It was against LOSC Lille on 19 September that FC BATE Borisov finally recorded their first UEFA Champions League group stage win at the 13th attempt and they will hope to make it a double on matchday five. • In Group F's first round of matches, BATE scored three first-half goals at the Grand Stade Lille Métropole through Aleksandr Volodko (6), (20) and Edgar Olekhnovich (43), with Aurélien Chedjou's second-half header scant consolation for LOSC. • That first victory was swiftly followed by a second for BATE as they beat FC Bayern München by the same 3-1 scoreline at home, before Valencia CF brought them back to earth with a 3-0 away success in Minsk. The return ended 4-2 to the Spanish side to leave BATE third in the section on six points, three behind Bayern and Valencia. • LOSC lost 2-0 at Valencia on matchday two and then suffered a third reverse when Bayern won 1-0 in northern France. The return fixture with the German team two weeks later finished in LOSC's heaviest European defeat as they were overwhelmed 6-1, ending their UEFA Champions League aspirations for the season; they must now win by a greater margin than 3-1 at BATE to have any hope of overtaking their opponents for third place. Previous meetings • The matchday one encounter was the sides' first ever meeting while previous experience of opposition from the other team's country is also scarce. • BATE faced Paris Saint-Germain FC in the 2010/11 UEFA Cup round of 32 and went out on away goals. The games ended 2-2 at the Dinamo Stadion, Renan Bressan scoring BATE's first goal, and 0-0 in Paris. • LOSC played FC Dinamo Minsk in the 2004 UEFA Intertoto Cup third round, winning 2-1 at home before a 2-2 away draw. Match background • BATE lifted a sixth straight Belarusian title in 2011 – and clinched a seventh on 11 November – to earn a chance of claiming their third appearance in the UEFA Champions League group stage. They overcame FK Vardar 3-2 at home and on aggregate in the second qualifying round, and then relied on an own goal in a 1-1 draw with Debreceni VSC in before a 2-0 away success. • A 2-0 home win against Hapoel Kiryat Shmona FC put BATE in control of their play-off tie, before a 1-1 draw in Israel sent 's side through 3-1 on aggregate. • Remaining unbeaten at home in UEFA Champions League qualifying maintained a trend for BATE, who did the same in 2011/12 (two wins, one draw) and 2008/09 (one win, two draws), prior to their two previous group stage appearances. • However, beyond the qualifying rounds it is a different story: including this season, their two preceding group stage campaigns and their UEFA Europa League participations of 2010/11 and 2009/10, BATE's home record is W4 D2 L8. • At home in last term's UEFA Champions League group stage the Belarusian outfit lost 5-0 to FC Barcelona and 1-0 against FC Viktoria Plzeň, and drew 1-1 with AC Milan. • LOSC overcame FC København in the play-offs to make the group stage for the fifth time, losing 1-0 in Denmark before a 2-0 extra-time triumph in the return, the first European match at their new home. • Les Dogues drew 1-1 at AŞ in this competition last season, lost 2-1 at FC Internazionale Milano and won 2-0 at PFC CSKA Moskva. Team ties • Rio Mavuba was in the France team that beat Belarus 3-1 in a FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Stade de France on 11 September. Mickaël Landreau was an unused substitute, with Artem Radkov, Bressan, Denis Polyakov and Rodionov all starting for the visitors. Aleksandr Gutor remained on the bench.

FC BATE Borisov: Viktor Goncharenko Date of birth: 10 June 1977 Nationality: Belarusian Playing career: FC RUOR Minsk, FC BATE Borisov Coaching career: FC BATE Borisov • His career as a BATE defender ended at 25 because of ruptured left knee ligaments, Goncharenko immediately switched to coaching, taking over the club's reserves and guiding them to second-placed finishes in 2005 and 2006 before graduating to become assistant to head coach Igor Kriushenko. • In 2007 he replaced Kriushenko on a temporary basis when the latter developed health problems and guided BATE to five wins in his six matches in charge. • When Kriushenko departed for FC Dinamo Minsk that November Goncharenko got his big break with the newly-crowned champions; won the first of four successive league titles with BATE in 2008, adding a domestic double in 2010, with the coach – who lifted the 1999 and 2002 titles as a player – also feted as his nation's coach of the year in all three seasons. • His first year in charge also brought Goncharenko a Belarusian first in taking BATE to the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League group stage; his side were eliminated despite two draws against Juventus, but at 31, Goncharenko became the group stage's youngest ever coach. • Reached the UEFA Europa League group stage in the following two campaigns, going on to the round of 32 in 2010/11. Added another league title in 2011 and took BATE into the UEFA Champions League group stage again, achieving another notable draw against AC Milan. BATE returned to the group stage for the third time in five seasons in 2012/13.

LOSC Lille: Rudi Garcia Date of birth: 20 February 1964 Nationality: French Playing career: LOSC Lille, SM Caen, FC Martigues Coaching career: AS Corbeil-Essonnes (player-coach), AS Saint-Étienne, Dijon FCO, Le Mans UC 72, LOSC Lille • The son of former LOSC player José Garcia, Rudi grew up in the Paris suburbs but started his playing career as an attacking midfielder at his father's old club. Spent six years with Les Dogues, going on to Caen (1988-91) and Martigues (1991-92) before injury prompted a move into coaching. • Having completed a sports science degree, started out as a player-coach at amateur side Corbeil-Essonne, whom he had represented as a youngster; did well enough to be offered a job as assistant coach at St-Etienne in 1998. • Worked as head coach for the first time in tandem with Jean-Guy Wallemme from January 2001 but the pair did not last long. Garcia re-emerged at the helm of Dijon in 2002, winning promotion to Ligue 2 in 2003/04 and taking the club to the French Cup semi-finals. • Spent five years at Dijon before returning to Ligue 1 as coach of Le Mans in 2007; led the club to a ninth-placed finish in his only season in charge. • Brought to Lille as 's successor in 2008, he briefly left after a fifth-placed finish in his first season only to be brought back into the fold. His side topped Ligue 1 at the turn of 2011, making them winter champions for the first time since 1949, and went on to take their third league title – and first since 1954 – before completing a domestic double with victory in the Coupe de France.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • Holders Chelsea FC are hoping to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United FC (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose. • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six in 2007/08 aged 43 years and 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta is the oldest outfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07. • Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's 1-1 draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared; he was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute. • Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195 days. He found the net in Olympiacos FC's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997. • Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 7 March 2012. Eight players, including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently FC Bayern München's Mario Gomez on matchday eight last season. • Before this season Barcelona had finished as group winners on 13 occasions, one more than Manchester United and Real Madrid. • Barcelona hold the record for successive wins in the UEFA Champions League proper with nine, between 18 September 2002 and 18 February 2003. RSC Anderlecht's 12 straight defeats (10 December 2003 to 23 November 2005) is also a competition record. • Five teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96), Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage) and Real Madrid (2011/12). • Fifteen teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, including Villarreal CF, FC Oţelul Galaţi and GNK Dinamo Zagreb in 2011/12. • Barcelona scored 20 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, equalling Manchester United's competition record from 1998/99. Barcelona scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage, a tally matched by Real Madrid last season. • Only RC Deportivo La Coruña (2004/05) and Maccabi Haifa FC (2009/10) have failed to score in a group stage. • Dinamo Zagreb conceded 22 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, a new record. The previous highest total was 19, shared by MŠK Žilina (2010/11), Debreceni VSC (2009/10), FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC (1995/96). • No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93), Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06), Villarreal (2005/06) and Manchester United (2010/11) all let in just one. • Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a victory in the competition. • The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96 were Legia Warszawa that same season before Dynamo Kyiv managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, as did Rangers FC and SV Werder Bremen in 2005/06. • Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.
