Editio – translatio – retroversion – commentarii (Daniel Galadza) ...................................................................... 142 Briefly Noted ............................................................................ 147 Contributors ............................................................................. 161 The Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute of Eastern Christian Studies Academic Programs, Resources, Books v Logos: A Journal of Eastern Christian Studies Vol. 53 (2012) Nos. 1–2, pp. 1–11 Another Miracle from Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky When the Peter and Doris Kule Chair of Eastern Christian Theology and Spirituality was being inaugurated in 1994, the distinguished Ukrainian Catholic priest-canonist Victor Pospi- shil wrote in a letter of greeting that he thought the coming into being of the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute of Eastern Christian Studies was enough of a miracle as to estab- lish the sanctity of its namesake. Of course, most members of the Ukrainian Catholic Church consider the generation-long survival in the underground of this Church and its resurrection in 1989–90 with five million members to be the chief miracle attributable to the venerable giant of St. George’s Hill. But Rome’s Congregation for the Saints usually looks for miracles of a more medical nature – e.g., well-documented healings that defy scientific explanation, with x-rays or something of the like. Metropolitan Andrey was undoubtedly interested in physi- cal healing. He was the founder of a clinic in L’viv that was dedicated to the care of people of all backgrounds. And there is now a canonically verified miracle of physical healing attri- buted to the intercession of Metropolitan Andrey (more on that later). Nevertheless, it seems that he rather enjoys being in- volved in other rather miraculous phenomena, like bringing people together in mysterious ways to defy all the odds. It is in this context that I wish to report an extraordinary set of events that took place in Ottawa towards the end of April 2012. With the assistance of the Ukrainian-Jewish Encounter, an organization under the leadership of Canadian businessman and philanthropist Mr. James Temerty among others, the All- Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations (UCCRO) decided to pay a visit to Canada and the United States. I will limit myself to the events in Canada, although the 2 Andriy Chirovsky council also had a successful visit to Washington, DC (April 25–27) and New York (April 27–29).1 The council is a won- derful example of diverse groups working harmoniously together. It includes various Christian confessions: the Ukrai- nian Orthodox Church (Kyivan Patriarchate), the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate), the Ukrainian Auto- cephalous Orthodox Church, the Ukrainian Greco-Catholic Church, the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine, various evan- gelical, Pentecostal and Adventist denominations, and Jews and Muslims. This in itself is extremely important. Neither Canada nor the United States have an analogous body that would bring together the national representatives of Christia- nity, Judaism, and Islam to work together on various issues affecting society. For a fledgling democracy like Ukraine’s to demonstrate such interfaith cooperation is quite simply wonderful. The council represents 95% of believers in Ukraine; and believers constitute about three-quarters of the population. Thus, the council is (at least potentially) the most broad-based non- governmental organization in Ukraine’s civil society and could, if it proceeds carefully

Matthias Pavlik was born in 1879 in the Moravian town of Hrubavrbka in what would later become the Czech Republic. He was born into a Roman Catholic family, completed the Roman Catholic seminary in Olomouc and was ordained a priest. With the end of World War I and the formation of the new nation of Czechoslovakia from the ruins of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the laws requiring observance of the Catholic religion were loosened. Father Matthias, along with thousands of others left the Catholic Church with many seeking a home in the Orthodox Church, which in that region was then under the protection of the Orthodox Church of Serbia.

    The Impact of Covid-19 on Orthodox Groups and Believers in Russia Anastasia V. Mitrofanova Abstract This chapter intends to discover how Orthodox groups and believers of different ideological orientations in Russia reacted to the 2020 world health crisis. Its fo- cus lies on the groups and individual believers from the field of Russian Ortho- doxy who could be labelled as ‘fundamentalists’. Therefore, an analysis of the offi- cial ecclesiastical reaction to the pandemic will be provided, that underlines how some contradictory messages from above caused significant numbers of believers to sympathize with the so called “corona-dissidents” within the Church. Under the topic ‘dissidents’, various other groups apart from the fundamentalists such as the moderate traditionalists, liberals, or individuals who usually follow the mainstream ecclesiastical opinion, can be subsumed. Furthermore, it could be observed that fundamentalists mostly discuss themes that might be common for all “dissidents”, although they are more open towards their criticism in view of the mainstream reactions. They stick to the assumption that both mundane and ecclesiastical leaders have discredited themselves and need to be replaced.     SINGING WOMEN’S WORDS AS SACRAMENTAL MIMESIS 1. Introduction Ironically, two phenomena that were basic to Christian experience, even taken for granted, are neglected in modern scholarship. The first concerns what Christians, from Clement of Alexandria through Gertrude of Helfta and long after, understood themselves to be doing when they participated in the liturgy and sacraments. «Sacramental mimesis» proves to be a fitting term to describe the liturgical imita- tion that was described and experienced by Christians as bringing them into likeness with Christ and the saints, and examining such sacramental mimesis enlarges the modern understanding of the patristic, medieval and Byzantine Church. The second phenomenon is the Christian belief in the spiritual equality of the sexes, a belief evident in the Bible, in patristic and medieval sermons and exegesis, and in the decoration of churches. Complementing this evidence are the liturgical prayers and hymns, both Eastern and Western, that are expressed in the words of women of the Bible. Women’s words prove to be instrumental in the common Christian experience of sacramen- tal mimesis. This is dynamic evidence, not just of what the congrega- tion heard in sermons and saw on the church walls, but of what the congregation actively affirmed. For just as all Christians, male and female, cleric and lay, prayed and sang in the words of men, so too every Christian in virtually every liturgy took part by praying and singing women’s words. In Judaeo-Christian tradition one prays in the words of the right- eous who have gone before1. This dynamic use of holy speech is part 1.
