Match background

FC Bayern München welcome FC Barcelona to Bavaria for the second leg of their quarter-final knowing they will have to make UEFA Champions League history if they are to fully capitalise on home advantage and claim their first semi-final place since 2001 – the year of their last European triumph. • No team has ever overturned a four-goal first-leg deficit in the competition, yet that is what Bayern must do following their heavy defeat in Barcelona, a result which emphatically ended their unbeaten record in this season's competition. • Deprived of Lucio, Daniel Van Buyten and Philipp Lahm, Bayern's makeshift defence was picked apart twice in the first 12 minutes as goals from Lionel Messi and Samuel Eto'o put Barça in command. Further strikes from Messi again (38) and Thierry Henry (43) deepened Bayern's misery as the Munich club slipped to a loss that equalled their biggest margin of defeat in UEFA club competition. • The biggest first-leg deficit a side has overturned in the UEFA Champions League era was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals when they fought back from a 4-1 defeat at AC Milan to win 4-0 at home. • Bayern have won seven of the 17 ties in UEFA club competition in which they have had to overturn a first-leg deficit at home, although in each previous instance they returned to Munich trailing by only a single goal. Of the ten ties that ended in aggregate defeat, the German side enjoyed the consolation of a second-leg victory seven times. • Barcelona, meanwhile, have lost only three of 36 two-legged contests in UEFA club competition when they won the first match at home. Curiously, all three defeats came against English clubs: against Chelsea FC in the 2004/05 first knockout round (2-1, 2-4); Manchester United FC in the 1983/84 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup quarter-finals (2-0, 0-3); and Aston Villa FC in the 1982 UEFA Super Cup final (1-0, 0-3). • Beaten at this stage of the competition in 2002, 2005 and 2007, Bayern can at least take heart from an excellent home record against Spanish clubs down the years, not to mention some fine results at the Fußball Arena München in this season, with three wins and a draw – and 14 goals scored. • Jürgen Klinsmann's side put seven past Sporting Clube de Portugal in their last UEFA Champions League fixture here yet of all the teams in the tournament, Barcelona are the least likely to be intimidated by a rival's scoring prowess. • The Spanish club are the highest-scoring team on their travels with 13 from four matches and boast a fine recent away record in the UEFA Champions League, having won eight and drawn three of their last 12 games on the road.

• Barcelona are unbeaten away from home in this season's competition, with group-stage victories at FC Shakhtar Donetsk (2-1), FC Basel 1893 (5-0) and Sporting (5-2) preceding a 1-1 draw at in the last 16. • Bayern began their home campaign in this season's competition with a 1-1 draw against Lyon prior to a pair of 3-0 victories against ACF Fiorentina and FC Steaua Bucureşti and that Sporting victory. • The German champions reached the quarter-finals in emphatic fashion after crushing Sporting 12-1 on aggregate (5-0 away, 7-1 at home). Prior to that they had finished first in Group F with a record of W4 D2 L0. • Josep Guardiola's Barcelona advanced with a 6-3 aggregate victory against Lyon in the first knockout round (1-1 away, 5-2 home). Barcelona had previously topped Group C with a record of W4 D1 L1. • Coaches Klinsmann and Guardiola were both in action when Barcelona and Bayern met for the first time in the semi-finals of the 1995/96 UEFA Cup. The teams drew 2-2 in Munich before Bayern – with Klinsmann again present but Guardiola absent – won through to the final with a 2-1 success at the Camp Nou. Carlos Busquets, father of Barcelona midfielder Sérgio, featured in goal for the Azulgrana in both legs. • The clubs' next encounters came in the 1998/99 UEFA Champions League group stage when Bayern recorded home and away successes, 1-0 in Germany and 2-1 in Spain. At the Camp Nou, Bayern came from a goal behind to win through second-half strikes from Alexander Zickler and Hasan Salihamidžić. • Guardiola and Klinsmann were also on opposing sides as players when Barcelona beat the German's AS Monaco FC side both at home (2-0) and away (1-0) in the group stage of the 1993/94 UEFA Champions League. • Later that same season they came face to face in the first round of the 1994 FIFA World Cup where Klinsmann's equalising goal earned Germany a 1-1 draw against Guardiola's Spain in Chicago. • Bayern have a formidable home record against Spanish clubs of W11 D4 L1. That solitary defeat was a 2-3 loss to RC Deportivo La Coruña in September 2002. • The German club have twice scored four goals at home to Spanish opposition although on each occasion – against Real CF in the 1987 European Champion Clubs' Cup semi-finals and against the same opponents in the 1999/00 UEFA Champions League second group stage – the visitors also got on the scoresheet, both matches finishing 4-1. • Counting their 2001 UEFA Champions League final draw with Valencia CF as a victory, Bayern's overall record against Spanish clubs is: W17 D9 L10. • Bayern defeated Valencia 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the 2001 final. It was their second European Cup triumph at the expense of opposition from Spain. In 1974 they overcame Club Atlético de Madrid 4-0 in a replay after another 1-1 draw. • The champions lost their two previous European Cup quarter-finals against Spanish opposition, suffering defeats at the hands of Real Madrid in the 2001/02 (2-3 agg) and 1987/88 (3-4 agg) campaigns. • Bayern produced a dramatic comeback in their most recent two-legged meeting with a Spanish club. After a 1-1 first-leg draw in Munich in last season's UEFA Cup quarter-final against Getafe CF, they fought back in spectacular fashion in the return leg to earn a 3-3 draw – and, with it, an away goals victory. • After Franck Ribéry's 89th-minute equaliser had forced extra time at 1-1, the drama levels kept rising as the Spanish side went 3-1 in front in the additional period only for Luca Toni to score after 115 and 120 minutes to secure an improbable triumph. • Bayern have won just one of their last ten matches against Spanish sides, suffering six defeats. • Barcelona's overall record against German clubs is: W26 D9 L11. Their away record against German clubs is: W9 D8 L5. • Barcelona overcame opposition from the Bundesliga at this stage last season, recording 1-0 victories both at home and away against FC Schalke 04. • Barcelona lifted the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1979 after a 4-3 final victory against TSV Fortuna Düsseldorf. They have twice won the UEFA Super Cup, meanwhile, by beating German sides: overcoming Werder Bremen 3-2 on aggregate in 1992/93 and BV Borussia 3-1 in 1997/98.

• The Spanish club, semi-finalists last season, boast an impressive run of form against German opposition having won eleven and drawn one of their last 12 matches against sides from the Bundesliga. • This is Bayern's 21st European Cup quarter-final – more than any other side left in the competition and a total surpassed only by Real Madrid's 27. Bayern's record is P20 W12 L8. • Bayern's most recent home defeat in the UEFA Champions League came against AC Milan in the 2006/07 quarter-finals when a 2-0 reverse consigned them to a 4-2 aggregate loss. • Barcelona's record in European Cup quarter-finals is: P10 W8 L2. • Bayern midfielder Mark van Bommel was in the Barcelona side that won the UEFA Champions League in 2005/06. It was his sole season in Spain and he also tasted domestic championship glory, featuring 24 times in the Liga. • Barcelona forward Henry scored the only goal for former club Arsenal FC in a second-leg home win over Bayern in the 2004/05 first knockout round but it proved in a losing cause, following the Munich side's 3-1 first-leg success. • Another Barcelona player, Eidur Gudjohnsen, was in the Chelsea team that subsequently eliminated Bayern in the last eight that season. • The tie pits a number of international team-mates against each other: Daniel Alves v Lucio (Brazil), Henry and Eric Abidal v Ribéry (France); Messi and Gabriel Milito v Martín Demichelis (Argentina). • Barcelona's Andrés Iniesta, Xavi Hernández and Carles Puyol were in the Spain team that won the final of UEFA EURO 2008™ against a Germany team including Miroslav Klose, Lahm, Lukas Podolski and Bastian Schweinsteiger. • Bayern forward Ribéry scored for France in a 3-1 win against a Spain side that included Puyol and Xavi in the last 16 of the 2006 FIFA World Cup. • Bayern midfielder Tim Borowski failed to beat Barcelona in four attempts with former club Werder Bremen. He was in the Bremen side beaten home and away by Barça in the 2005/06 group stage and the following campaign things got only marginally better – Bremen were denied a home victory over Barcelona by a late Messi equaliser and then had their elimination confirmed by a 2-0 loss in Barcelona. Klose featured alongside Borowski in the two away defeats. • Bayern defender Lucio was in the Bayer 04 Leverkusen lineup that beat Barcelona 2-1 in Germany in the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League first group stage, but lost by the same score in Spain. • Bayern's record in penalty shoot-outs in UEFA club competition is: 5-4 v Valencia, 2000/01 UEFA Champions League final 9-8 v PAOK FC, 1983/84 UEFA Cup second round 4-3 v Åtvidabergs FF, 1973/74 European Cup first round • Barcelona's shoot-out record is: 5-4 v Lech Poznán, 1988/89 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup second round 0-2 v FC Steaua Bucureşti, 1985/86 European Cup final 5-4 v IFK Göteborg, 1985/86 European Cup semi-final 4-1 v RSC Anderlecht, 1978/79 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup second round 3-1 v Ipswich Town FC, 1977/78 UEFA Cup third round 5-4 v AZ Alkmaar, 1977/78 UEFA Cup second round • The winning team will meet the victors of the Chelsea-Liverpool FC quarter-final tie in a semi-final to be played on Tuesday 28 April and Wednesday 6 May, and will have home advantage for the first leg.

• Franck Ribéry has provided six assists, more than any other player. • Ribéry (31) and Luca Toni (29) are the most fouled players still involved in the competition. • Bayern have won only 44 corners, the lowest total of the teams in the quarter-finals. Disciplinary information • Tim Borowski, Martín Demichelis and Mark van Bommel will incur a ban with their next bookings. Latest domestic information • Saturday 11 April: FC Bayern München 4-0 Eintracht Frankfurt (Ribéry 3, Toni 17, Lucio 36, Schweinsteiger 48) Bayern bounced back from their Camp Nou disappointment with a comprehensive home performance, Ribéry's early long-range effort settling any nerves for a side that had suffered four-goal defeats in their last two outings. The French international turned provider as his lofted free-kick was volleyed in by Toni before Lucio, back from a thigh injury, made it 3-0 with a header from Schweinsteiger's corner. Schweinsteiger made it four from point-blank range. • "This was a classy reaction to the display in Barcelona," said Jürgen Klinsmann. "What happened there really smarts and we wanted to make amends with our supporters. After an hour everything was done and dusted and it became a wonderful spring day. We now have big ambitions for Tuesday and want to bid farewell to the Champions League with our credibility restored." • Klinsmann made three changes to the side that started in Barcelona, with fit-again Lucio replacing Breno in central defence and Christian Lell preferred to Massimo Oddo at right-back, though Lell went off with a minor knock at half-time. Hamit Altıntop made way for José Ernesto Sosa while Hans Jörg Butt was retained in goal so Michael Rensing missed his first Bundesliga game of the season. Daniel Van Buyten was again absent due to family reasons. • It was Bayern's fourth successive victory at the Fußball Arena München, Klinsmann's team scoring 17 in the process and conceding two. • Bayern's 4-0 defeat in Barcelona was the third time in four away games they had conceded four goals. They had lost 5-1 at VfL Wolfsburg in their previous outing and 4-2 against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the German Cup quarter-finals on 4 March. • The only other time Bayern suffered back-to-back losses this season they won 5-0 in their next outing, at Sporting Clube de Portugal. • Bayern have chalked up four goals in five of their 15 matches since the turn of the year: against VfB Stuttgart (5-1, German Cup), Hannover 96 (5-1, Bundesliga), Sporting (5-0 and 7-1) and now Eintracht. • Of the 36 league goals Bayern have conceded this term, 20 have come at home. The Bavarian side shipped only 21 goals in the whole of last season, eight at home. • Bayern have lost six times in the Bundesliga this season; four defeats more than they suffered in the whole of last term when they regained the title. • Bayern have scored in every match at the Fußball Arena München in all competitions this season. Injury news • Tim Borowski – out 4 March to 4 April (thigh) • Luca Toni – out 14-25 February and 25 February to 4 April (achilles/gastroenteritis) • Hamit Altıntop – out 7 March to 8 April (torn right calf) • Massimo Oddo – out 7 March to 8 April (calf) • Lucio – out 4-11 April (thigh) • Miroslav Klose – out since 14 March (right ankle) • Philipp Lahm – out since 4 April (calf) • Klose has been ruled out until late April at the earliest after undergoing ankle surgery on 16 March, Klinsmann describing the news as a "severe blow". Miscellaneous • On 19 March Bayern agreed a new 12-month contract with Van Bommel, the club captain committing until June 2010, while Demichelis extended his deal by two seasons until 2012.

Barcelona UEFA milestones • Thierry Henry's goal at home to Bayern was his 50th in the UEFA Champions League. • Samuel Eto'o's strike on Matchday 9 was Barcelona's 250th in the UEFA Champions League, group stage to final. UEFA Champions League statistics • Lionel Messi's double in the first leg with Bayern took his total for the season to eight goals, making him the competition's top scorer. • Barcelona have scored more goals (28) and had more shots on target (75) than any other side in the quarter-finals. Barça have been caught offside only 15 times and committed just 105 fouls, fewer than any other side in the last eight, while no side left in the competition has suffered more fouls than their total of 165. Disciplinary information • Rafael Márquez misses the game in Munich after picking up a yellow card in the first leg while coach Josep Guardiola has been handed a one-match touchline ban following his dismissal in the first leg. Sergio Busquets will also incur a suspension with his next booking. Latest domestic information • Saturday 11 April: FC Barcelona 2-0 RC Recreativo de Huelva (Iniesta 1, Morris og 68) Barcelona secured a seventh successive victory in all competitions to maintain their healthy cushion at the top of the Liga. Guardiola made five changes to the side that had started the Bayern victory but it was business as usual as two of those retained combined to break the deadlock inside 45 seconds, Andrés Iniesta tapping in Henry's deflected centre. The Spain international then played a key role in the second as his cross was put through his own net by Recreativo defender Nasief Morris. • "Winning proved a bit tricky as we lacked rhythm and that final step forward, but it's not always easy," said Guardiola. "The atmosphere [inside the stadium] was a bit subdued but because of that I give a lot of value to this type of game; they can be more testing than any other. We won on an ugly evening without really shining." • Barcelona and Victor Valdés have not conceded in five games, their longest sequence of clean sheets in this campaign. The Catalan side have the best defensive record in the Liga, conceding only 24 goals all season. • Valdés has also surpassed his record for going unbreached in the Liga; it is 451 minutes since Sergio Agüero's 89th-minute goal in a 4-3 defeat by Club Atlético de Madrid on 1 March. Miguel Reina, father of Liverpool FC keeper Pepe, holds Barcelona's Spanish top-flight record of 824 minutes set in the 1972/73 season. • Barcelona ended a run of five games without a win in all competitions on 7 March when they beat Athletic Club Bilbao, and have since won seven in a row. • The 6-0 victory against Málaga CF on 22 March took Barcelona to 69 points, two more than they mustered in the whole of last season with ten games still to play. • Barcelona have lost five times in 49 matches in all competitions this season, always by a solitary goal. The last time they lost by a four-goal margin came with a 4-0 loss at Getafe CF on 10 May 2007 in the second leg of a Copa del Rey semi-final tie. The Catalan giants had won 5-2 at the Camp Nou. • Eto'o has scored five goals in six games for the Catalan club. He has struck 26 times in the Liga this season and is just one shy of his best haul in 12 campaigns in Spain, set in his second term at the Camp Nou in 2005/06, the last time Barcelona won the title. • Eto'o has 125 goals for the club in all competitions, and is fourth on Barcelona's all-time top-scorers' list. Rivaldo (130) is next in his sights, then Ladislao Kubala (196) and César Rodríguez (235). • Henry's goal at home to Bayern took his tally to 41 in all competitions for Barcelona; the subsequent Recreativo fixture was his 82nd game for the club.

Working under the likes of Arsène Wenger and Giovanni Trapattoni during a club career which took in spells at VfB Stuttgart, FC Internazionale Milano, AS Monaco FC, Tottenham Hotspur FC and FC Bayern München, Klinsmann has worked with plenty of great coaches. Scoring well over 200 league goals, Klinsmann was an exceptional talent, even though he was to end his club career with only two major trophies – the 1990/91 UEFA Cup won with Inter and the 1995/96 edition won at Bayern. Initially it seemed that Klinsmann had turned his back on football after hanging up his boots in 1998, moving to the United States to work in sports marketing. However, he made several appearances for Orange County Blue Star in California under the pseudonym Jay Goppingen – a reference to his home town – in 2003 to keep his eye in, before accepting the job of Germany coach in July 2004. Hired to lead the national team as hosts at the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals in tandem with his assistant and eventual successor Joachim Löw, Klinsmann's young side shone on the way to taking bronze. Stepping down despite clamour for him to stay on, Klinsmann said he yearned for normal family life but he was eventually tempted back to football by his old side, Bayern, replacing in July 2008.

FC Barcelona: Josep Guardiola Date of birth: 18 January 1971 Nationality: Spanish Playing career: FC Barcelona, Brescia Calcio (twice), AS Roma, Al-Ahly Club, Dorados de Sinaloa Coaching career: FC Barcelona B, FC Barcelona A playing legend at FC Barcelona, Josep Guardiola was given the task of returning the club to the top of the domestic and European scenes when he took over from previous coach Frank Rijkaard in the summer of 2008. After two trophyless terms at the Camp Nou, a gamble was taken by the Barça board who decided to promote the largely untried Guardiola from the club's youth team. 'Pep,' as he was affectionately referred to as a player, won a host of honours with the Azulgrana between the years of 1990 and 2001 including six Spanish Liga titles, one European Champion Clubs' Cup, a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and two Copa del Rey trophies. Having had an initial period at Brescia Calcio disrupted due to a four-month doping ban, Guardiola went on to play a handful of games for Fabio Capello's AS Roma before returning to Brescia. He subsequently finished his club career in Mexico with Dorados de Sinola in 2006 after a spell at Al-Ahli Club of Doha. A 1992 Olympic gold medallist in Barcelona with Spain, with whom he won 40 senior caps, Guardiola missed out on the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cup tournaments through injury. Given the opportunity to take up the reigns at Barcelona's B team in June 2007 with the objective of returning the team to the Segunda División B, the 37-year-old succeeded in style while relying on a style of play that placed an emphasis on wide attackers and pressing defenders. His youngsters went on to win 28 games while remaining unbeaten and he gained a promotion himself to become the 15th Catalan-born coach to take the helm of the Barcelona first team.

Referee

Name Nat. Date of birth UCL UEFA Roberto Rosetti ITA 18.09.1967 18 33 Since first tasting UEFA competition with the UEFA European Under-17 Championship finals back in April 2002, Roberto Rosetti has enjoyed a rapid rise to the very highest levels of football. That was underlined when he was one of the European referees chosen for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He was given four appointments in Germany, including the second-round meeting between Spain and France, and at 1.90m was the tallest official at the finals. The Turin-based hospital manager, who enjoys playing tennis in his spare time, has been a highly-regarded match official in Italy for some years and earned his FIFA international badge in 2002. One of his first major continental club appointments came when he took charge of the 2004 UEFA Intertoto Cup final between FC Schalke 04 and FC Slovan Liberec. Rosetti, who speaks English and French as well as his native Italian, worked at the 2003 FIFA U-20 World Cup and then, in summer 2005, had three games at the FIFA Confederations Cup, which served as an ideal warm-up for the World Cup the following year. He followed that with two UEFA Champions League matches in the 2005/06 campaign, along with three in the UEFA Cup. When relaxing away from sport, Rosetti enjoys reading and watching movies, and took charge of four UEFA Champions League matches in 2006/07, including Liverpool FC's 1-0 defeat of PSV Eindhoven in the quarter-final second leg. He ended the following club season by taking charge of the UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg between Chelsea FC and Liverpool and opened UEFA EURO 2008™, Rosetti opened the tournament by taking charge of the first match between co-hosts Switzerland and the Czech Republic. He also refereed the quarter-final between Turkey and Croatia and was then awarded the final, when Spain beat Germany 1-0.

UEFA information

MasterCard agreement Agreement has been reached with MasterCard, one of the world's leading payments system providers, to continue as an official partner of the UEFA Champions League for the new 2009-2012 cycle, and for the UEFA Super Cup in 2009, 2010 and 2011. UEFA said that the three-year deal will run until the end of the 2011/12 football season and will see MasterCard continue to leverage the sponsorship through their exclusive product category – payment systems. MasterCard joins Heineken, Sony and UniCredit as the fourth official partner for the 2009-2012 seasons. "We are very happy to be renewing our relationship with MasterCard, one of the world's premier global brands," said UEFA General Secretary David Taylor. UEFA's key values UEFA President Michel Platini has presented eleven key values – appropriately, the same number as a football team – that should serve as the basis for UEFA's future activities and dialogue, on behalf of European football, with the political, economic, social and sporting world. Mr Platini highlighted the eleven values in his address to representatives of UEFA's 53 national associations, delegates from the world football family and guests at the XXXIII Ordinary UEFA Congress in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 25 March. The values give priority to football and cover areas such as respect, good governance and autonomy, grassroots football and solidarity, sporting integrity and betting, financial fair play, the European sports model and sport's specificity. Solidarity increase UEFA and the European Club Association (ECA) have announced an increase in the solidarity percentage for the next, 2009-2012 UEFA Champions League cycle, starting with the 2009/10 season. The solidarity percentage for clubs not taking part in the UEFA Champions League, which is earmarked for youth training programmes, will increase from the current 5 per cent to 6.5 per cent. Based on present revenue projections, this means that in season 2009/10, approximately €55m would be made available for redistribution to these clubs via the national associations and professional leagues – which is approximately €23m more than in the last season of the previous cycle. Including the additional allocations also made available to clubs from leagues with no participants in the UEFA Champions League, the solidarity pot will amount to approximately €67m. Additionally, the solidarity amounts paid to clubs eliminated in the qualifying stages of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League will also increase. Financial control panel UEFA's Executive Committee has approved the creation of a Club Financial Control Panel in what is a first concrete measure to improve financial fair play in the UEFA club competitions. The decision, taken at the committee's most recent meeting in Copenhagen, follows recommendations by the UEFA Club Licensing Committee and the Professional Football Strategy Council. At UEFA level, the body will comprise financial and legal experts and will ensure that the club licensing system is applied correctly. It will be composed of a chairman and up to eight members appointed by the UEFA Executive Committee. "The main task of the panel will be to conduct financial audits on clubs in order to ensure licences were correctly awarded and it may further conduct spot checks, and/or investigations, to ensure that the integrity rules are observed by the clubs," said UEFA. "This is the first step to have concrete measures to promote what we call financial fair play," UEFA General Secretary David Taylor told uefa.com. "We already have a club licensing system across Europe – a system based on national licensing by national associations or leagues. We feel that it is important to have something at European level, and [the panel] will look specifically at the finances of clubs and how they are structured. As from next season, this panel will be doing continuous monitoring." Rome handover Since the 1997 UEFA Champions League final in Munich, it has become an established tradition for the previous season's champions to formally return the UEFA Champions League trophy to UEFA at a special ceremony – and for the cup then to be handed to the host city to be displayed until the final. The cup handover for this season's final at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on 27 May will take place at the Sala Protomoteca, Campidoglio, on 21 April from 12.30CET. This is a particular date for the city of Rome, being the Natale di Roma – the city's traditional birthday. uefa.com success March has been a record month for uefa.com thanks to a combination of spectacular matches played in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup, and more than 200 million page views and 15.5 million visitors accessing UEFA's official website. This constitutes an increase of 44 per cent in page views and 112 per cent in visitors compared with the same month last year. Since its relaunch in September 2001, uefa.com has registered an overall increase of over 800 per cent in visitors.

Competition facts

UEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know? • Teams have recovered from a first-leg deficit to go through to the next stage on 21 occasions, although only once – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finals – has a side gone through after losing the first leg at home. The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals when they fought back from a 4-1 defeat at AC Milan to win 4-0 at home. • Sixteen ties have been decided on the , including five where the triumphant team lost the first leg. • FC Bayern München hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugal in this season's first knockout round, eventually going through 12-1 after a 7-1 home victory in the second leg. • Ten ties have now gone to penalties, including the game between Arsenal FC and AS Roma in the 2008/09 first knockout round. Five of these were finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2008. The first two-legged tie decided on spot-kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against Olympique Lyonnais on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw. • In all, 17 ties have required extra time. So far seven ties have been decided by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, two first knockout round encounters and last season's semi-final between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC. • Real Madrid CF extended their record for knockout stage qualification in successive seasons. The 2008/09 campaign is the twelfth straight season since 1997/98 that they made it beyond the group stage, keeping them ahead of Manchester United FC, who appeared nine times in a row between 1996/97 and 2004/05. Overall Madrid have now played in the knockout stage 13 times, one more than United and two more than Bayern. • The 2008/09 first knockout round encounter between Bayern and Sporting featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any previous UEFA Champions League knockout tie, Bayern prevailing 12-1. Lyon's 10-2 win against Werder Bremen at the same stage of the competition in 2004/05 was the previous highest total. • There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Nine have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Manchester United's narrow victory against FC Barcelona in the 2007/08 semi-finals. • Clarence Seedorf is the only player to win the European Champion Clubs' Cup with three clubs (AFC Ajax 1995, Madrid 1998, Milan 2003, 2007). Liverpool's Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981) is the only coach to win three times. • Ottmar Hitzfeld (BV Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001) and Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983) are the only coaches to win the trophy with two clubs. • Only five capital cities have been home to teams that have won the European Cup: Madrid (Real Madrid), (FK Crvena Zvezda), Bucharest (FC Steaua Bucureşti), Amsterdam (Ajax) and Lisbon (SL Benfica). • Rome was awarded the 2009 UEFA Champions League final after a decision by the UEFA Executive Committee at its meeting in Ljubljana, Slovenia in October 2006. The Stadio Olimpico, home of AS Roma and S.S. Lazio, previously held European Cup finals in 1977, 1984 and 1996 – Liverpool winning the first two games and Juventus the last – and was also the venue for the 1990 FIFA World Cup final between West Germany and Argentina. Other major events at the stadium include the 1987 IAAF World Championships in athletics and the 1960 Olympic Games, for which it was constructed in 1953. UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta became the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League in 2007/08 when he featured against Olympiacos CFP on Matchday 1 aged 43 years and 168 days. The record was previously held by Alessandro Costacurta, the AC Milan defender who played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07 aged 40 years and 211 days. Ballotta was 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid on Matchday 6. • Laurent Blanc is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 36 years and 339 days, having found the net for Manchester United in their 3-2 defeat of Olympiacos on 23 October 2002. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was then sent off in the 37th minute.

Team facts

FC Bayern München UEFA club competition milestones • Four-time European champions, Bayern have reached seven European Champion Clubs' Cup finals and, together with AFC Ajax, dominated the competition during the 1970s by claiming three successive trophies, beating Club Atlético de Madrid (1973/74), Leeds United AFC (1974/75) and AS Saint-Etienne (1975/76). UEFA Cup Winners' Cup victors in 1966/67, Bayern completed the European club football hat-trick by seeing off FC Girondins de Bordeaux in the 1995/96 UEFA Cup final. UEFA Champions League milestones • Two years after the heartbreak of conceding two last-gasp goals to lose the final against Manchester United FC, Bayern claimed their fourth European Cup – and their only one since the onset of the UEFA Champions League – in 2000/01 when they overcame Valencia CF on penalties. Last season was the first edition Bayern had not taken part in since 1996/97. UEFA club competition honours • European Champion Clubs' Cup: 1973/74, 1974/75, 1975/76, 2000/01 • UEFA Cup: 1995/96 • UEFA Cup Winners' Cup: 1966/67 • European/South American Cup: 1976, 2001 Ten-year record 2007/08: UEFA Cup – semi-finals 2006/07: UEFA Champions League – quarter-finals 2005/06: UEFA Champions League – first knockout round 2004/05: UEFA Champions League – quarter-finals 2003/04: UEFA Champions League – first knockout round 2002/03: UEFA Champions League – first group stage 2001/02: UEFA Champions League – quarter-finals 2000/01: UEFA Champions League – winners 1999/00: UEFA Champions League – semi-finals 1998/99: UEFA Champions League – runners-up 2007/08 season Domestic record: After coming fourth the previous season, Bayern romped to the Bundesliga title finishing ten points clear of the chasing pack and losing just two games throughout the campaign. Coach Ottmar Hitzfeld also led his side to the German Cup final where they defeated BV Borussia Dortmund 2-1 after extra time to secure the domestic double. European record: Bayern topped UEFA Cup Group F with eight points following a first-round win against CF Os Belenenses. The Round of 32 brought a comprehensive defeat of Aberdeen FC and they also swept aside RSC Anderlecht. However, they needed two late strikes for a dramatic away goals quarter-final victory over Getafe CF and then met FC Zenit St. Petersburg in the last four. After a 1-1 draw at home, Bayern lost 4-0 in Russia to go out to the eventual champions. FC Barcelona UEFA club competition milestones • In total, Barcelona have appeared in five European Champion Clubs' Cup finals, winning the 1991/92 competition against UC Sampdoria thanks to a 112th-minute Ronald Koeman free-kick before their triumph in the 2005/06 campaign. • They lost on penalties to FC Steaua Bucureşti in the 1985/86 season, 3-2 to SL Benfica in 1960/61 and 4-0 to AC Milan in 1993/94. Four-time UEFA Cup Winners' Cup winners, they lost in the 1968/69 and 1990/91 finals. UEFA Champions League milestones • With Barcelona now in their 13th campaign, the highlight remains the 2-1 win against Arsenal FC in Paris that made them European champions in 2006. Only Manchester United FC and FC Porto (14) have taken part on more occasions. UEFA club competition honours • European Champion Clubs' Cup: 1991/92, 2005/06 • UEFA Cup Winners' Cup: 1978/79, 1981/82, 1988/89, 1996/97 • UEFA Super Cup: 1992, 1997 Ten-year record 2007/08: UEFA Champions League – semi-finals 2006/07: UEFA Champions League – first knockout round 2005/06: UEFA Champions League – winners 2004/05: UEFA Champions League – first knockout round 2003/04: UEFA Cup – fourth round 2002/03: UEFA Champions League – quarter-finals 2001/02: UEFA Champions League – semi-finals 2000/01: UEFA Cup – semi-finals (having transferred from UEFA Champions League group stage) 1999/00: UEFA Champions League – semi-finals 1998/99: UEFA Champions League – group stage 2007/08 season Domestic record: Barça finished third in Spain last term, ten points behind runners-up Villarreal CF with champions Real Madrid CF a further eight ahead. It was a far cry from the season before where the Catalan side had only lost the title by virtue of a poorer head to head against their rivals from the capital. Barcelona reached the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey before being knocked out by eventual winners Valencia CF 4-3 on aggregate. European record: UEFA Champions League Group E was a happy hunting ground for Barcelona last season and they went through undefeated, recording four victories and two draws to finish top. They faced Celtic FC in the first knockout round, a 3-2 first-leg win in Glasgow setting up an aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with FC Schalke 04. A pair of 1-0 triumphs earned a last-four spot but there they met Manchester United FC who won through 1-0 overall. United went on to become European champions.
