Speaking at the launch, the President of the VCA, Mark Stafford reflected on what has been a hugely successful year for cricket in Vanuatu. "It all began with the Vanuatu Premier League (VPL) back in Feb 2009, the historic series win over Fiji in May, Vanuatu's elevation to Associate membership of the ICC in June, runners up in U-15 tournament in Indonesia, runners up of U-19 tournament in PNG and World Cup Qualifying Tournament in Toronto and then the Senior Men taking out the tournament in Samoa last month that will hopefully see us back in World cricket League at Division 8." Yo u would be forgiven for thinking that these cricketers needed some well earned rest after all these conquests. The PSL will be commencing on 14 No vember 2009 and will conclude on 21 January 2010. The competition will consist of a T20 and 50 over round between four evenly matched sides (namely the Kingfishers, Hawks, Monarchs & Falcons) that boast the best of Vanuatu cricket's elites at U-15, U-19 & senior levels. It i s going to be the first time that cricket has been played over the summer break - something the players and coaches are really looking forward to with gre at anticipation. The VCA wishes to urge cricket and sports fans to go along to these games and witness the talents on display - you never know what they mi ght do - cricket's a funny old game! I n one of the most exhilarating innings you could ever hope to see, young Mele/ Vanuatu Under 19’s and Vanuatu senior team star P atrick Matautaava single-handedly destroyed whatever chance Malapoa College had in the Final of the Barrett & Partners Trophy th on Saturday at Kazaa field. Coming in at 8 for 202 in the 40 over with the game in the balance despite a fine century from Andrew M ansale, Matautaava went on a rampage. st S tarting carefully with 2 dot balls, the next 5 balls produced four sixes and a four. This set the pattern. From only the 31 ball he had f aced he brought up his century with another towering six, and went on to finish up 146 not out off 43 balls. He hit 18 sixes and with young Vikerie Taravaki put on an unbroken 121 for the last wicket of which Vikerie’s contribution was 2 not out. Such was his c ommand of the game that he able to dominate the strike with a single off the last ball of most overs. Vikerie only faced 6 balls in 7 o vers. One over went 6,6,6,6,6 and then a single as a sign of his control and his dominance. F rom 8 for 202 in the 41st over Mele went on to make a virtually impossible 9 for 365 off their 50 overs. Cricket PNG has won the coveted award for “Best Overall Cricket Development Programme”, due to their efforts in developing the game across a range of key areas. These included exceptionally strong performances by all National Teams in regional events, and promising results in some Global Events. In addition to this, Cricket PNG launched a National Cricket Development Program, employing 4 Regional Cricket Managers (RCM’s) in rural areas of PNG. Cricket Indonesia has completed a hat-trick of wins in the category for “Best Junior Cricket Initiative” with the successful establishment of a new association, the Kupang Cricket Association. With cricket only introduced to Kupang in the past 12 months as part of the Ultra Milk junior development program, a well-coordinated committee and the presence of a strong coach has helped the game thrive. This resulted in an impressive 3rd place from 15 regional teams at the 2009 Ultra Milk Under 15’s Championships. Cricket PNG has been rewarded for their exceptional efforts in organising the Pacific MMI Don’t Drink and Drive Legends Event, winning the “Best Cricket Promotion & Marketing Programme” for 2009.

The Effectiveness of a Cricket Programme for Engaging People with a Disability in Physical Activity in Fiji Emma Beckmana, Tony Rossib, Stephanie Hanrahana,c, Steven Rynnea and Jeremy Dorovolomod aSchool of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences, The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia; bSchool of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia; cSchool of Psychology, The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia; dSchool of Education, The University of the South Pacific, Suva, Fiji KEYWORDS Confidence; cricket; function; Pacific; pedometer; physical activity; self-esteem; sport for development ABSTRACT Sport has been demonstrably linked to health particularly through community-based education and development programmes. However, research continues to identify low participation rates of people with a disability in sport. Programmes to address the participation of people with a disability in sport can be challenging, particularly in locations in the Pacific region. The primary aim of this project was to determine the activity levels of people with a disability during a cricket programme delivered in Fiji by Cricket Fiji with support from the International Cricket Council based in Melbourne Australia. A secondary aim was to investigate the relationship between levels of physical activity in the programme and self-esteem and indicators of general adaptive functioning. Results showed that means for self-description scales were high. Step count analysis showed a wide range of steps taken during the programme but similar steps between males and females. Correlations between self-description items and steps showed moderate relationships for self-esteem and confidence. This study showed that the programme was able to effectively provide physical activity opportunities for people with a disability and provides context to the development of longitudinal programmes that should aim to improve physical activity participation and health literacy in this population long term.
