Nickelodeon's Heroes in a Half Shell Return to Battle Saturday, Oct. 12, at 11:00 A.M Nickelodeon's Heroes In A Half Shell Return To Battle Saturday, Oct. 12, At 11:00 a.m. (ET/PT), During The Season Two Debut Of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Masked Vigilante Casey Jones Joins Forces with the Crime-Fighting Turtles BURBANK, Calif., Sept. 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Nickelodeon launches season two of the hit animated series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Saturday, Oct. 12, at 11:00 a.m. (ET/PT), continuing the crime-fighting adventures of the four mutant turtles—Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo. The season one finale ranked as the number-one telecast for the day across all TV with boys (August 8, 8-9:00 p.m. ET/PT). The half-hour weekly series is layered with comedy, action and sci- fi, and the unique CG animation draws inspiration from both American and Japanese animation, showcasing a stylistic effect of a printed comic. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles airs regularly on Saturdays at 11:00 a.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon. The executive producers for season two are Ciro Nieli and Peter Hastings. (Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130926/NY87425 ) Nickelodeon alum Josh Peck (Drake & Josh) rounds out the cast this season as TMNT fan-favorite Casey Jones, a teenage hockey player with a rebellious attitude and a lust for cracking down on bad guys. Season two starts off with a bang in the premiere episode, "The Mutation Situation." In the episode, the Turtles discover that the alien Kraang survived their previous showdown and now have dropped mutagen canisters all over NYC. Throughout the season, the Turtles' mission is to recover the canisters before more mutants can be created. Meanwhile, the Kraang and Shredder have united to put an end to the Turtles once and for all, which results in some very scary characters coming after the brothers. With Casey Jones' help, the Turtles take on some of the most bizarre and dangerous villains they have ever seen, all the while trying to unravel the mystery regarding April O'Neil and her importance to the Kraang. Season two stars Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings) as Raphael, Rob Paulsen (Planet Sheen) as Donatello, Greg Cipes (Teen Titans) as Michelangelo, Jason Biggs (Orange is the New Black) as Leonardo, Mae Whitman (Parenthood) as April O'Neil, Hoon Lee (Royal Pains) as Master Splinter and Kevin Michael Richardson (Penguins of Madagascar) as Shredder. Joining the cast will be Josh Peck (Drake & Josh) as Casey Jones, and Corey Feldman (The Goonies) reoccurs as Slash. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Vol.3 will be available on iTunes with a free re-cap of season one starting October 7. All new episodes will be available for purchase on iTunes, Xbox Video, Amazon Instant Video, PlayStation Store, Vudu and Samsung Media Hub, and also for streaming on the Nick App day after air. Fans can also visit Nick.com and the Nick App for exciting teaser clips, music videos and mash ups, and compilation videos showcasing the best butt-kicking moments of the series. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is based on four mutant turtles—Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo—trained in the art of ninjutsu by their mutant rat sensei, Master Splinter, who teaches the turtles to battle evil from the New York City sewers. Nickelodeon's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles premiered Sept. 29, 2012 and was an instant hit, drawing almost 12 million viewers during its premiere weekend. Funnier and with more ninjutsu than ever before, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles explores the companionship of four teenage brothers learning to rely on themselves and one another as they unravel the mystery of their existence and grow to become the heroes in a half-shell that they are destined to be. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles property won the 2013 TOTY Awards for Property of the Year and Boy Toy of the Year. Nickelodeon, now in its 34th year, is the number-one entertainment brand for kids. • Teen Titans Go! to the Movies’
Movie Review: ‘Teen Titans Go! To the Movies’ NEW YORK — Though a mixed bag of good values and a bit of dodgy humor renders it acceptable but not ideal for kids, sharp satire makes the witty animated comedy “Teen Titans Go! To the Movies” (Warner Bros.) a hoot for their elders. As it skewers a broad range of subjects, from some politicians’ preoccupation with the size of their hands to 1980s-style anthems of affirmation, the film wins smiles and laughs at a remarkably steady pace. Even the plot is a vehicle for mockery. A youthful version of Batman’s sidekick Robin (voice of Scott Menville) becomes obsessed by the fact that, unlike all other superheroes, no movie has ever been made about him. The other members of the ensemble of crime fighters Robin leads — shape-shifting Beast Boy (voice of Greg Cipes), human-mechanical mashup Cyborg (voice of Khary Payton), teleporting Raven (voice of Tara Strong) and alien princess Starfire (voice of Hynden Walch) — don’t share his fixation with Hollywood. But, as supportive pals, they go along for the ride. Through their battle with master mind manipulator Slade (voice of Will Arnett) the team acquires the evil nemesis considered essential to their quest. And they eventually convince Tinseltown director Jade Wilson (voice of Kristen Bell) to feature them. But Robin’s ego and the silliness of his pals get in the way, leading to a breakup of the group. As Robin and his buddies strive to be taken seriously, this big-screen adaptation of the Cartoon Network TV series hilariously harpoons a wide range of pop-culture targets in a manner that will amuse grownups.

  • Nicole Lawrence Thesis
The Pennsylvania State University The Graduate School College of Communications SASSY COWS AND MAGICAL JUJU: REPRESENTATIONS OF RACE AND ETHNICITY ON THREE NICKTOONS PROGRAMS A Thesis in Media Studies by Nicole M. Lawrence © 2012 Nicole M. Lawrence Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts December 2012 ii The thesis of Nicole M. Lawrence was reviewed and approved* by the following: Matthew P. McAllister Professor of Communications Thesis Adviser Matthew F. Jordan Associate Professor of Communications Michael Elavsky Associate Professor of Communications Marie Hardin Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School. iii ABSTRACT This thesis critiques programming on the children’s media channel Nicktoons for patterns of racial representation -- including the presence of stereotyping -- in characters. As research has shown that representation of ethnicity may be especially influential to children viewers, and that there are precedents for problematic racial representations in popular media, including children's media, the continued examination of patterns of racial-ethnic group member representation and stereotyping in character depictions has significant implications. Utilizing textual analysis, three Nicktoons’ programs are examined for racialized constructions of characters, including constructions with hegemonic and ethnocentric implications. The thesis argues that three programs, Back at the Barnyard, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Tak and the Power of JuJu problematically construct analogies of African Americans, Asians, and native peoples, respectively. The constructions in these Nicktoons programs typically “other” these groups when contrasted to dominant white culture -- or at least the animated stand-ins for dominant white culture -- and imply cultural hierarchies in which white culture is superior and/or the norm.

  • Gender Roles & Occupations
1 Gender Roles & Occupations: A Look at Character Attributes and Job-Related Aspirations in Film and Television Stacy L. Smith, PhD Marc Choueiti Ashley Prescott & Katherine Pieper, PhD Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism University of Southern California An Executive Report Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media Our earlier research shows that gender roles are still stereotyped in entertainment popular with children.1 For example, female characters in feature films populate less than 30% of all speaking roles. A slightly better percentage emerges across our research on gender roles in children’s television programming. Not only are on screen females present less frequently than on screen males, they are often sexualized, domesticated, and sometimes lack gainful employment. To illustrate this last point, our recent analysis2 of every first run general audience film (n=21) theatrically released between September 2006 and September 2009 reveals that a higher percentage of males (57.8%) than females (31.6%) are depicted with an occupation. While females hold marginally more professional jobs than their male counterparts (24.6% vs. 20.9%), women are noticeably absent in some of the most prestigious occupational posts. Across more than 300 speaking characters, not one female is depicted in the medical sciences (e.g., doctor, veterinarian), executive business suites (e.g., CEO, CFO), legal world (e.g., attorney, judge), or political arena. More optimistically, 6 of the 65 working females (9%) are shown with a job in the hard sciences or as pilots/astronauts. These findings suggest that females have not shattered as many glass ceilings in the “reel” world as one might suspect.

Shio and Kosho, with the help of YOU the congoers, defeated the alien forces and grounded Shoyu on planet Vidya—a world where the physics, landmarks, and inhabitants have developed into something remarkably similar to the video games we are familiar with here on Earth. However, it seems that Shoyu would not be defeated so easily. After crash landing on Vidya, he began to court the local inhabitants of the planet to join him and fight for his cause! With the planet he was supposed to be trapped on becoming a new source of power, it was up to you Kami-Congoers once again to rise to the occasion and help Shio and Kosho stop Shoyu! (This seems to happen a lot. Who would have known that having the Spirit of the Yandere Black Turtle for a magical animal mascot would have brought so much drama to Kami-Con? Oh, well!) With the help of the congoers, Shoyu only managed to recruit three powerful allies— Ken from Street Fighter, Princess Peach from Super Mario Bros., and Link from The Legend of Zelda. Shio and Kosho recruited Ryu from Street Fighter, and Vault Boy from Fallout. These heroes met on the battlefield known asSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate! It was truly an epic match—and in the end, it was Shio and Kosho who proved victorious! His coup having been thwarted, Shoyu agreed to team back up with the congirls to continue their journey through space toward World Conquest!
