SCRIPTURE READINGS—THE MORE YOU READ THE BIBLE, THE MORE YOU LOVE THE AUTHOR

THE EPISTLE

(For St. Luke) His voice has gone out into all the earth. The heavens declare the glory of God.

The Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Colossians. (4:5-11, 14-18)

Brethren, conduct yourselves wisely toward outsiders, making the most of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer everyone. Tychicus will tell you all about my affairs; he is a beloved brother and faithful minister and fellow servant in the Lord. I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are and that he may encourage your hearts, and with him Onesimus, the faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They will tell you of everything that has taken place. Aristarchus my fellow prisoner greets you, and Mark the cousin of Barnabas (concerning whom you have received instructions—if he comes to you, receive him), and Jesus who is called Justus. These are the only men of the circumcision among my fellow workers for the kingdom of God, and they have been a comfort to me. Luke the beloved physician and Demas greet you. Give my greetings to the brethren at Laodicea, and to Nympha and the church in her house. And when this letter has been read among you, have it read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and see that you read also the letter from Laodicea. And say to Archippus, “See that you fulfill the ministry which you have received in the Lord.” I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. Remember my fetters. Grace be with you. Amen.

THE GOSPEL

(For St. Luke) The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (10:16-21)

The Lord said, “He who hears you hears Me, and he who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.” The Seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Thy Name!” And Jesus said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you; but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” In that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the spirit and said, “I thank Thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that Thou hast hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to babes; yea, Father, for such was Thy gracious will.”

SAINTES ÉCRITURES - PLUS VOUS LISEZ LA BIBLE PLUS VOUS EN AIMEZ L’AUTEUR

L’ÉPÎTRE

La Lecture de l’Épître de Saint Paul aux Colossiens. (4:5-11, 14-18)

THE SYNAXARION

On October 18 in the Holy we commemorate the holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke. Verses Though near Emmaus I was kept from Thy vision, Yet now, saith Luke, I see Thee, O Christ, distinctly. On the eighteenth Luke reached the limit of his life.

He was born in Antioch. In his youth, he excelled in his studies of Greek philosophy, medicine and art. During the ministry of the Lord Jesus on earth, Luke came to Jerusalem, where he saw the Savior face to face, heard His saving teaching and was witness to His miraculous works. Coming to believe in the Lord, Luke was numbered among the Seventy Apostles, and was sent out to preach. With Cleopas, he saw the resurrected Lord on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24). After the descent of the Holy Spirit, Luke returned to Antioch and there became a fellow worker of the Apostle Paul and traveled to Rome with him, converting Jews and pagans to the Christian Faith. At the request of Christians, he wrote his Gospel in about the year 60. Following the martyrdom of the great Apostle Paul, Luke preached the Gospel throughout Italy, Dalmatia, Macedonia and other regions. He painted three of the Most-holy Theotokos—one of which is protected by the nuns of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Convent of Our Lady of Saydnaya in Syria. He also painted icons of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. Hence, Luke is considered to be the founder of Christian iconography. In old age, he visited Libya and Upper Egypt. From Egypt he returned to Greece, where he continued to preach and convert many with great zeal despite his old age. In addition to his Gospel, Luke wrote the Acts of the Apostles and dedicated both works to Theophilus, the governor of Achaia. Luke was 84 years old when the wicked idolaters tortured him for the sake of Christ and hanged him from an olive tree in the town of Thebes, in Boethia. The miracle-working relics of this wonderful saint were transported to Constantinople in the reign of Emperor Constantius, the son of Constantine.

On this day, we also commemorate Martyr Marinos the Elder at Anazarbos; Venerable Theodore, Simeon and Euphrosyne, founders of the Monastery of the Great Cave in the Peloponnesus; New-martyrs Gabriel and Kyrmidoles of Egypt; and Venerable Peter of Cetinje (TSEH-tee-nee-eh). By their holy intercessions, O Christ God, have mercy upon us. Amen.

ORTHOFLASH - ST.GEORGE MONTR É AL YOUTH MINISTRY SEMANTRON The SEMANTRON (from Ancient Greek sḗmantron, “a seal, signet”) is a percussion instrument used chiefly in Eastern Orthodox monasteries to summon the brethren to prayer or to lead processions. It is usually hung near the entrance of the sobor (church building [temple] of a monastery). In the traditional monastic ritual, before each service and every midnight for night offices (Midnight Office and Matins) the SEMANTRON is sounded. It is usually suspended by chains from a peg in the proaulion (porch of the sobor) or perhaps outside the refectory (dining room) door, or on a tree in the courtyard. Of Levantine and Egyptian origin, its use flourished on Mount Athos before spreading to Eastern Europe. It predates and substitutes for bells being used to call worshippers to prayer. Sometimes a SEMANTRON may be in use because the monastery cannot afford a bell. While continuing in daily use at monasteries, SEMANTRA have also played a part in Orthodox history. Their origin has been traced to at least the beginning of the 6th century, when the SEMANTRON had replaced the trumpet as the agent of convocation in the monasteries of Palestine and Egypt, including Saint Catherine’s in the Sinai. Larger and smaller SEMANTRA have been used, the smaller being sounded first, followed by the larger, then by those of iron. It is said that the congregations were summoned by three SEMANTRA in monasteries, and only by one large one in parish churches. Sometimes Orthodox churches and monasteries will combine the use of bells with the striking of a wooden or metal SEMANTRON, with the latter being sounded first, then the bells being rung later. The quieter and simpler sound of the SEMANTRON is understood to symbolize the Old Testament prophets, for it is the symbol only of a coming event, whereas the ringing of the bells symbolizes the annunciation of the Gospel throughout the world.

The of Saint Luke writing the first icon of the Theotokos.

On October 18th is celebrated the evangelist Saint Luke. This year is falls on a Sunday. An icon has been written in the Périchorèse In Chora icon studio at Saint George after our dear father Jean El-Murr, of Eternal Memory, visited the studio one day, before he was hospitalised, and asked : “Why isn’t there an icon of Saint Luke, patron saint of iconographers, in your studio?” In his smiling eyes we saw it was a suggestion more than a question and our answer was: “There will be one father, we will start working on it right away!” Today this promise is accomplished, the icon is completed and will soon be hung on the studio wall, after it has sojourned on the altar in the church.

It represents Saint Luke the evangelist, born in Antioch in a family of Greek culture, he was a physician and an artist. Saint Luke was a follower of Saint Paul. The third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles are attributed to Saint Luke.

This icon depicts Saint Luke painting an icon inspired and guided by an angel.

The icon is different from the model in front of his eyes. This reminds us that an icon is not a realistic portrait but rather speaks of the spriritual reality.
