And this is no urban legend because once in every 12 years, the remains are exposed to the general public for veneration. This 400-year-old church stands by Karthiknanda straight with simple exteriors built using red bricks and sandstone however the interiors are adorned with some interesting paintings that depict the life of the saint. The result of a 57 year long period of construction was a masterpiece which successfully infused Corinth, Tuscan, Portuguese and Gothic elements of architecture within it. The Golden Bell which is rated to be one of the finest in the world because of its distinctive rich peal, is housed in this cathedral. To the right, lies the Chapel of The Cross of Miracles where Christ is said to have appeared here in 1919. Folklore has it that this cross has been growing bigger and bigger ever since. St. Francis Xavier of Assisi also baptized a number of indigenous Goans in the baptismal here. +91 832 222 3412 (Tourist Information) Off National Highway 4, Old Goa Church Complex, Old Goa Viceroy's Arch "In Memory Of Vasco Da Gama" Located on way to the jetty from the Church Of Saint Cajetan, the Viceroy's Arch is a charming stone structure, dedicated to the memory of Europe's most celebrated navigator, Vasco Da Gama. Constructed in 1599 by his great-grandson, Francesco Da Gama, this arch captivates onlookers with its curious greenish granite and laterite stone which stand out starkly against the blue sky. This monument contains the statue of Vasco Da Gama at one end and a statue of Saint Catherine at the other of the river. The Viceroy's Arch has Portuguese inscriptions on both sides of the inner walls of the Arch, one of which is an inscription dedicated to the Immaculate Conception Of The Virgin Mary. Reconstructed in 1986, questions still arise over its collapse in the early 1980s, with locals still pointing out at the faulty methods used during its construction. The new bridge, however stands tall above the River Mandovi, stretching to over a by Amol.Gaitonde kilometer in length. Built by Mughal leader Adilshah in the early 16th Century, the building is one of Panaji's oldest standing heritage structures. The former fortress is now home to the Goan State Legislation. History has it that the Viceroy's daughter Dona Paula de Menzes jumped off the cliff here to her death for not being allowed to marry the love of her life, Gasper Diaz who was a humble fisherman. This site offers excellent views of the Marmugao Port across the Arabian Sea and the Dona Paula Beach. A memorial statue of this eminent personality was erected in Calangute as a tribute to his noteworthy political career. This noticeable figure stands at the intersection of Calangute and Candolim roads, and was raised by his family in early 2007. The statue stands as an important and integral part Goa's political history. +91 832 222 3412 (Tourist Information) Calangute Candolim Junction, Calangute Reis Magos Church "Dedication to St. Jerome" One of the oldest standing religious structures in Bardez is the Church at Reis Magos. Dating back to the early 1500s, the church houses tombs of two Viceroys, still in crisp condition. The exteriors of the church are painted in white, with a flight of bricked steps leading up to the main entrance. Within are wooden support pillars, wall paintings and carvings, and also small statues and figurines, each depicting events in the life of Jesus. An indication of the earlier Portuguese rule in Goa is evident in the form of the Royal family’s 'coat of arms' beneath the main crucifix. The Annual feast of the Three Kings is held at the church each year, thereby drawing locals in large numbers. The church is an important landmark, and an integral part of Reis Magos' history. +91 832 222 3412 (Tourist Information) Main Village Road, Church Road, Reis Magos Fort Aguada Old Lighthouse "Lighting the Way Through Time" Located on the western side of the Fort Aguada which is one of the oldest forts in Goa, the Fort Aguada Old Lighthouse was built by the Portuguese army as a watchtower to protect Goa from her enemies. At one point in time, the lighthouse contained the Great Bell from the Church of St. Augustine in Old Goa, which was later moved to Panaji. Left untouched till today, the lighthouse can be seen from a distance thanks to the height its placed at and the magnificence of the gleaming white structure. The lighthouse was erected in 1864 by the Portuguese and is probably the oldest in Asia. The lighthouse is surrounded by such scenic beauty as the sights of Carazalem, Mormugoa, Miramar and Panaji light the horizon. Entry to the lighthouse is restricted.
