The case studies cover a six-month period in 1999 and draw on all media over that period. The three case studies are: the violence in East TImor at the time ofthe 1999 independence ballot, the imprisonment in Yugoslavia of Prall and Wallace, two employees of CARE Australia, and the floods in Mozambique. While the three case studies collectively exhibit many ofthe standard characteristics ofmedia coverage ofhumanitarian issues, individually they dif fer significantly in the scale andorientation ofcoverage. Wesug gest that a significantfactor in these differences was the relation ship between the sources for the stories and the journalists, which in turn depended on other factors. We review the adequa cy of the Hall and Ericson positions on the source-journalist relationship in explaining these differences, and suggest that a field analysis derivedfrom Bourdieu is helpful in explaining the involvement ofsources from the political, economic and military fields, which in turn impacted on the relationship ofthe media to the stories. Morrison Specialist in International Trade and Finance Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Trade Division Congressional Research Service ˜ The Library of Congress China-Southeast Asia Relations: Trends, Issues, and Implications for the United States Summary Southeast Asia has been considered by some to be a region of relatively low priority in U.S. foreign and security policy. The war against terror has changed that and brought renewed U.S. attention to Southeast Asia, especially to countries afflicted by Islamic radicalism. To some, this renewed focus, driven by the war against terror, has come at the expense of attention to other key regional issues such as China’s rapidly expanding engagement with the region. Some fear that rising Chinese influence in Southeast Asia has come at the expense of U.S. ties with the region, while others view Beijing’s increasing regional influence as largely a natural consequence of China’s economic dynamism. China’s developing relationship with Southeast Asia is undergoing a significant shift. This will likely have implications for United States’ interests in the region. While the United States has been focused on Iraq and Afghanistan, China has been evolving its external engagement with its neighbors, particularly in Southeast Asia. In the 1990s, China was perceived as a threat to its Southeast Asian neighbors in part due to its conflicting territorial claims over the South China Sea and past support of communist insurgency. -

Contributors Robert Ayson is Professor of Strategic Studies and directs the Centre for Strategic Studies: New Zealand. He has held academic positions with The Australian National University, Massey University and the University of Waikato, and official positions in Wellington with the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Select Committee and the External (now National) Assessments Bureau. He has written books on two of the twentieth century's leading thinkers in strategic studies and international relations, Hedley Bull and Thomas Schelling, and is a frequent media commentator on Asia-Pacific security, nuclear issues and New Zealand and Australian defence policy. Robert is also Honorary Professor at the New Zealand Defence Force Command and Staff College. Desmond Ball is Emeritus Professor at The Australian National University’s Strategic and Defence Studies Centre having been Head of the Centre from 1984 to 1991. Professor Ball is the author of more than 40 books or monographs on technical intelligence subjects, nuclear strategy, Australian defence, and security in the Asia-Pacific region. Graeme Turner SURRENDERING THE SPACE Convergence culture, Cultural Studies and the curriculum This essay tests the claims made by some versions of convergence culture to be the next step forward for Cultural Studies. It does this by examining the teaching programmes that have been generated by various formations of convergence culture: programmes in new media studies, creative industries and digital media studies. The results of this examination are cause for concern: most of these programmes appear to have surrendered the space won for Cultural Studies in the university curriculum in favour of an instrumentalist focus on the training, rather than the education, of personnel to work in the emerging media industries. The essay argues therefore that while such developments may represent themselves as emerging from within Cultural Studies, in practice they have turned out to have very little to do with Cultural Studies at all. Keywords teaching Cultural Studies; curriculum; new media studies; creative industries; digital media studies Introduction Reservations about the hype around what we have come to call convergence culture are not new. Back in 2003, media historian Jeffery Sconce, bouncing off an account of a pre-modern example of popular hype, ‘tulipmania’,1 had this to say about the early warning signs from what was then called ‘digital culture’: I think most of us would be hard-pressed to think of a discipline in which more pages have been printed about things that haven’t happened yet (and may never) and phenomena that in the long run are simply not very important (Jennicam, anyone?). Of course, only an idiot would claim that digital media are not worthy of analysis, an assertion that would sadly replicate the hostility towards film and television studies encountered in the last century. -

PAT HOFFIE: Skatebowl in a Gallery, Ipswich essay by Julianne Schultz MONA – the Museum of Old and New Art – is a glamorous curiosity box on the banks of the Derwent River at Glenorchy in working class Hobart. In just a few years it has been the catalyst of and economic and social transformation – crystallising the cultural essence of early twenty-first century Tasmania, and changing notions of productive work. In the process it has put the state on the global tourism agenda, providing opportunities for artists, craftspeople, performers and thinkers to find like minded souls and develop new businesses and to stretch the horizons and possibilities for countless others. Similar interventions are occurring around the world, as artists, entrepreneurs, local administrators and communities stretch the boundaries of engagement, creativity and art. Skatebowl in a Gallery, Ipswich is the most recent move into this space by the important Brisbane artist, Pat Hoffie. That this work, titled Immaterial Labour: Skatebowl Prounspace has found a home at the Ipswich Art Gallery is itself important – it is the juxtapostion of works like this in unexpected places, and with people who may not routinely visit a gallery, that adds to their power and impact. MONA is a great example. It is itself arguably as much a work of art – of genius – as some of the works assembled in its subterranean galleries and inspiring spaces. It is a product of vision and skill of one man, David Walsh, executed with unstinting precision using the proceeds of a form of work (gambling), which is more often thought of as play. -

The tabloid Indy exceeded expectations when it boosted overall sales of the Independent by 30,000 on its first day. It sold 42,000 copies of an 80,000 print run while sales of the broadsheet dipped 12,000. Queensland Newspapers managing director Jerry Harris believes the broadsheet/tabloid sister act could give the company the best of both worlds and act as a disincentive to Fairfax ambitions in the north. It could assist the company in some of the lower-circulation areas for the Courier-Mail, such as Brisbane’s south-west and regional Queensland (David Nason, ‘Independent’s tabloid turnaround gets Brisbane broadsheet thinking’, Australian, Media liftout, 30 October 2003, p.3). -

The Public Humanities 10-11-12 November 2016 Hosted by the ARC Centre for the History of Emotions, the ACHRC, and Flinders University in Adelaide, South Australia The ACHRC conference on the Public Humanities focuses on a core aspect of humanities research that is particularly germane to research centres in universities and collecting institutions: the integral role of engagement with publics. This is really how the impact of our sector needs to be understood: in the long and dynamic threads of dialogue between researchers and publics on issues such as justice, creativity, decolonization, and heritage. The capacity of the humanities to deal with qualitative emotion as well as the quantitative facts of history and culture is crucial here. Any understanding of a cultures past, present, and future requires an articulation of feelings as well as of facts. Our aim is to bring together speakers with practical experience of programs that work so that our discussions are grounded in the pragmatics of public humanities. In Australia and New Zealand, government-led discussions of innovation and impact are mired in metrics that traduce the real public values of the sciences almost as completely as they ignore the HASS disciplines as a whole. We know about public value – its impact over time and in the lives of individuals – so this conference will be an opportunity build our case as a sector. At the beginning our naiviety led us to believe that reports miraculously land in the ‘in’ file, photos are taken by themselves and the final magazine arrives in all its splendour out of thin air. After two weeks, this illusory belief was shattered, thanks to Mrs. Shepherd’s constant reminders and imposed deadlines, the Collegian Committee set about performing its actual task. People owning reports were hounded and harassed (by the secret Collegian Force) photography sessions were ruled with an iron fist and the school body was subjected to the revolutionary 'A-:-- torture, technique of Collegian Committee advertising (thanks Mrs. Pyett for the loan of your sunnies). Through these trials and tribulations the Collegian Committee has brought about several changes as you will no doubt notice. We hope that these alterations improve the overall effect of the 1991 Collegian. Finally as the year draws to an end, I would like to thank Mrs. Shepherd plus Mr. Thompson for their invaluable help and the entire Collegian Committee for their tireless work. I am sure that they’d all agree that working on the Collegian was a rewarding and enjoyable experience. -
