GOVERNMENT OF INDIA DEFENCE LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO:2744 ANSWERED ON:15.03.2001 INTERNATIONAL NAVAL FLEET REVIEW AJAY SINGH CHAUTALA;ALE NARENDRA;UMMAREDDY VENKATESWARLU Will the Minister of DEFENCE be pleased to state: (a) whether Indian Navy has organised an International Naval Fleet Review recently in Mumbai; (b) if so, the details thereof; (c) the names of the countries involved and actually participated in this exercise, along with the number of ships took part in this exercise, country-wise; (d) the total expenditure incurred in this regard; (e) whether the Naval Authorities did not allow the Industrial Units around Mumbai to work on the days of rehearsal; (f) if so, the estimated loss of production occurred due to closure of industries; and (g) the steps being taken to compensate for the losses accrued to all concerned in this regard? Answer MINISTER OF DEFENCE (SHRI GEORGE FERNANDES) (a) Yes, Sir. (b) & (c): The International Fleet Review was conducted on 17th February, 2001 in which War Ships from 19 foreign countries took part. The details of foreign participants are annexed. (d) A sum of Rs. 2.87 crores was sanctioned by the Government for conducting the event. (e) The Naval authorities have informed that they had requested the Government o f Maharashtra to examine the feasibility o f re- scheduling the maintenance periods of various industries so as to coincide with the period of the Fleet Review. This was done as part of the clean air campaign. The industrial units, however, were free to work on the days of rehearsals and also on the Fleet Review, if it was not considered feasible by them. (f) & (g): Information is being obtained from the State Government of Maharashtra.
