Tityus antilla~us (Thorell, 1877), originally described from two juveniles from the "Antilles," is a junior synonymof T. crassimanus. Tityus crassin~nus appears to be most closely related to Tityus michelii Armas,from Puerto Rico. Htyus obtusus (Karsch, 1879), from Puerto Rico, has been confused with, and erroneously suspected of be/rig a junior synonymof T. crasgmaT:us. INTRODUCTION Thoreil (1877) describedsix species in the genusIsometrus Hemprich and Ehrenberg, four of them from the NewWorld. Isometrus fuscus Thorell, 1877, from Argentina was subsequentlydesignated the type species of the genusZabius Thorell, 1894. Isometrus stigmurusThorell, 1877, fromBrasil wastransferred to Tit)~s C. L. Karsch,where it is still considereda valid species (Louren~o1981). Isometruscrassimanus Thorell, 1877, fromMexico was also transferred to ~’tyus, whereit has remainedenigmatic (Hoffmann 1932) primarily because the genus ~tyus is otherwise unknownnorth of Costa Rica in either Central or North America(Pocock 1902, Lourenfoand Franckein press). Last, Isometrusantillanus Thorell, 1877, from "America(India Occidentalis)... Lourenço (with 32 figures) Abstract For almost a century, Scorpio maurus L., 1758 (Scorpiones, Scorpionidae) has been considered to be no more than a widespread and presumably highly polymorphic species. Past classifications by Birula and Vachon have restricted the status of different populations to subspecific level. In the present paper, and in the light of new evidence, several African populations are now raised to the rank of species. One of these, Scorpio occidentalis Werner, 1936, is redescribed and a neotype proposed to stabilise the taxonomy of the group. A new species is also described from the savannah areas of Cameroon. This is the second to be recorded from regions outside the Sahara desert zone. Keywords: Scorpiones, Scorpionidae, Scorpio, new rank, new species, Africa, Cameroon. Introduction The genus Scorpio was created by Linnaeus in 1758 (in part), and has Scorpio maurus Linnaeus, 1758 as its type species, defined by subsequent designation (Karsch 1879; see also Fet 2000). -

Specific locality records are presented to define the distributions of the scorpions Centruroides vittatus (Say) and C. hentzi (Banks) in North America. The former occurs in the Central Plains as far north a s Thayer County, Nebraska ; the Rio Grande and Sangre de Cristo Mountains form the western distributiona l boundary, and the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers essentially do likewise on the east . Centruroides vittatus occurs just across the latter watercourses in Holt County, Missouri, and Monroe and Randolph counties, Illinois , range extensions that probably can be attributed to rafting or natural alterations in the rivers' courses . Other occurrences east of the Mississippi River, in northern Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi an d North Carolina, are associated with cities and are mostly far outside what we consider the natural range ; such records are regarded as human introductions . One of these apparently represents a viable reproducing population in Rutherford County, Tennessee. Likewise, records far west of the Rio Grande, in Arizona and California, ar e interpreted as introductions . Centruroides vittatus traverses the Rio Grande south of Texas and occurs in Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, and Tamaulipas, Mexico. Centruroides hentzi, previously known only from Florida in the United States, occurs in Mobile and Baldwin counties, Alabama, and in the southern tier o f counties in Georgia. -

Algérie ------------------------------------------------------------ Résumé : Le Souf est situé au Sud- Est de l’Algérie, aux confins septentrionaux du Grand Erg Oriental, entre les 33° et 34° de latitude Nord, et les 6° et 8° de longitude Est, touchant les frontières tunisienne et libyenne. Cette immense étendue sablonneuse abrite plusieurs faunes désertiques hautement diversifiées. Une étude originale sur la faune scorpionique dans cette région, nous a permis d’inventorier et identifier en totalité huit (08) espèces des scorpions, réparties d’une manière typique selon les différents biotopes naturels (Erg et reg) et biotopes anthropiques (Palmeraies ou oasis et milieux urbains). Une analyse factorielle des correspondances appliquées aux espèces trouvées nous a révélé que l’ Androctonus autralis est l’espèce omniprésente dans tous les biotopes et l’unique espèce qui fréquente les milieux urbains, Androctonus amoreuxi en deuxième place avec une large répartition qui fréquente la majorité des biotopes sauf le milieu urbain. -

Euscorpius is an expedient and viable medium for the publication of serious papers in scorpiology, including (but not limited to): systematics, evolution, ecology, biogeography, and general biology of scorpions. Review papers, descriptions of new taxa, faunistic surveys, lists of museum collections, and book reviews are welcome. Derivatio Nominis The name Euscorpius Thorell, 1876 refers to the most common genus of scorpions in the Mediterranean region and southern Europe (family Euscorpiidae). The International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN, 4th Edition, 1999) does not accept online texts as published work (Article 9.8); however, it accepts CD-ROM publications (Article 8). " In the growth of each science, not only is correct observation needful for the formation of true theory, but true theory is needful as a preliminary to correct observation."—H. SFENCEB. 2 The " Annelid theory," after fifteen years of dexterous modelling, is now as far as ever either from fitting the facts of Vertebrate structure, or from shedding any direct light on the great problem of the origin of Vertebrates. It certainly is not without significance that, of all those who with willing eyes and minds have grappled with the Annelid theory, not one has discovered a distinctively Annelid feature in Vertebrates : mesoblastic somites, nephridia, segmental appendages, and seg- mental sense-organs are found in nearly all segmented animals. 1 I include in the Arachnida the Spiders, Scorpions, Linvulus, Trilobites, and Merostomata. 2 Most of my observations on Acdlius, Scorpio, and Limulus were made in the Lake Laboratory, Milwaukee, Wis. I am greatly indebted to the founder of that institution, Mr. E. P. Allis, for generously placing at my disposal the excellent facilities for research which his laboratory affords. As a full description of my observations could not be published without considerable delay, it seemed advisable to present my theoretical conclusions first, at the same time giving a short account of those facts bearing directly on the subject-matter. A few simple diagrams have been introduced to make the text more intelligible. -

In this study, DNA sequence diversity of the mitochondrial (mt) cytochrome oxidase 1 (CO1) gene was investigated in Scorpio maurus specimens from across southeastern Turkey. Nucleotide sequences included 508 conserved sites and 126 variable sites, and the mean nucleotide variation within species was 7.9%. Intraspecific pairwise divergences ranged from 0.5% to 10.7%. Phylogenetic analysis indicated high divergence among specimens. This study is the first mtDNA sequence analysis for Turkish scorpions. Morphology, ecology and distribution of Isometrus maculatus (DeGeer 1778) in Cuba (Scorpiones: Buthidae) Abstract: The taxonomy and known geographical distribution of the Cuban populations of Isometrus maculatus (DeGeer, 1778) are updated. Also, the morphological variability (body size and proportions, coloration, number of pectinal teeth and primary rows of granules on pedipalp fingers) are herein studied and data are presented on the ecology of this scorpion, which has been accidentally introduced to and has become naturalized in Cuba. Introducción Sin ningún tipo de dudas, la especie de escorpión más am- rarlo con los sintipos de I. e. quinquefasciatus se percató de pliamente distribuida es Isometrus maculatus (DeGeer, su coespecificidad con I. maculatus, estableció formalmente 1778): según las dos compilaciones más recientes (Fet & dicha sinonimia y dedujo que su presencia en Cuba se debía Lowe, 2000; Kovařík, 2003) ha sido capturada en unos 70 atribuir a una introducción accidental debido al comercio.
