SIXTEENTH NORTHERN MARIANAS COMMONWEALTH LEGISLATURE

A SENATE RESOLUTION

Commending and congratulating Mount Carmel High School Mock Trial Team as well as the other participants in this year’s mock trial competition on their discipline and hard work in preparation for the mock trial competition; and to recognize the administrators and mock trial team coaches for their contribution and guidance in the success of this year’s mock trial competition.

1 WHEREAS, this year’s mock trial competition was held 7th day of March 2008, at 2 the Guma Hustisia, ; and 3 WHEREAS, the theme of this year’s mock trial competition was “Murder”; and 4 WHEREAS, the mock trial teams of Mount Carmel High School, Marianas 5 Baptist Academy, , High School, Southern High School, 6 Grace Christian Academy, High School, and High School participated in this 7 year’s mock trial competition; and 8 WHEREAS, the Mount Carmel High School Mock Trial Team won First Place in 9 the mock trial competition of the case captioned, “CNMI vs. Francis Camacho”; followed 10 by Marianas Baptist Academy in Second Place; and 11 WHEREAS, the Mount Carmel High School Mock Trial Team consisted of the 12 following students: Leticia Cabrera, Angela Salas, Ruby Venus, Soo Ji Ha, Mike 13 Villagomez, Chiaki Hirosawa, Rachel Kim, and Min Joo Jung who exemplified 14 excellence and poise in the presentation of their case; and 15 WHEREAS, the success of Mount Carmel High School Mock Trial Team can be 16 attributed to the encouragement and moral support of their coaches: Mr. Galvin Deleon 17 Guerrero, teacher-coach; Mr. Joe Taijeron, attorney-coach; and Mr. Ed Buckingham, 18 attorney-coach; and,

1 WHEREAS, through the tireless contributions and instructional guidance of 2 participating school administrators and mock trial team coaches, this year’s mock trial 3 competition was a success; and 4 WHEREAS, the mock trial teams have vested a great amount of time and 5 discipline in preparing for this year’s mock trial competition; and 6 WHEREAS, encouragement and enthusiasm are key components of a successful 7 mock trial competition; and 8 WHEREAS, the winners of this year’s mock trial competition earn the respect of 9 their peers as “leaders of tomorrow”, where hard work and discipline are attributes of 10 leadership; and 11 WHEREAS, teamwork prevailed in the mock trial settings, in defense and 12 prosecution teams alike; and 13 WHEREAS, the simulated court activity of mock trial competitions encourage 14 young intelligent minds an opportunity to experience courtroom deliberations and trial 15 proceedings; and 16 WHEREAS, the judicial atmosphere creates a learned respect for the judicial 17 process and the laws governing our people and land; and 18 WHEREAS, the outstanding achievements of the mock trial teams, their school 19 administrators and team coaches are commendable and reflect a profound interest in the 20 governance and maintenance of law and judicial process; now, therefore, 21 BE IT RESOLVED, that the Senate of the Sixteenth Northern Mariana 22 Legislature does hereby, on behalf of the people of the Commonwealth, recognize the 23 outstanding accomplishments and achievements of the First Place Winner, Mount Carmel 24 High School Mock Trial Team on its success; and congratulates and commends the many 25 mock trial participants, school administrators and mock trial team coaches on their hard 26 work to make this year’s mock trial competition a success; and

1 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the President of the Senate shall certify, and 2 the Senate Legislative Secretary shall attest to the adoption of this Resolution and the 3 Senate Clerk thereafter transmit certified copies to Mr. Galvin Deleon Guerrero, 4 Principal and teacher-coach, Mount Carmel High School; to Mr. Joe Taijeron and Mr. Ed 5 Buckingham, attorney-coaches; to Dr. David Borja, Commissioner of Education, Public 6 School System; to the Honorable Benigno R. Fitial, Governor of the Commonwealth of 7 the Northern ; the Honorable Arnold I. Palacios, Speaker of the House of 8 Representatives; and the Honorable Pedro A. Tenorio, CNMI Resident Representative to 9 the United States.
