Postcon Report

Inside: Letter from the Chairman

It’s time to wrap up another , and I am thrilled to say it was an excellent Art Show Report 2 one! Nothing feels better than ending my two years as chair on a high note. As much as I would like to take the credit for Norwescon 37’s success, I know that it Programming Report 2 rests squarely on my fabulous concom and volunteers. I can’t thank them enough, as Norwescon would be nothing without such a dedicated team. They make things Art Show Awards 3 run smoothly and make the con a true pleasure to attend. This brings us full circle because without our attendees, we couldn’t produce the Norwescon we have come Registration Report 3 to know and love, so many thanks to all those that attended NWC 37. It is for you Business Report 4 that we do what we do. Norwescon wouldn’t be the con it is without our exemplary Guests of Honor, Pros, Masquerade Awards 6 and P.K. Dick Nominees. They pack the punch in our panels and provide hours and hours of entertainment and education to the con. I want to send out a heartfelt Registration Report 8 thank you to all of them.

As the chairman, I worked the closest with the concom under my department, and I would like to recognize their hard work. Ali Grieve did an amazing job putting to- gether the Guest of Honor Banquet. The number of fabulous prizes she had was unbelievable. Her food choices were spot on as usual. Phillip Buff was in charge of all things involving charities and donations. Anyone who went to the charity auction on Sunday saw what an amazing job he did. He helped Norwescon provide North- west Harvest with many meals for the hungry. Pat and Doug Booze served as our EMP liaisons, strengthening our relationship with them. Doug Booze also did a great job running the election for Norwescon 38. Shannon Hillinger was my info manager and kept everyone informed and Google organized. Michael Citrak was Norwescon historian and a generous t-shirt provider. Last, but not least, is William Sadorus, who handled the P.K. Dick awards and was my vice chair. He is suave in a suit, handing out awards and indispensable as my vice chair. I couldn’t have done this without him. I couldn’t have done this without any of them. Thank you all for the great jobs you did.

One of the honors of being the chairman is the ability to give out Norwescon Life- time Memberships. I gave two out this year to two people that I couldn’t imagine having to run a Norwescon without, Joshua Keegan and Brad Nelson. Congratula- tions guys, and thanks for all the years of hard work!

Art Show Report

We hope that you all had a chance to come by the art show and possibly take some art home with you. We had a great time this year, and we hope that you did, too.

Some of our highlights from this year’s show included introducing the Artist Gallery Pages on our website and selling CDs from attending musicians in the print shop. We are also proud to say that we had three former Artist Guests of Honor, Richard Hescox, , and , show with us this year. This was the second year for our new art show computer program, which we more fully integrated into the show and creat- ed a better experience for everyone.

We would like to thank our hard working staff for everything they did to make this a successful year; we could not have done any of this without them. We would like to announce that our Art Show Apprentice Award went to Kelley O'Hanlon for giving us her wholehearted support in her first year with us. We also want to thank the 85 wonderful artists for participating, with 2,345 pieces of art entered into this year’s show. Our Costume Guest of Honor, Anima!X, had a wonderful display highlighting her amazing costumes, which we hope you all had a chance to check out.

And, of course, we would like to thank our Artist Guest of Honor, Robert Gould. He was wonderful to our membership and other artists, and it was such a pleasure to work with him. His incredible art was the true centerpiece of the show.

We hope to see you all again next year.

Programming Report

It was an honor to serve a second term as Programming Director during Norwescon 37, a year that may just have broken a record—with a massive 465.5 hours of panels, presentations, and readings, 225 hours of spe- cial events, and 21 hours of convention-sponsored socials, we had a grand total of 711.5 hours of content. We even had panels that were standing room only on Thursday afternoon and Sunday morning. How great is that?

Among the highlights: and his fellow Drones shared the humor of P.G. Wodehouse. Mi- chael, Robert Gould, and John Picacio shared their unique takes on the art of Elric (and John taught us all how to play the Mexican bingo game of Loteria). Catherine Plesko used her Ph.D. in BOOM! to inform us all about planetary impacts and massive cosmic explosions. Seanan McGuire read to us, sang to us, traded rib- bons with us, and talked to us about feminism in fandom. Anima!X and her astounding costumes surrounded us all in a cheerful cloud of glitter. Last but not least, 47North showed us how a local e-commerce company can influence the next generation of the publishing industry.

All in all, it was a fabulous year, and the Programming department is looking forward to Norwescon 38! Page 3

Letter from the Chairman continued

It was an honor to be voted in as the chairman for NWC 37 and work with my executive team, concom, and volunteers. NWC 37 was everything it should be and more thanks to everyone who was involved from the hotel staff, to the con- com, to the volunteers, to the pros, to the guests, and to the attendees. Thank you all for supporting Norwescon.

Business Report

Overall, Norwescon had a good year in 2014. Our membership revenue was down slightly from the previous year, but the departments did a good job of keeping expenses down. We had few capital expenses, so we ended up with a surplus. This surplus goes into our reserves, to be used in years where we run a loss.

The report below is organized as follows. First, you will see the big picture overview of net income, net ex- penses, and then expenditures by department. Please note, expenditures by department do not directly add up to the net expenses, because we have some expenses that are not under the departments. Second, you will see a report that attempts to break things out into different categories across departments, but in a group- ing that might more accurately reflect how you think about the money we spend at the convention. Included in this chart is a listing of the budget codes that comprise each grouping, so that you can get a sense of how some of the spending crosses departments.

A couple of numbers in the departmental breakouts may catch your eye. The business department is over- spent, because of a change in accounting processes. In the past, sales tax from the art show and credit card processing fees have been listed as part of total expenses, but not attributed to a department. This year, we counted them as business department expenses and will include them in the budget for NWC 38.

Meanwhile, Personnel had an unexpectedly high food expenses. This is partly because we bought more food than planned and partly because some of the food purchased was actually for the Green Room, which should have been charged to Programming. The business and personnel departments are collaborating to improve the buying process for NWC 38.

Our capital expenses this year mostly involved computer network gear, to build our own network independent of the hotel. We also replaced a couple of broken or obsolete laptops.
