Fossil stems assigned to the Cycadales are, however, rare and few descriptions of them exist. Here, a new genus of cycad stem, Wintucycas gen. nov., is described on the basis of specimens found in the Allen Formation (Upper Cretaceous) at the Salitral Ojo de Agua locality, Río Negro Province, Argentina. The most remarkable features of Wintucyas are: a columnar stem with persistent leaf bases, absence of cataphylls, a wide pith, medullary vascular bundles, mucilage canals and idioblasts; a polyxylic vascular cylinder; inverted xylem; and manoxylic wood. The new genus was included in a phylogenetic analysis and its relationships with fossil and extant genera of Cycadales were examined. In the resulting phylogenetic hypothesis, Wintucycas is circumscribed to subfamily Encephalartoideae, supporting the existence of a greater diversity of this group in South America during the Cretaceous. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 170, 436–458. In fossil plant impressions organic material is not preserved and cuticular data is commonly believed to be missing. This work describes a redefined version of the silicone cast technique for SEM examination known since almost 40 years, but unfortunately rarely used in routine palaeobotanical studies. The use of silicone (vinylpolysiloxane) instead latex casts offers significant advantages such as easier handling, higher reproduction of surface details, and elimination of electrostatic charge accumulation. The results indicate that silicone represents an improvement over latex. With this technique excellent results can be achieved, possibly making visible several plant surface structures, including epidermal cells, stomata, papillae, trichomes and striations on the rachis. Moreover, this technique demonstrates that impression fossils can provide similar useful data like those seen in compressed fossils. The effectiveness of this technique is demonstrated with several examples of fossil plants from the Triassic Madygen Lagerstätte. The application of this simple, non-destructive and extremely effective technique provides significant biological information on the cuticular and epidermal features in fossil plant impressions despite the absence of cuticles, to resolve taxonomic problems as well as to infer diverse ecological adaptations. (Zamiaceae, Cycadales) with recognition of a new species from the late Eocene of Panama – evolution and biogeographic inferences Boglárka ErdEi, MichaEl calonjE, austin hEndy & nicolas Espinosa Modern Zamia L. is the second largest genus among cycads, however reliably identified fossil occurrences of the genus have so far been missing. Previously, fossil “Zamia” species were established in large numbers on the basis of macromorphological similarity of foliage fragments to living Zamia species. However, a reinvestigation of specimens assigned formerly to Zamia and the relevant literature provided no clear-cut evidence for their assignment to this genus. We investigated a newly recovered fossil specimen from marine sediments of the Gatuncillo Formation, near Buena Vista, Colon Province, Central Panama. It represents the first unequivocal fossil record of the genus confirmed by epidermal as well as macromorphological characters and it is described as Zamia nelliae Erdei & Calonje sp. nov. Foraminiferal and nannoplankton biostratigraphy of the locality indicates a late Eocene to earliest Oligocene age. Morphometric comparison of epidermal features of Z. nelliae with those of modern Zamia species suggests similarity with those of the Caribbean Zamia clade. The fossil record of Zamia from Panama implies that the genus appeared by the end of the Eocene or earliest Oligocene in the Central American–Caribbean region, however, the origin of the genus is still unresolved. The record of Z. nelliae may challenge former concepts on the evolution of Zamia and raises an “intermediate” hypothesis on its origin in the Central American–Caribbean region and its subsequent dispersal south- and northwards.

A comparative investigation has been made of the ultrastructure of the cuticular membrane recovered from healthy and fungal-infected leaves of Tbinnfeldia indica Feistmantel, a fossil taxon to understand lhe nature of changes brought about in the cuticular membrane by the fungi. In general, the structural configuration of both the cuticular membranes is similar. In the infected leaf, precursors of cutin acc.;::ions are irregularly present at the sub-cuticular surface. These accrelions are interpreted as possible results of breakdown of the cutin due to the secretion of an enzyme by the fungi infecting the leaf. It thus seems that the fungi, besides edaphic factors, do playa role in the break-down of the cutin and thus constrain the preservation of the cuticular membranes. Angel Gallardo 470 (1405) Buenos Aires, Argentina Received 12 July 2004; accepted in revised form 16 February 2005 Available online 16 September 2005 Abstract Two new species of cycadalean leaves belonging to Mesosingeria and Ticoa are described using conventional light and electron microscopy techniques (LM, SEM and TEM). The cuticles were found in the Anfiteatro de Tico´Formation, Baquero´Group (Early Aptian) of Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. Cycadalean leaves in this formation are represented by six genera: Almargemia Florin, Mesodescolea Archangelsky, Mesosingeria Archangelsky, Pseudoctenis Seward, Sueria Mene´ndez and Ticoa Archangelsky. Mesosingeria oblonga sp. nov. and Ticoa lanceolata sp. nov. extend the list of species represented. Comparison of all described cycadalean species found in this unit indicates that species are segregated by broad differences in the anatomy of trichomes, storage cells, stomata and epistomatal chamber protections, together with their density and distribution. Tomescu Premise of research. Numerous leaf remains of pteridosperms occur at a new locality of the Early Jurassic Cañadón Asfalto Formation, in Patagonia, Argentina. Fossils consist of adpressions with superb cuticular preservation and are herein assigned to Lepidopteris (Peltaspermaceae). Methodology. Fossils were studied using normal light, epifluorescence, and scanning electron microscopy. The cuticles of 25 specimens were chemically prepared following standard methods. The remains were de- scribed in detail and compared with other pteridosperm genera and Lepidopteris species. Pivotal results. We erect Lepidopteris scassoi sp. nov. Elgorriaga, Escapa et Cúneo, based on its novel combination of characters. Among other features, L. scassoi has a bipinnate-tripinnatifid architecture, smooth rachis, 1–3 pairs of intercalary pinnules, and entire to deeply lobed pinnules with pinnate venation. Fronds are amphistomatic with a 0.5–0.7∶1 adaxial to abaxial ratio; stomata occur scattered on rachides and pinnules and have a ring of usually seven subsidiary cells with papillae oriented toward the stomatal pit; and the guard cells are sunken. A single solid papilla is usually present on epidermal cells of pinnules and pinnae.

A new lithostratigraphic scheme has been proposed for the previous Baqueró Formation (Santa Cruz Province, Argentina), which is now considered to be a Group including three formations: Anfiteatro de Ticó the oldest, Bajo Tigre the middle and Punta del Barco the youngest. The distribution of plant fos- sils at severallocalities where these formations occur has shown that there are two different plant assem- blages that are consistently present over a wide area. A detailed study of the distribution of all plant species known to be present in the Baqueró Group led to define two biozones, viz. Ptilophyllum (lower) and Gleichenites (upper). The main differences concern the disappearance of all Bennettites and most Cycads and Ginkgoales in the upper biozone, which in turn is clearly dominated by a gleicheniaceous fern assemblage. The latest Barremian to early Aptian age that has so far been accepted for this fossil flora, and the change of components in both biozones, suggests that this time interval may well correspond to the late Barremian to Early Aptian extinction event that has been proposed in other regions. This event was closely related to a strong volcanic activity that has also been recorded in the Baqueró Group. It is sug- gested that the vegetation during the time span represented by the Baqueró Group developed under stressfui conditions that caused extinctions and a consequent change of the environmental scenario.
