Department The University of British Columbia Vancouver, Canada DE-6 (2/88) ii ABSTRACT: TONAL AND EXTRATONAL FUNCTIONS OF THE AUGMENTED TRIAD IN THE HARMONIC STRUCTURE OF WEBERN'S 'DEHMEL SONGS' The composing of the 'Dehmel Songs' marks a pivotal juncture both in Webern's oeuvre and in the history of music in general. The years that saw the birth of this cycle of five songs, 1906-8, comprise what is generally regarded as a period of transition, in the work of Schoenberg, Webern and Berg, from a 'late tonal' style of composition to an early 'atonal' style. In this study I approach the 'Dehmel Songs' from the perspective that its harmonic structure as a whole can be rendered intelligible in a theoretical way by combining a simple pitch-class-set analysis, which essentially involves graphing the pattern of recurrence of the 'augmented triad' as a motivic harmonic entity—a pattern which is in fact serial in nature-through the course of the unfolding harmonic progression, with a tonal interpretation that uses that pattern as a referential pitch-class skeleton. -

His vocal works include choral songs and vocal- instrumental works at a wide range of difficulty levels, from simple pedagogical songs to very advanced and technically challenging compositions. This study examines two of Eben‘s vocal-instrumental compositions. The oratorio Apologia Sokratus (1967) is a three-movement work; its libretto is based on Plato‘s Apology of Socrates. The ballet Curses and Blessings (1983) has a libretto compiled from numerous texts from the thirteenth to the twentieth centuries. The formal design of the ballet is unusual—a three-movement composition where the first is choral, the second is orchestral, and the third combines the previous two played simultaneously. Eben assembled the libretti for both compositions and they both address the contrasting sides of the human soul, evil and good, and the everlasting fight between them. This unity and contrast is the philosophical foundation for both compositions. -

Abstract: Bela Bartok is one of the most influential composers of the twentieth century whose works have been attended by many theorists. Among the most prominent musical theorists focusing on Bartok's works, Erno Lendvai, Jonas Karpati, Burno Nettl, and Milton Babbitt can be mentioned. These scholars have offered great theories by studying hidden, melodic and harmonic relations, and formal structures in the Bartok’s composition. The breadth of Bartok's works, diversity in using pitch organization, and lack of Bartok's personal views on analyzing his works, encouraged theorists to study his work more. The reason for focusing on Bartok in this research can be attributed to his prominent state as a composer in the twentieth century, as well as the way he employs folk melodies as the main component of composing structure. By focusing on tonal aspects, pitch organization, chord relations, and harmonic structures, this study deals with melodic lines and formal principles, and then dissects the theories and indicators in accordance with the mentioned theorists’ views. However, he has not provided any explanation with regard to his music. John Vinton's paper titled “Bartok in His Own Music” can be considered as the main source of reflection of Bartok's thoughts. -

Mathematical Perspectives on Music-theoretical Knowledge Thomas Noll 1 1 Dear Colleagues, it is a great pleasure to be invited to this excellent institute and Iʼm very glad that you are interested in the application of mathematics to music theory. My talk will focus on very basic music-theoretical concepts which are inspired by some properties of the traditional notation system. The links which I will draw to actual music are mostly concerned with the bass line. This is somewhat complementary to the focus of the joint project which Tom Fiore and I are currently working on. That one deals with voice leadings in harmonic progressions. The mathematical trajectory of my talk will take us from linear maps on Zn to linear maps on the free Z-module of rank 2 and turther on to associated automorphisms of the free group on two generators. All this is closely linked the the field of algebraic combinatorics on words. Before going into sophisticated aspects of this concept, let us start from a simplified perspective: Diatonic tone relations are those which can be notated with no use sharps or flats. There is a generic way to measure intervals, namely to count the height differences between two notes on the staff. -

The overtones of a specific pitch are generally referred to as the ‘harmonic series’, and the musical scale derived from this series is constructed around pure (or just) intervals. This system of just intonation is strikingly dissimilar to the 'twelve-tone equally-tempered division of the octave', which is based on the division of the octave into twelve equal intervals — the frequency ratio of each semitone (or tempered half-tone) being the twelfth root of 2. In Lou Harrison: Composing a World Leta E. Miller and Fredric Lieberman describes just intonation thus: “Pure intervals arise when the frequencies of the individual tones reflect the precise mathematical proportions that occur in the series: 3/2 for the fifth, 4/3 for the fourth, etc.” Intervals manifested naturally within the harmonic series are particularly favourable in just intonation, and certainly ones with “superparticular vibration ratios”, where the “numerator exceeds the denominator by one” such as the just perfect fifth (3/2), perfect fourth (4/3), major third (5/4) and minor third (6/5). -

PEEFACE. Modern music owes much of its beauty to the use of " doubtful chords;" that is, chords which belong equally to more than one key. Now, if an enharmonic scale were feasible, such chords could not exist, because mathematical correctness of ratio would make every chord strictly in tune in one key, instead of allowing it to be somewhat out of tune in several keys. The whole of our musical literature, from the works of Bach to those of Wagner, would there- fore be unavailable for instruments with an enharmonic scale. -

MUSIC 105 Prof. Dmitri Tymoczko Handout 1 (2010) What Makes Music Sound Good? Intuitively, some combinations of notes sound better than others. What’s the difference between good-sounding and bad-sounding combinations? While we cannot answer this question absolutely (since there’s no accounting for taste), we can identify five different properties that are common to a very wide range of styles, from early Medieval music to contemporary popular music. They are: 1. Conjunct melodic motion. Melodies tend to move by short distances from note to note. Large leaps sound inherently unmelodic. 2. Harmonic consistency. The chords in a passage of music, whatever they may be, tend to be structurally similar to one another. 3. Acoustic consonance. Some chords sound intrinsically good or pleasing. These are said to be consonant. 4. Scales. Over small spans of musical time (say 30 seconds or so), most musical styles tend to use just a few types of notes, between 5 to 8. 5. Centricity. Over moderate spans of musical time, one tonic note is heard as being more prominent than the others, appearing more frequently and serving as a goal of musical motion. These five properties make an enormous difference to our immediate experience; in fact, you can take completely random notes and make them sound reasonably musical, simply by forcing them to conform to these requirements. In this class, we’ll think about two different sorts of questions. First, how in principle can these various properties be combined? For example, if you want to combine the first two properties (short melodies and chords that sound similar) what sorts of chords should you use? And second, how have previous composers these different features? We will see that different styles (including Renaissance music, classical music, Romantic music, jazz and rock) all involve slightly different ways of deploying the same basic properties. -

A Bit About Intervals In order to study intervals, let's consider (as ever!) C Major scale. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Octave A couple of important points before we start: An interval is essentially the 'distance' between two notes. Intervals are always viewed from the point of view of their lowest note. Early music used exclusively what we call 'Perfect Intervals' as they were considered sacred. Perfect fourth Perfect fifth Perfect octave Perfect unison The remaining intervals in the major scale we call unsurprisingly 'Major Intervals' thus: Major second Major third Major sixth Major seventh If we flatten a major interval, the resulting interval we call a 'Minor Interval' thus: Minor second Minor third Minor sixth Minor seventh Copyright © Pete Cook October 2007 A Bit About Intervals Page 2 There are two more types of interval: Diminished intervals and Augmented intervals. You'll find that some of these intervals sound the same as some we've met already, but it is important to understand the sounds and 'spellings' of these intervals for reasons of 'correct musical grammar'. Of course, in reality you're only going to meet some of these in everyday musical life, the others reside pretty much in 'Theoryland'. UC Irvine UC Irvine Previously Published Works Title “The Impossible Charm of Messiaen’s Chronochromie” Permalink https://escholarship.org/uc/item/5xw0x3gc Author Bauer, AM Publication Date 2021-06-27 Peer reviewed eScholarship.org Powered by the California Digital Library University of California The Impossible Charm of Messiaen’s Chronochromie Messiaen Studies , Robert Sholl, editor (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2007) Amy Bauer Chronochromie occupies a seminal position in Messiaen’s œuvre, as both a culmination of the style oiseau from 1953 onwards, dominated by transcriptions of bird song, and as a template for the preoccupation with colour and rhythmic complexity that would mark his later music.1 At the behest of Heinrich Ströbel, Messiaen wrote Chronochromie on commission for the 1960 Donauschingen festival for full orchestra with no keyboards. It premiered to less than universal acclaim, as its riot of 21 simultaneous birdsongs in the penultimate movement was apparently more than the audience could bear.2 As the composer states in his extensive notes on the work, Chronochromie exploits the ‘power of impossibility’ latent in the colours of the full orchestra; the name stems from the integration of dense seven- and eight-note harmonies with a rhythmic scheme of symmetrical permutations based on 32 values in movements 2 and 4 (Strophes I and II).3 These symmetrical permutations, along with the singular harmonies most often called simply ‘colour’ chords in the scholarly literature,4 would appear later in Sept Haïkaï (1962), Couleurs de la Cité Céleste (1963), and Éclairs sur l’au delà… (1988-92). Yet it can be argued that, aside from Éclairs and St Francis’s ‘Sermon to the birds’ (Tableau Six of his opera St François d’Assise), Chronochromie represents the peak of composed and audible complexity in Messiaen’s music, for within it three compositional techniques are juxtaposed in their most arcane forms.
