Graeme Turner SURRENDERING THE SPACE Convergence culture, Cultural Studies and the curriculum This essay tests the claims made by some versions of convergence culture to be the next step forward for Cultural Studies. It does this by examining the teaching programmes that have been generated by various formations of convergence culture: programmes in new media studies, creative industries and digital media studies. The results of this examination are cause for concern: most of these programmes appear to have surrendered the space won for Cultural Studies in the university curriculum in favour of an instrumentalist focus on the training, rather than the education, of personnel to work in the emerging media industries. The essay argues therefore that while such developments may represent themselves as emerging from within Cultural Studies, in practice they have turned out to have very little to do with Cultural Studies at all. Keywords teaching Cultural Studies; curriculum; new media studies; creative industries; digital media studies Introduction Reservations about the hype around what we have come to call convergence culture are not new. Back in 2003, media historian Jeffery Sconce, bouncing off an account of a pre-modern example of popular hype, ‘tulipmania’,1 had this to say about the early warning signs from what was then called ‘digital culture’: I think most of us would be hard-pressed to think of a discipline in which more pages have been printed about things that haven’t happened yet (and may never) and phenomena that in the long run are simply not very important (Jennicam, anyone?). Of course, only an idiot would claim that digital media are not worthy of analysis, an assertion that would sadly replicate the hostility towards film and television studies encountered in the last century. -

John Sendy Socialism and the ALP Left THE FEDERAL TAKE-OVER of the Victorian Labor Party, inspired by rightwing policies, ruling class desires and the ambi tions of attaining electoral victory at any cost, has proved a grand failure, irrespective of what occurs in the next weeks. The interventionists had a completely unreal estimate of the situation in Victoria and have proved quite unequal to the job undertaken. They in no way realised the depth of support for Hartley, Hogg and their colleagues. Estimating that Hartley, Hogg & Co. would have only a handful of supporters faced with strong-arm tactics, they to a large degree were paralysed by the strength and full-blooded nature of the opposition and defiance which they confronted from a membership sickened by the traditional parliamentary antics of a Whitlam and the hare brained, opportunist, power-game manoeuvrings of a Cameron. The idea of reforming the ALP to enhance its 1972 electoral prospects by eliminating “the madmen of Victoria” in exchange for some curbing of the rightwing dominance in NSW was swal lowed readily by sundry opportunistic, unprincipled “left wingers" in NSW and Victoria obsessed with positions and “power” and with achieving the “advance” of electing a Labor Government under Whitlam. The “Mad Hatters tea party” of Broken Hill was fol lowed by the circus-style orgy of the Travel Lodge Motel in the John Sendy is Victorian Secretary of the Communist Party. VOLUME V ❖ ISSUE 2: UQ CENTENARY ❖ 2011 ❖ 75–86 An interdisciplinary journal for the study of history, philosophy, religion, and classics ‘Up the new channels’ STUDENT ACTIVI S M IN BRI sba NE DURING AU S TR A LI A ’S SIXTIE S Jon Piccini This paper seeks to locate the development of Brisbane’s New Left student movement within a growing body of transna- tional studies on ‘the sixties.’ In particular, it focuses on the interrelation between global issues such as the Vietnam War and the local realities of Queensland under the supposedly oppressive and philistine Country-Liberal government, and the role this played in cultivating a radical practice during the sixties and seventies. Appropriations of urban space, both on and off-campus, were vital to youth activists fashioning oppositional identities within the parameters of this transnational mediation. Foco Club, headquartered in what was then Trades Hall, provided a place for youth entertainment and political involvement on an otherwise culturally-sterile Sunday night, while students’ continued attempts to redefine The University of Queensland as a space for struggle, saw a variety of interlinked contestations with the state, administration and other, less radical, students. An important, if overlooked, period of Brisbane’s youth history is thus contextualised, placing the city firmly within a developing narrative of the transnational sixties. Oh yes, we all know that young people are hedonistic and naive, and perpetually dissatisfied. But the joke is that the dissatisfaction is starting to be articulated.1 n 1970, several dozen Brisbane activists collectively published a wide-ranging assault on the capitalist Iuniversity, using as a case study their base at The University of Queensland. -

It is written from the per spective of one who joined the Communist Movement 1920-1955 Party of Australia because it seemed the only party 'committed to the struggle for socialism and against fascism' and who left it because Robin Gollan this 'no longer seemed the case'. British Cultural Studies British Cultural Studies is a comprehensive introduction to the British tradition of cultural studies. Museum & Society, 11(3) 219 Arcadian modernism and national identity: The ‘Murdoch press’ and the 1939 Australian Herald ‘Exhibition of French and British Contemporary Art’ Janice Baker* Abstract The 1939 Australian ‘Herald’ Exhibition of French and British Contemporary Art is said not only to have resonated ‘in the memories of those who saw it’ but to have formed ‘the experience even of many who did not’ (Chanin & Miller 2005: 1). Under the patronage of Sir Keith Murdoch, entrepreneur and managing director of the Melbourne ‘Herald’ newspaper, and curated by the Herald’s art critic Basil Burdett, the exhibition attracted large and enthusiastic audiences. Remaining in Australia for the duration of the War, the exhibition of over 200 European paintings and sculpture, received extensive promotion and coverage in the ‘Murdoch press’. Resonating with an Australian middle-class at a time of uncertainty about national identity, this essay explores the exhibition as an ‘Arcadian’ representation of the modern with which the population could identify. The exhibition aligned a desire to be associated with the modern with a restoration of the nation’s European heritage. In its restoration of this continuity, the Herald exhibition affected an antiquarianism that we can explore, drawing on Friedrich Nietzsche’s insights into the use of traditional history. Graeme Davison (2000: 11) observes that using this form of ‘heroic’ tradition to inspire Australian national identity represents a monumental formation of the past that is ‘the standard form of history in new nations’. -
A New Britannia
Mary Murnane A New Britannia ONE OF THE ASSUMPTIONS pervading the study of Australian history is that the working class and their political correlate the Labor Party were the bearers of what is distinctively Australian. It is perhaps for this reason the history of the Labor Movement is a favorite field of study for Australian historians. A New Britannia is essentially a history of the Labor Movement — but with a difference. It is not Humphrey McQueen’s primary intention to argue the significance of the strikes of the 1890’s; to date with accuracy Labor’s intention to enter politics; or to dissect the more notorious strikes of the twentieth century. McQueen refers to these other peaks in the history of the Labor Movement and sometimes records a deviant interpretation. But the central impulse of the book is to locate the Labor Movement in the materialistic, acquisitive perspectives of Australian society as a whole. McQueen accords more importance to racism as a component of Australian nationalism than any historian heretofore. It is, he says, “the most important single component of Australian nat ionalism”. Racism had an economic origin — the fear that the labor markets wouldl be flooded with cheap colored labor. McQueen sees racism as more than the fear of the Australian worker that he would lose his bargaining power vis a vis his employer — scarcity of labor. He refers to a notion of “pure racism” which was born on the goldfields of the 1850’s. Diggers blamed bad luck on the Chinese, anti-Chinese riots occurred, the most well known being at Lambing Flat in 1861. -

Vol.11 (2004),3 Vol.11 31 Introduction: Local Rocks and Global Hard Places The question of whether there is an Australian critical tradition in communica- tions research that is worth knowing about is one that has certainly engaged schol- ars in Australia. Graeme Turner (1992) has argued that critical researchers in Aus- tralia face a dilemma characteristic of the condition of being post-colonial, of facing a double bind between what he terms the rock of cultural nationalism and the hard place of global circuits of cultural production and distribution. The former is in danger of appearing backward-looking and exclusionary to its critics, while the latter choice to align ones work within dominant metropolitan discourses, and accepting a location within global circuits of knowledge production and distri- bution, may be inappropriate to the political, economic and cultural circumstances faced in ones own national environment.
