In an exciting development for cricket in PNG the in augural Corporate Women’s Cup was held on Sunday 28 March with 16 company teams comprising over 200 female participants. T his is the first time that an event of this type has been held for women’s cricket in PNG and it was received with rapturous e nthusiasm. Teams of 8 players competed in 8-overs-a-side cricket and by the conclusion of the pool and semi-final rounds it was The N ational and Pacific Technologies who were to face off in the final. Set a target of 70 for victory, The National waited until the final b all of the match to secure victory, sneaking a single off the last delivery to reach their target. The tournament also recognised the f ollowing players for their achievements: o Debra Tau - Pacific Technologies: Best Batting o M aba Dar oa - Kina Securities 1: Best Bowling o Simah John - Pacific Technologies: Best Fielding H aving recovered from another successful tournament Cricket PNG are already in preparation for their next major event: the Badhili H ardware POMCA Super 6’s. Sponsored by the number one hardware store in PNG the tournament will run over the four Sundays b etween 11 April and 2 May. The tournament will run across six grades and the club who amasses the most points in total will be r ewarded with a K2000 prize cheque and a comprehensive cricket equipment kit. Good luck to both the competing teams and Cricket P NG organisers for this upcoming tournament. C ricket Fiji has also been busy coordinating their Easter tournament, held over the first weekend in April, and including the highest n umber of teams that the tournament has seen in recent years. In even more exciting news for the tournament, a Sydney-based team t he Friends United Sports Club, made the trip to Suva for the event, along with Cricket Fiji associates Nadi, Lautoka, Komo and Oneata w ho have not fielded teams in the competition for a number of years. Another first for the tournament is its use of the Twenty20 f ormat of the game. By Easter Monday the tournament was gearing up for an exciting day of finals cricket. Moce and Suva Warriors both played strongly to earn their positions in the grand final, however severe storm weather intervened in the fifth over of Moce’s innings forcing play to be called off. The match is slated to be replayed on 6 April Left: Players from 16 teams get set to compete in the inaugural Corporate Women’s Cup Challenge Newsflash – March 2010 Development tak es centre stage Cricket travels north in Vanuatu Cricket in Vanuatu is on the move with schools in the North Efate region and off- shore islands recently assimilated into the Digicel Community Cricket Development Program. This is a part of the Vanuatu Cricket Association’s (VCA) greater Out Reach Program that is guiding the spread of the sport throughout the country. To facilitate the development, VCA is employing another four part time development officers and conducting a Teacher In-Service Training program which will assist teachers in learning and understanding the skills and rules of cricket. Establishing cricket in schools is VCA’s first step to engraining the sport of cricket in the local cultures, with the eventual aim the establishment of local senior men’s and women’s competitions. Left: school children from Emau Island in action BSP School Kriket to educate the next generation of PNG superstars BSP Bank and Cricket PNG have joined forces and will be rolling out a nationally-focused school cricket development program that aims to reach 50 000 children per year from 2010. With a three-year commitment to the program from each partner, the initiative aims to build the self-esteem and healthy lifestyle habits of young people in PNG through the sport of cricket. BSP School Kriket will feature five stages, culminating in a regional inter-school tournament. The initiative will see the recruitment of a number of staff to Cricket PNG, as well as the education of numerous teachers and volunteers in each school. Masses of cricket equipment in the appropriate BSP green is currently being shipped around the country in preparation for this mammoth development program that will see cricket being taken to all parts of PNG. Right: the future stars of PNG cricket take part in the BSP School Kriket program Advanced Coaching & Development Seminar to land in Indonesia The seventh EAP Advanced Coaching and Development (AC & D) Seminar is about to take place in Jakarta Indonesia, the first time that the event has been held in an EAP member country outside of Australia and New Zealand. The seminar brings together individuals from across the region to promote their education in coaching and allows participants to learn from each other, along with leading coaches from the region. Recognised as an ICC First Class competition, Gavera will be the first PNG national to play in a competition of this standing. At 21 years of age, Gavera will depart for Scotland in late April, and hopes to compete in the Scottish Cup Final on 4 September. This is not the first time that the right arm fast bowler has travelled for his cricket, having already completed a season at each of the Wanderers Cricket Club in Townsville and the South Brisbane Cricket Club. The EAP wish Willie all the best in his travels over the coming European summer and look forward to hearing about his stellar performances. Korea host Fiji The Korea Cricket Association and Cricket Fiji have furthe r firmed their relations as members of the one ICC Development Region as Korea hosted Fiji on their way to Nepal for the re cent Division 5 World Cricket League tournament. Over a two day stop over individuals of Cricket Fiji’s coaching staff and playing group took members of the Korea Cricket Association through their paces, completing batting and bowling drills as well as biomechanics analysis. The Korea participants reciprocated with a well-planned outing for local, but not-so-spicy cuisine.
