European Under 13 Championships

1st Division 2006

Svanholm Park, Copenhagen, Denmark

25-27 July 2006

Welcome to Denmark

As chairman of the Danish Association (DCF) I take great pleasure in welcoming the teams and officials from Holland, Ireland and Scotland to Denmark for this Under 13 European Championship 2006.

We thank the European Cricket Council (ECC) for their support in arranging the tournament. The ECC-tournaments are now an established part of the work with the talented cricketers all Europe and they have certainly made life easier for the cricket administrators in the above mentioned countries with the Standing Operations Procedures and call for a high standard on and off the field of play.

I welcome you all to Svanholm Park Cricket Ground, the new beautiful cricket ground in Denmark.

Tournaments like this do not come out of nowhere. DCF is immensely grateful to people at the local cricket club, Svanholm CC, fronted by the chairman of the club Søren Nissen, to the tournament referee Bjarne K. Jensen, the umpire manager Torsten Ørhøj and the tournament organizer Mickey Lund.

I hope you will enjoy your stay in Denmark. May the best team win!

Claus B S Hansen Chairman DCF

Welcome to Brøndby

It is a great pleasure for me to welcome the participants in the Under 13 European Championships in cricket to the municipality of Brøndby and Svanholm Park.

We extend a very warm welcome to our young visitors from Holland, Ireland and Scotland and of course your hosts from Denmark. We sincerely hope that this will be the start of a long international career for all of you.

Brøndby is a selfgoverning municipality about 12 kilometers south of the centre of Copenhagen with a population of around 35.000. Brøndby has grown big during the last 40 years and we have had our focus on sports development resulting in some modern and state of the art facilities e.g. the new football stadium for our famous football club BIF – a year ago again Danish champions - and the cricket facility Svanholm Park, the biggest and newest purpose built cricket stadium in Northern Europe of its kind.

It is the third time in the short history of Svanholm Park, that the facility hosts a European championship. First time in 2002 – we had the great pleasure to host another Under 13 tournament and last year we hosted the Under 17 tournament.

I am sure, you will enjoy the facility as much as they did and welcome you to Brøndby.

A message from the European Cricket Council

ECC European U13 1st Division Championship 2006

Welcome to the ECC European U13 1st Division Championship which is taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark from 25-27 July.

Cricket at youth level in Europe has excelled in recent years due to the huge efforts of the development programmes running in countries. Youth cricket in Denmark is improving and with the adoption of Plan 2010 the development in future looks to be in a more healthy state. Hopefully the players from all four countries taking part in this tournament will one day go onto represent their country at senior national level.

With three of Europe’s countries in the ICC Cricket World Cup, West Indies 2007, and Denmark in the ICC World Cricket League Div 2 next year, there is now an enormous goal for the many young cricketers in Europe to aim at, and this tournament is very much part of that process.

Personally I would like to thank the Tournament Organiser Mickey Lund, ECC Tournament Referee Bjarne K Jensen, all the match officials involved in the tournament and the many volunteers throughout the Svanholm Cricket Club who have worked so hard and kindly hosted the matches.

Good luck to all involved.

Yours sincerely

Richard Holdsworth ICC Regional Development Manager – Europe

Cricket in Denmark

Cricket arrived in Denmark in the 1860’s when British while laying railway lines across Denmark. One is reminded of this fact when one realizes that many Danish cricket clubs are situated alongside railway lines in the country.

Denmark, now an Associate Member of the ICC has some 2.500 cricketers in around 40 clubs dispersed around the country. The Danish Cricket Association sees one of its main tasks as development.

Recently the Danish Cricket Academy started with purpose of developing young Danish players. There is also a club programme to help the clubs get more players in their youth teams.

Yearly participation in tournaments with Netherlands, Scotland and Ireland at U-13, U-15, U-17, U-19, U-23 and senior level streghens the development programme. The policy is to access better young players as early as possible and to develop their skills through participation in winter and summer sessions under the supervision of qualified coaches.

Over the years Denmark has produced first class players such as Ole Mortensen and Amjad Khan (currently playing for Kent). This year Frederik Klokker had his first class debut for Warwickshire.
