  • Westmoreland in the Late Seventeenth Century by Colin Phillips
WESTMORLAND ABOUT 1670 BY COLIN PHILLIPS Topography and climate This volume prints four documents relating to the hearth tax in Westmorland1. It is important to set these documents in their geographical context. Westmorland, until 1974 was one of England’s ancient counties when it became part of Cumbria. The boundaries are shown on map 1.2 Celia Fiennes’s view in 1698 of ‘…Rich land in the bottoms, as one may call them considering the vast hills above them on all sides…’ was more positive than that of Daniel Defoe who, in 1724, considered Westmorland ‘A country eminent only for being the wildest, most barren and frightful of any that I have passed over in England, or even Wales it self. ’ It was a county of stark topographical contrasts, fringed by long and deep waters of the Lake District, bisected by mountains with high and wild fells. Communications were difficult: Helvellyn, Harter Fell, Shap Fell and the Langdale Fells prevented easy cross-county movement, although there were in the seventeenth century three routes identified with Kirkstone, Shap, and Grayrigg.3 Yet there were more fertile lowland areas and 1 TNA, Exchequer, lay subsidy rolls, E179/195/73, compiled for the Michaelmas 1670 collection, and including Kendal borough. The document was printed as extracts in W. Farrer, Records relating to the barony of Kendale, ed. J. F. Curwen (CWAAS, Record Series, 4 & 5 1923, 1924; reprinted 1998, 1999); and, without the exempt, in The later records relating to north Westmorland, ed. J. F. Curwen (CWAAS, Record Series, 8, 1932); WD/Ry, box 28, Ms R, pp.1-112, for Westmorland, dated 1674/5, and excluding Kendal borough and Kirkland (heavily edited in J.

  • Narratives of Performance: an Interdisciplinary Qualitative
Narratives of Performance: An Interdisciplinary Qualitative Ethnography Investigating the Storied Lives of Amateur and Professional Boxers Submitted by Paul Solomon Lennox, to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Drama, August 2012. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgment I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. Signature…………………………………………………………………... 1 Abstract This thesis identifies the shared pool of narrative resources, which constitute the public discourses and cultural meanings of the sport of boxing, in order to examine how individual boxers engage with them when performing their narrative identities. It is argued that the shared pool of narrative resources for boxing contain myths and legends that are taken for granted and yet heavily invested in by boxers and academics alike. This project explores how individual boxers engage with these resources in order to make sense of their own experiences and to formulate their narrative identity. The thesis asks how a thorough investigation of the shared narrative resources, and their use by boxers, provides new insights into what the sport of boxing means to boxers, and how shared resources are engaged with in order to perform idiosyncratic ontological narratives. This project makes a unique contribution, as it is the first project of its kind to fully consider the relationship between the individual accounts provided by boxers and the narrative resources available to them.

  • 2017 NF CONFERENCE from Process to Progress
END NF 2017 NF CONFERENCE From Process to Progress JUNE 10-13, 2017 | RENAISSANCE WASHINGTON, DC DOWNTOWN HOTEL Dear NF Conference Attendees: The Children’s Tumor Foundation strongly believes in collaboration—the kind that blossoms from meeting your peers, getting to know them, learning from them, and ultimately, connecting with them on a level that can only result from face-to-face interaction. Although the world of virtual communication—iPhones, Facebook, e-mail, Snapchat, Skype, Instagram (and much more)—has gained a lot of traction, I am an old-fashioned European who very much believes in authentic human connections. I am convinced that in order to build tangible, working collaborations and turn process into progress, trust is the ultimate key, and it is impossible to build trust with those you do not genuinely know. It is because of this principle that bringing those from the NF community together to mingle, share data, exchange knowledge, share projects and dreams, and simply enjoy one another’s company is very high on the Foundation’s priority list. This is what we aim to accomplish every year with the NF Conference, and this year in Washington, D.C. will be no exception! The Foundation is not alone in its gratitude for the annual NF Conference. At our Research Strategic Planning Retreat last fall, I was very happy to learn that a dynamic group of Board members and experts from both the NF community and other rare disease communities agreed that it should remain a top priority of the Foundation’s—and it will. Our conference is unique.
