Each plate very good condition, but contain calf over marbled boards, spine git remnants of plastic tape on verso of image not affecting with leather lettering pieces (two images. However, it is knows that the second edition was entirely reset, resulting in occasional variations with the page as well as spelling and punctuation and wording (Gilson A4 has a list of alterations). Covers and spines scuffed with some splitting along extremities, fore-edges slightly bumped in areas, joints strengthened, some signatures slightly pulled. TTwo out of six maroon morocco onlays to spine absent, but title lettering visible in blindstamp. There is scattered light foxing (even browntoning due to acidic paper), overall quite tight and certainly presentable copy considering age and scarcity. (#1949) $12,500 6 BADNALL, RICHARD (PRESENATION TO SON) Zelinda; A Persian Tale. London: Whittaker, Treacher & Co., 1830. First edition. Bound in full contemporary wavy grain calf 8 with bold gilt vine and blossom pattern on both covers and [BINDING, FINE- KATHARINE ADAMS] spine, beautiful crimson wavy silk endsheets. Inscribed by the Bound by Katharine Adams for Sydney Cockerell author to his son, William Badnall. A fascinating and Delisle, Leopold. Les Heures Dites de Jean Pucelle. Paris: vanishingly scarce book of poetry by Richard Badnall, silk, Imprime par Philippe Renouard, Librarie D. Morgand, Edouard ribbon and button tycoon of the early 1800's in Leek, Rahir, 1910. First edition. Cockerell tipped into the front dated Dec. 3, 1909, mentioning American Fairy Tales. his research, examining some photographs and referring to Chicago: George M. several individuals (Holford, Yates Thompson and Perrins). Hill, 1901. First edition. Finally, Cockerell has written a note on p.81 concerning the Original beige cloth with provenance of a manuscript. A wonderful binding, with all its superb color cover presentation and provenance highlights. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– ABSTRACT 3 ABSTRACT During the course of the nineteenth century children’s early reading experience was radically transformed; late eighteenth-century children were expected to cut their teeth on morally improving texts, while Victorian children learned to read more playfully through colourful picturebooks. This thesis explores the reasons for this paradigm change through a study of the key developments in children’s publishing from 1783 to 1900. Successively examining an amateur author, a commercial publisher, an innovative editor, and a brilliant illustrator with a strong interest in progressive theories of education, the thesis is alive to the multiplicity of influences on children’s reading over the century. Chapter One outlines the scope of the study. Chapter Two focuses on Ellenor Fenn’s graded dialogues, Cobwebs to catch flies (1783), initially marketed as part of a reading scheme, which remained in print for more than 120 years. Fenn’s highly original method of teaching reading through real stories, with its emphasis on simple words, large type, and high-quality pictures, laid the foundations for modern nursery books. Chapter Three examines John Harris, who issued a ground- breaking series of colour-illustrated rhyming stories and educational books in the 1810s, marketed as ‘Harris’s Cabinet of Amusement and Instruction’.

    Art Appreciation Lecture Series 2015 Meet the Masters: Highlights from the Scottish National Gallery “The Reconciliation of Oberon and Titania” Sir Joseph Noel Paton Craig Judd 2/3 September 2015 Born off Wooer’s alley in Dunfermline Fife to damask workers to knighthood and works acquired by Queen Victoria the career of Joseph Noel Paton (1821-1901) is literally one of rags to riches. Studying briefly in London 1843, he became close friends with John Everett Millais and was invited to be a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood an offer he rejected. Nevertheless much of his work is infused with the same spirit of self conscious moralising conservatism. “The Reconciliation of Oberon and Titania”(1847) and its companion piece “The Quarrel of Oberon and Titania” (1846) easily captured critical and public imagination, won prizes and provided the inital entré for the artist into the Royal Scottish Academy.Paton was an avid antiquary and folklorist swept up in the tartan led fantasies of the Prince Albert Queen Victoria/ Balmoral Scottish Revival consequently many of his works are skilled programmatic illustrations derived from literature. Also a skilled watercolourist Paton became the Queens Limner for Scotland in 1865. “The Reconciliation of Oberon and Titania”(1847) represents the high water mark of a billabong of Victorian taste. A surprisingly wild and sensual mass of swirling flesh it depicts the happy conclusion of William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummers Nights Dream”.This lecture will introduce the genre of Fairy Painting as well as discuss the often overlooked career and broader cultural contexts of Sir Joseph Noel Paton.

TA T hen Robert Louis Stevenson rhymed "children" with "bewildering" r V in the trial edition of his verses for children, his friend Sidney Colvin objected. "A Cockney rhyme," he jotted into the margin of the little book titled Penny Whistles.1 Stevenson responded with his own marginal jotting, "Good enough for me.... These are rhymes, jingles; I don't go for eternity." Whether or not he thought he was in the race for immortality when he published his little rhymes, A Child's Garden of Verses, first published in 1885, has proved to have great survival power. It is still available in all sorts of editions, vari- ously illustrated, and is still a preeminent choice of educators as well as of parents and care-givers. It is a book for children too young to express an opinion of its charms; but many of us re-open it as adults to discover just how deeply it has sunk into our pores.
