Best Landmarks in Goa "Best Landmarks in Goa" Erstellt von : Cityseeker 11 Vorgemerkte Orte Basilica of Bom Jesu "Housing The Mortal Remains of St. Xavier" Located in the UNESCO World Heritage Site area of Old Goa, the Basilica of Bom Jesu houses the corporeal remains of St. Francis of Xavier, which have miraculously still not decayed but remain as fresh as ever. And this is no urban legend because once in every 12 years, the remains are exposed to the general public for veneration. This 400-year-old church stands by Karthiknanda straight with simple exteriors built using red bricks and sandstone however the interiors are adorned with some interesting paintings that depict the life of the saint. A magnificently gilded alter leaves many impressed. +91 832 228 5790 [email protected] Old Goa Road, Old Goa Church Complex, Old Goa Se Cathedral "Portuguese Built Cathedral" Dedicated to Christianity's most famous female martyr Catherine of Alexandria, the Se Cathedral in Old Goa was designed by Ambrosio Argueiro and Julio Simao in 1562 and completed in 1619. The result of a 57 year long period of construction was a masterpiece which successfully infused Corinth, Tuscan, Portuguese and Gothic elements of architecture within it. The Golden Bell which is rated to be one of the finest in the world because of its distinctive rich peal, is housed in this cathedral. To the right, lies the Chapel of The Cross of Miracles where Christ is said to have appeared here in 1919. Folklore has it that this cross has been growing bigger and bigger ever since. St. Francis Xavier of Assisi also baptized a number of indigenous Goans in the baptismal here. +91 832 222 3412 (Tourist Information) Off National Highway 4, Old Goa Church Complex, Old Goa Viceroy's Arch "In Memory Of Vasco Da Gama" Located on way to the jetty from the Church Of Saint Cajetan, the Viceroy's Arch is a charming stone structure, dedicated to the memory of Europe's most celebrated navigator, Vasco Da Gama. Constructed in 1599 by his great-grandson, Francesco Da Gama, this arch captivates onlookers with its curious greenish granite and laterite stone which stand out starkly against the blue sky. This monument contains the statue of Vasco Da Gama at one end and a statue of Saint Catherine at the other of the river. The Viceroy's Arch has Portuguese inscriptions on both sides of the inner walls of the Arch, one of which is an inscription dedicated to the Immaculate Conception Of The Virgin Mary. Very historic and picturesque indeed, this is a must-see for all tourists. +91 832 222 3412 (Tourist Information) Divar Ferry Road, Old Goa Mandovi Bridge "Goa's Artery" The Mandovi Bridge built over Goa's artery, connects the towns of Panaji and Porvorim, mainly North Goa to the South. Reconstructed in 1986, questions still arise over its collapse in the early 1980s, with locals still pointing out at the faulty methods used during its construction. The new bridge, however stands tall above the River Mandovi, stretching to over a by Amol.Gaitonde kilometer in length. With no other bridge playing a similar commuting role in the city, the Mandovi Bridge has become an important part of Goa's rich history. +91 832 222 3412 (Tourist Information) Mandovi Bridge Road, Off National Highway 17, Panaji Secretariat Building (Idalcao's Palace) "The Viceroy's Resthouse" The Secretariat Building or Idalcao’s Palace at Panaji spells Royal Portuguese architecture right from its outset. Built by Mughal leader Adilshah in the early 16th Century, the building is one of Panaji's oldest standing heritage structures. The former fortress is now home to the Goan State Legislation. Along with nearby tourist attractions like the Statue of Abbe Faria and the Central Library, the Secretariat Building is a noticeable and integral part of Panaji's rich history. +91 832 222 3412 (Tourist Information) Panjim Main Street, Off Mahatma Gandhi Road, Panjim Statue of Abbe Faria "Memorial to the Father of Hypnotism" The statue of Abbe Faria was erected by his family in Panaji as a tribute to his noteworthy career. Tucked amidst major tourist attractions and right beside the Secretariat building, stands this captivating bronze figure portraying Faria, the 'Father of Hypnotism', casting a spell on a woman. The statue, constructed by Ramchandra Pandurang Kamat, is an important landmark and an integral part of Panaji's history. +91 832 222 3412 (Tourist Information) Mahatma Gandhi Road, Panaji Statue of Dona Paula "Legendry Statue" A very popular tourist spot in Goa located right off the Dona Paula Promenade, the Statue of Dona Paula is legendary and has a bit of a sinister twist to it. History has it that the Viceroy's daughter Dona Paula de Menzes jumped off the cliff here to her death for not being allowed to marry the love of her life, Gasper Diaz who was a humble fisherman. This site offers excellent views of the Marmugao Port across the Arabian Sea and the Dona Paula Beach. Right next to the statue is the jetty which is a good fishing spot and a preferred haunt for local tourists. +91 832 222 3412 (Tourist Information) Dona Paula Beach Road, Dona Paula Promenade, Goa Statue of Dr. Jack de Sequeira "In Memory of the Father of the Opinion Poll" Dr. Jack de Sequeira was a well known political leader in Goa and also the founder of the Goans Political Party. A memorial statue of this eminent personality was erected in Calangute as a tribute to his noteworthy political career. This noticeable figure stands at the intersection of Calangute and Candolim roads, and was raised by his family in early 2007. The statue stands as an important and integral part Goa's political history. +91 832 222 3412 (Tourist Information) Calangute Candolim Junction, Calangute Reis Magos Church "Dedication to St. Jerome" One of the oldest standing religious structures in Bardez is the Church at Reis Magos. Dating back to the early 1500s, the church houses tombs of two Viceroys, still in crisp condition. The exteriors of the church are painted in white, with a flight of bricked steps leading up to the main entrance. Within are wooden support pillars, wall paintings and carvings, and also small statues and figurines, each depicting events in the life of Jesus. An indication of the earlier Portuguese rule in Goa is evident in the form of the Royal family’s 'coat of arms' beneath the main crucifix. The Annual feast of the Three Kings is held at the church each year, thereby drawing locals in large numbers. The church is an important landmark, and an integral part of Reis Magos' history. +91 832 222 3412 (Tourist Information) Main Village Road, Church Road, Reis Magos Fort Aguada Old Lighthouse "Lighting the Way Through Time" Located on the western side of the Fort Aguada which is one of the oldest forts in Goa, the Fort Aguada Old Lighthouse was built by the Portuguese army as a watchtower to protect Goa from her enemies. At one point in time, the lighthouse contained the Great Bell from the Church of St. Augustine in Old Goa, which was later moved to Panaji. Left untouched till today, the lighthouse can be seen from a distance thanks to the height its placed at and the magnificence of the gleaming white structure. The lighthouse was erected in 1864 by the Portuguese and is probably the oldest in Asia. The lighthouse is surrounded by such scenic beauty as the sights of Carazalem, Mormugoa, Miramar and Panaji light the horizon. Entry to the lighthouse is restricted. Tourists often use this lighthouse as a background for pictures as this imposing structure breathes the historical importance of the location to all who see it. +91 832 222 3412 (Tourist Information) Fort Aguda Road, Fort Aguada, Sinquerim Baga Beach "The Fun Lies Here" Continuing along the same stretch as the Calangute Beach, Baga Beach is renowned for its pulsating nightlife and beach shacks. Surrounded by palm trees and rocky cliffs, the beach is well known for its diligent fishermen who come here at dawn to cast their nets into the ocean. Besides this quaint attraction, Baga also has diverse options for dining by Ganesh Dhamodkar and nightlife with many restaurants, pubs, and clubs located very close to the shore. Because of its popularity, Baga Beach has a wide range of accommodation choices. During the tourist season, water sports like speed boating, banana boating, and para-sailing are the order of the day. +91 832 243 7728 (Tourist goa-tourism.com/baga Baga Beach Road, Baga Information) Schließen Sie sich uns an bei: cityseeker.com Allgemeine Geschäftsbedingungen | DATENSCHUTZBESTIMMUNG | API | KONTAKT | Urheberrecht (COPYRIGHT) 2020 CITYSEEKER Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org).
