Papua New Guinea clean up at 2008 SP Sports Awards

PNG Cric ket once again scooped the pool at the glittering 2008 SP Sports Awards, held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in May.

The SP S ports Awards honour sporting excellence and achievement by individuals and teams from PNG, and represent one of the hi ghest honours to be achieved in the PNG sporting community. The SP Sports Awards were televised live across the coun try.

After be ing nominated for six categories, PNG Cricket personnel walked away with three awards, the most of any sport.

The U19 Telikom PNG Cricket Team took out the prestigious award of Junior Team of the Year for their efforts in winning the U19 Regional World Qualifiers in Vanuatu, and Captain Colin Amini and Vice Captain Arua Dikana were present to accept t he awar d.

Clive Ell y was also honoured for his excellence in and contribution to umpiring in 2007 by winning the “Technical Official of the Ye ar” category. In 2007, Clive umpired at several ICC events including the ICC EAP U15 Cricket 8s in Samoa, the U19 ICC EAP World Cup Qualifiers in Vanuatu, and the ICC EAP Trophy in Auckland. When in Auckland, Clive also attended the Adva nced Umpiring Seminar and became an accredited umpiring trainer. To cap off a fine year, Clive was appointed to the IC C EAP Umpires Panel in early 2008.

Cheryl A mini capped off an outstanding year in cricket circles when she was awarded the Volunteer of the Year. The award w ill sit proudly next to her 2008 ICC EAP Volunteer of the Year Award. Cheryl’s professionalism, dedication and commitm ent to cricket in many roles in the past year made her a worthy recipient of the award.

SA MOA’S PRESIDENTS XI DEFEAT THE WELLINGTON-SAMOA ENGLISH CRICKET TEAM

The Sam oa International Cricket Association (SICA) hosted yet another international cricket team last Saturday at the Garden C ricket Ovals; the Wellington-Samoa English Cricket Team. With the freshly cut grass, new line markings and sun shining down on the Garden Cricket Ovals, it was a magnificent day for a gam e of cricket! Both teams arrived early, with an 11am start to the game. The Wellington boys got off to a good start by winni ng the toss and electing to bat.

Cricket D evelopment Officer and skipper of Samoa’s President’s XI, Sa’o Mulivai led his team out to the field. The team sta rted off very attacking, hitting two boundaries in the first over. Their luck didn’t last long though, with opening bowler Lautala F uimaono claiming two wickets in his first two deliveries. Unfortunately Lautala did not get his hat-trick on the third ball, alth ough he did have another opportunity in his fourth over. Wellingto n’s opening batter Allan could not build a partnership with any of his team mates, scoring a lonesome 30 runs and top scoring for the Wellington team. Number 9 batsman Lino came out firing at the tail end scoring 21 runs not out, but that was not enough. The Wellington team were all out for a mere 74 runs. After the lunch break, Samoa’s Presidents XI took to the crease . Opening batter Suni Faiilagi stayed in for most of the innings, finishing with 14 runs. It was the skipper Sa’o Mulivai who led the way with the bat, hitting a quick 42 runs not out off th just 24 balls. His innings included three 6’s and four 4’s. Sa’o hit the winning runs in the 15 over, giving Samoa’s President’s XI a very convincing win over the Wellington team. Player of the match was won by Lautala Fuimaono who absolu tely tore through Wellington’s batting line up. Lautala finished with 5 wickets for 26 runs; including a hat-trick in his fourth ove r.
