryside of western Flanders to Bruges, widely described as the ‘Venice of the North’ and arguably the most beautiful of all the Flemish cities. Bruges attracts more than two million visitors every year who come to see the picturesque medieval town center of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic city and a long list of historic attractions. An outstanding example of a medieval historic settlement, Bruges has managed to maintain its historic fabric as it has evolved over the centuries, with the result that today the city’s original Gothic buildings form an integral part of the town’s identity. While you are here you can visit one of Bruges many museums or simply take in the stunning beauty and culture of this unforgettable city from the comfort of a sidewalk café. (22 km / 13 mi. or 45 km / 28 mi.)

And rightly, too. Authorities, from municipal to European level, are endeavouring to respond. The oldest level of government in the Netherlands, that of the waterschappen, is also moving with the times in providing customised service for today’s society. This sets requirements on the tasks and the way in which they are carried out. But above all, it sets requirements on the way in which society is involved in water governance. We have produced this booklet for the interested outsider and for those who are roughly familiar with water management. It provides an understanding of what waterschappen are and do, but primarily how waterschappen work as government institutions. Special attention is paid to organisation, management and financing. These aspects are frequently raised in contacts with foreign representatives. The way we arrange matters in the Netherlands commands respect all over the world. The waterschap model is an inspiring example for the administrative organisations of other countries whose aims are also to keep people safe from flooding and manage water resources.

The Amsterdam area, a highly manipulated delta area formed by polders and reclaimed lakes, struggles with high 13 nutrient levels in its surface water system. The polders receive spatially and temporally variable amounts of water and 14 nutrients via surface runoff, groundwater seepage, sewer leakage, and via water inlet from upstream polders. Diffuse 15 anthropogenic sources, such as manure and fertilizer use and atmospheric deposition, add to the water quality problems in 16 the polders. The major nutrient sources and pathways have not yet been clarified due to the complex hydrological system in 17 such lowland catchments with both urban and agricultural areas. In this study, the spatial variability of the groundwater 18 seepage impact was identified by exploiting the dense groundwater and surface water monitoring networks in Amsterdam 19 and its surrounding polders. Twenty-five variables (concentrations of Total-N, Total-P, NH4, NO3, HCO3, SO4, Ca, and Cl in 20 surface water and groundwater, N and P agricultural inputs, seepage rate, elevation, land-use, and soil type) for 144 polders 21 were analysed statistically and interpreted in relation to sources, transport mechanisms, and pathways.

Devel- opments in water safety, water quality, and robust water infrastructure transitioned Amsterdam into an attractive, economically healthy, and safe city that scores highly in the field of water management. However, investments need to be continued to meet future challenges. Many other cities in the world have just started their transition to become water-wise. For those cities, it is important to assess current water management and governance practices, in order to set their priorities and to gain knowledge from the experiences of more advanced cities such as Amsterdam. We investigate how Amsterdam’s water management and governance developed historically and how these lessons can be used to further improve water management in Amsterdam and other cities. This retrospective analysis starts at 1672 and applies the City Blueprint Approach as a baseline water management assessment.

Living with Rivers Netherland Plain Polder Farmers' Migration to and through the River Flatlands of the states of New York and New Jersey Part I 1 Foreword Esopus, Kinderhook, Mahwah, the summer of 2013 showed my wife and me US farms linked to 1700s. The key? The founding dates of the Dutch Reformed Churches. We followed the trail of the descendants of the farmers from the Netherlands plain. An exci- ting entrance into a world of historic heritage with a distinct Dutch flavor followed, not mentioned in the tourist brochures. Could I replicate this experience in the Netherlands by setting out an itinerary along the family names mentioned in the early documents in New Netherlands? This particular key opened a door to the iconic world of rectangular plots cultivated a thousand year ago. The trail led to the first stone farms laid out in ribbons along canals and dikes, as they started to be built around the turn of the 15th to the 16th century. The old villages mostly on higher grounds, on cross roads, the oldest churches. As a sideline in a bit of fieldwork around the émigré villages, family names literally fell into place like Koeymans and van de Water in Schoonrewoerd or Cool in Vianen, or ten Eyck in Huinen. Some place names also fell into place, like Bern or Kortgericht, not Swiss, not Belgian, but Dutch situated in the Netherlands plain. The plain part of a centuries old network, as landscaped in the historic bishopric of Utrecht, where Gelder Valley polder villages like Huinen, Hell, Voorthuizen and Wekerom were part of.

[1] The term hoogheemraadschap was also traditionally the term used for water boards located along the Rijn and the Vecht.[2] Modern usage The term waterschap refers to the jurisdiction or to the administrative body. This also applies to hoogheemraadschap . In Dutch, the plural of waterschap' is waterschappen . The plural of hoogheemraadschap is hoogheemraadschappen . In present-day usage, the official term is waterschap . However, the term hoogheemraadschap is still used by some Dutch water control boards for historical reasons or when a number of waterschappen are grouped together into a larger regional body. Officially, there is no difference between a hoogheemraadschap and a waterschap . The Water Control Board Act ( Waterschapswet ), the Dutch statute that governs water control boards, refers only to the term waterschap .[3] A Dutch water control board that still uses hoogheemraadschap in its name (e.g.

Climate Campus – a Dutch Approach to Climate Resilience Renate POSTMA and Liesbeth RIJSDIJK, Netherlands Key words: Climate Adaptation, Governance, Citizen Science SUMMARY The complex challenge of climate adaptation in vulnerable deltas demands innovative collaboration to get it implemented at all levels by all actors. The Climate Campus Foundation connects (network) partners, ideas, projects and budgets on the basis of common goals and shared interests to strengthen innovation and implementation power. The development of new and ingenious solutions and talent makes climate adaptation more affordable and generates new economy. Even more important is connecting the professionals to local communities. They can be of significant importance to each other. Citizen science can play a key role. Collecting and use of data go hand in hand with involving communities in climate adaptation. In our IJssel-Vecht demonstration delta we are implementing citizen science in several projects. It is a start of a new approach to collaborate with local communities. A VULNERABLE DELTA 1.1 A history steeped in water At present, half of the world’s population lives in deltas, and in coastal or river areas, and this percentage is expected to rise to even seventy percent in 2050. All over the world, deltas are economic hubs, but they are also vulnerable. Given the predicted deteriorating changes in climate (rising sea levels, more extreme weather conditions, more drainage into rivers), the vulnerability of deltas is more relevant than ever before in history.
