I remember how my father would stand in front of his floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall bookshelves full of thousands of books and tell me that he had read every single book there. I wanted to become like him (I still do), so I started reading. My first exposure to Spanish literature came in the third year of my undergraduate studies, when I took an introductory course in Hispanic literature with Fred de Rosset, who became a major inspiration for me (thank you, Fred). My interest in Spanish literature immediately began to grow. Before that year, I was sure that I wanted to become a professor, but after gaining more knowledge about Spanish language, literature and culture, I was convinced that I wanted to become a professor of Spanish. My biggest support throughout my career has been my family. Thank you, father, for instilling in me the love for literature at a very young age, for being my first English teacher, for suggesting me to learn Spanish, and for being so supportive of me at all instances. Thank you, mother, for your immense love, for cheering for me during the grueling years of graduate school, and for your daily motivation. Thank you, Lilit, for being my psychological therapist throughout all these years. Although younger than me, you have always amazed me with your maturity level and wisdom. iv I also want to thank all the people who have been of enormous support here at Purdue. I feel extremely lucky to have been a part of the School of Languages and Cultures. I want to thank all the faculty and staff, my coordinators and friends.
