ANIMATED SERIES TWO PERFORMANCES ONLY SEPTEMBER 28–29, 2018 SAN FRANCISCO (July 16, 2018) – Feinstein’s at the Nikko is thrilled to present ANIMANIACS IN CONCERT!, starring Emmy Award-winning legendary voice actor Rob Paulsen, who supplied many of the voices from the hilarious ‘90s animated series, including Yakko Warner, Dr. Scratch’n’Sniff, and Pinky from “Pinky and the Brain,” and three-time Emmy Award-winning composer/writer Randy Rogel, who wrote many of the comedy songs used in the iconic, hit Warner Bros. animated series “Animaniacs.” Performing a playlist of songs from the show—including “Yakko’s World,” “When You’re Traveling from Nantucket,” and “Wakko’s America—Paulsen and Rogel will share fun anecdotes and silly secrets about the making of the series, as well as show clips from the cartoon series which ran from 1992–1998. Performances of ANIMANIACS IN CONCERT! will take place on Friday, September 28 (8 p.m.) and Saturday, September 29 (8 p.m.). Maybe you don’t know Rob Paulsen, but you know “Pinky and the Brain,” “Animaniacs,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” “Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius,” and most of the other animated projects that Paulsen has been part of as a voice actor for nearly three decades. With over 2,000 half-hours of animation credits, Rob’s versatility shines in his starring roles as the voices of Dr. Scratch’n’Sniff in the Peabody and two-time Emmy Award-winning series, “Animaniacs.” Rob himself has been nominated for three Emmy Awards (one win) and six Annie Awards (three wins). And Rob is back on the road with ANIMANIACS IN CONCERT!, a raucous celebration of animation, music, and comedy where the show’s best-loved songs (by composer and fellow ANIMANIACS IN CONCERT! performer Randy Rogel) are performed alongside the cartoons in concert and symphony halls across the country. Paulsen has rededicated himself to bringing joy and happiness to his fans, particularly the ones who have inspired him along the way. Randy Rogel has won three Emmy Awards (nominated for ten), a Peabody Award, two Annie awards, three Leo Awards, and the Ovation Award. He recently co-wrote the hit song “Poisonous Love” for Kristen Chenoweth with John Powell for the major motion picture “Rio 2.” He was show-runner for the animated series “1001 Nights” and won Leo Awards for Writing and Best Animated Series. He has worked with all the major studios, including spending nine years on staff at Warner Bros. Animation where he began as an original writer on the “Batman” series and then joined the staff of Steven Spielberg’s “Animaniacs,” for which he wrote most of the songs and many of the scripts. Located within Hotel Nikko (222 Mason Street, San Francisco), Feinstein’s at the Nikko presents a wide range of entertainers from stage and screen all within an intimate 140-seat cabaret setting. There is a $20 food and beverage minimum per person inside the showroom which guests can use towards cocktails as well as a variety of small plates crafted exclusively for Feinstein’s at the Nikko, through Restaurant Anzu. Cheese and dessert platters will also be available in the showroom. Guests of Feinstein’s at the Nikko can enjoy a variety of food and beverage options before performances. Kanpai Lounge, located in Hotel Nikko’s lobby, offers light cuisine, a full bar and specialty cocktails. Restaurant Anzu, Hotel Nikko’s intimate restaurant located on the second floor, serves sustainable California cuisine enhanced with Asian flavors. I focus on the DC Animated Universe, the popular adaptation of DC Comics characters and concepts into all-ages programming. This adapted universe started with Batman: The Animated Series and comprised several shows on multiple networks, all of which fit into a shared universe based on their comic book counterparts. The adaptation of these properties is heavily reliant to intertextuality across DC Comics media. The shared universe developed within the television medium acted as an early example of comic book media adapting the idea of shared universes, a process that has been replicated with extreme financial success by DC and Marvel (in various stages of fruition). I address the process of adapting DC Comics properties in television, dividing it into “strict” or “loose” adaptations, as well as derivative adaptations that add new material to the comic book canon. This process was initially slow, exploding after the first series (Batman: The Animated Series) changed networks and Saturday morning cartoons flourished, allowing for more opportunities for producers to create content. References, crossover episodes, and the later series Justice League Unlimited allowed producers to utilize this shared universe to develop otherwise impossible adaptations that often became lasting additions to DC Comics publishing.

Calvin Thomas ABSTRACT The Batman media franchise (comics, movies, novels, television, and cartoons) is unique because no other form of written or visual texts has as many artists, audiences, and forms of expression. Understanding the various artists and audiences and what Batman means to them is to understand changing trends and thinking in American culture. The character of Batman has developed into a symbol with relevant characteristics that develop and evolve with each new story and new author. The Batman canon has become so large and contains so many different audiences that it has become a franchise that can morph to fit any group of viewers/readers. Our understanding of Batman and the many readings of him gives us insight into ourselves as a culture in our particular place in history.
