The order of the matches is yet to be determined, largely because there is the real possibility that Didsbury will be involved in two of the day’s finals. Details of the latest matches are included in this newsletter, but the South Manchester side will definitely be involved in their first Knockout Final, and stand a very real chance of being in the T20 Divisional Competition final. Further details will be posted on the League website and on my Twitter account once known.     Knit one..Purl one Jim Simpson’s Prisoner-of-War Rug In October 1943 at the age of 29 years, RAAF Flight Officer James Orgill Simpson (Jim) from Nariel, Victoria was in a Lancaster Bomber on his first mission, and was shot down over Germany. Jim was incarcerated as Prisoner of War in Stalag IVB for the next 18 months. Jim was a tall strong and determined country man from the mountains in the Upper Murray area, a boy who had grown up trapping rabbits, shooting, riding a horse, and working on the farm…and also knitting. A pastime his mother had taught him, never imagining how it would affect his life. Over the long months of being in the prison camp Jim collected wool, knitted, taught other prisoners to knit, and designed a 2m x 2.1m rug from memory, depicting an incredibly accurate map of Australia with mountains, lakes, islands, State boundaries and Coats of Arms. It is rare and unique in its design, size and condition, and has historical significance internationally as an example of the ingenuity and resilience of the Australian soldier. The design and creation itself has some significance in both its aesthetic and interpretative potential, illustrating the retained knowledge from a limited education system of Australia’s geography, and the social implications of a thirty-year- old man from an isolated farm in that era knowing how to knit complex patterns and designs. The precise provenance of the rug enriches its value both historically and aesthetically by providing detailed accounts of its design and construction under adverse conditions.

    THE DAZZLER EXTRA – ON THIS WEEK – APRIL 26 April 25 2010 A new venture for the League as a new season kicked off with its defending champions hosting a showpiece friendly against a league representative team. Aside from 2019 winners Didsbury, Poynton are the only club to win the CWCL on just one occasion, and their powerful line-up amassed 149-6 in a rain reduced 30 overs here. Kate Holt top scored with 31 while Abbey Gore’s spell of 3-14 remains the record bowling performance for the League XI. The League team started well, with Natalie Heap making 39, but Poynton spinners Hannah Gradwell and Coral Murphy shared seven wickets and wrapped up a 37-run win. League XI: Emma Barlow (Appleton, captain), Jess Richards (Bowdon, wk), Ali Cutler, Nic Capes (Chester BH), Natalie Heap (Hawarden Park), Sarah Sutcliffe (Bowdon), Abbey Gore, Sam Hilton (Neston), Jess Lewis (Appleton), Jemma Bentley (Oakmere), Leesa Mellon (Hyde) April 28 2013 Lorna Thomas made 125 not out and Ali Cutler an unbeaten 107 as Chester Boughton Hall scored 268-0 in their first game of the year against Stalybridge St Paul’s. 2013 would see Chester crowned champions for the first time in five years. April 28 2013 2013 would also be the year Appleton’s title winning run ended – they couldn’t quite manage four years in a row, although they did finish as runners-up, and no club can match their record of seven successive top two final placings, which they achieved between 2010 and 2016. In contrast to Chester, the calculators were out for Appleton’s first match, as they beat Romiley by four runs on faster run rate in a rain-affected match.
