DAILY UPDATED CURRENT AFFAIRS – 05.04.2018 TO 08.04.2018 NATIONAL Internet Security Threat Report:India at 3 rd position • According to recently published Internet Security Threat Report,United States (with 26.61% global threats) was most vulnerable country to such cyber-attacks, followed by China (10.95%) in 2017. In India, 5.09% of global threats were detected, slightly less than 5.11% in 2016. • India emerged as third most vulnerable country in terms of risk of cyber threats, such as malware, spam and ransomware in 2017. • India continues to be second most impacted by spam and bots attacks, third most impacted by network attacks, and fourth most impacted by ransomware. • The global threat ranking is based on eight metrics — malware, spam, phishing, bots, network attacks, web attacks, ransomware and cryptominers. Real threat: Cryptojacking Cyber criminals are rapidly adding cryptojacking to their arsenal as ransomware market has become overpriced and overcrowded. It is rising threat to cyber and personal security. Cryptojacking is process of unauthorised coinminers siphoning resources from personal computer systems to giant data centers. Its massive profit incentive puts people, devices and organisations at risk of unauthorised coinminers. The crypto-coin mining gold rush resulted in an 8,500% increase in detections of coinminers on endpoint computers in final quarter of 2017. UIDAI launches Virtual ID facility for Aadhaar • Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched the much-awaited 'Virtual ID' which will be a random 16-digit number mapped to a person's Aadhaar number. • The concept of Virtual ID was announced earlier this year to address privacy concerns. The new feature will allow Aadhaar holders to quote their Virtual ID (VID) number without actually disclosing the 12-digit Aadhaar number for authentication or verification purposes. • UIDAI had stated that it will be compulsory for all agencies that undertake authentication to accept the VID from their users from June 1, 2018. • UIDAI Chief Executive Officer Ajay Bhushan Pandey India Overtakes Japan; Becomes World’s Second Largest Crude Steel Producer • India has overtaken Japan to become the world’s second largest producer of crude steel in February, according to the Steel Users Federation of India (SUFI). At present, China is the largest producer of crude steel in the world, accounting for more than 50% of the production. • Japan is at 3 rd position while USA is at 4 th position. • India’s crude steel production was up 4.4% and stood at 93.11 million tonnes (mt) for the period April 2017 to February 2018. • The Steel Ministry was working proactively to lay down the road map to achieve 300 million tonnes by 2030. • President of Steel Users Federation of India (SUFI)- Nikunj Turakhia Gobardhan Yojna to be launched from Karnal on Apr 30 • The Union Government will launch GOBARdhan Yojna, a central government scheme nationally from Karnal district of Haryana by end of April 2018. GOBAR is acronym for Galvanising Organic Bio Agro Resources. • The scheme was announced by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his 2018 budget speech with an aims to cover nearly 700 districts under the scheme in this financial year (2018-19). • Union Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation, Uma Bharti, Constituency-Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh Van Dhan Vikas Kendra” launched at Bijapur • The Ministry of Tribal Affairs has approved the establishment of the first multipurpose “Van Dhan Vikas Kendra” on pilot basis for the establishment in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh State for providing skill upgradation and capacity building training and setting up of primary processing and value addition facility. • Jual Oram-Minister of Tribal Affairs, Constituency- Sundargarh , Odisha TN govt launches mobile app for farmers • In a bid to use technology for farmers’ benefit, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami has launched a bi-lingual mobile application ‘Uzhavan’ (farmer) that will allow ryots to have access to nine types of services, including details about their crop insurance. • Palaniswami also launched the ‘Amma Bio-Fertiliser’ scheme, named after late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. The initiative was aimed at better management of nature farming, and help boost and maintain soil fertility. Piyush Goyal Launches UTTAM APP for Coal Quality Monitoring • The Union Minister for Railways and Coal Shri Piyush Goyal launched UTTAM App for Coal Quality Monitoring. UTTAM stands for – Unlocking Transparency by Third Party Assessment of Mined Coal (uttam.coalindia.in). It provides a platform for monitoring of sampling and coal dispatches. The App is designed with an aim to make the citizens a stakeholder in the coal ecosystem. Patna tops 4G availability in India: OpenSignal report • Patna has beaten Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai to top the 4G availability metric that measures where users get access to an LTE connection most of the time. • The survey has done by London-based “OpenSignal”, a wireless coverage mapping company Chhattisgarh awarded 'State of the Year' • Chhattisgarh bagged the 'State of the Year' Award under the 'business leader' category as part of the India Business Leadership for the remarkable increase in business and services activities in various sectors. • Union Information Technology and Electronics Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad gave the award at India Business Leader Awards (IBLA) organised by a leading business channel. Global Logistics Summit 2018 held in New Delhi • The Global Logistics Summit (GLS-2018) was held in New Delhi from April 5-6, 2018 to improve logistics and connectivity which are vital for increasing intra-state and international trade flows. • The summit was organised by Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce & Industry along with Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) and World Bank Group. • Indian logistics industry is estimated at around US $ 215 billion in 2019-20, growing at over 10 % annually. In the last decade or so, significant improvements in Railways, Roads, Highways, Inland Waterways, Aviation, Ports and Coastal Shipping have taken place. • India has improved its ranking in the Logistics Performance Index (prepared by the World Bank) from 54 in 2014 to 35 in 2016. • During the summit Union Minister for Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation, Shri Suresh Prabhu announced that 56 new airports will become functional in the next few years. Maharashtra government, the Centre signs MoU with World Bank to aid farmers The Centre, Maharashtra Government and World Bank signed a 420 million dollar project to help small and marginals farmers in the Marathwada and Vidarbha region of the State. The project will help in increasing climate resilient practices in agriculture and ensuring that farming continues to remain a financially viable activity for them. BILATERAL SAHYOG- HYEOBLYEOG 2018: Indian, Korean coast guards hold joint exercise Indo-Korean joint anti-piracy, search and rescue exercise ‘SAHYOG- HYEOBLYEOG 2018‘ was conducted off the Chennai coast. The Korean Coast Guard ship ‘BADARO’ took part in the exercise. Indian Coast Guard ships and an aircraft also took part in it. ECONOMY 1st Bi-Monthly Monetary Policy Statement Released By RBI • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on announced its bi-monthly monetary policy. As many analysts expected, the central bank kept the repo rate unchanged at 6% and the reverse repo rate at 5.75%. • This is the fourth successive policy review in which six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has kept the repo rate unchanged. • The Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate kept at 6.25%. • The MPC trimmed its April-September inflation projection to 4.7-5.1%, from a previous range of 5.1-5.6% that it had released in February. • The RBI projected economic growth of 7.4% for the current fiscal year that began on 1 April. Himachal gets $80m ADB loan for skill development • The Indian government has signed a $80 million (Rs 512 crore) loan agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to help improving skills of youth and modernising institutes. • This project of estimated cost of $100 million (Rs 640 crore) is expected to be completed by 2022 and the state will get 90 per cent of the loan component as grant from the Central government. • Asian Development Bank(Type-Multilateral Development Bank)-Formation: 19 December 1966, Headquarters: Manila, Philippines, Membership: 67 countries, President: Takehiko Nakao(Japan) India’s first blockchain implementation goes live • Three trade receivable discounting systems (TReDS)—digital invoice discounting platforms—approved so far by the RBI have jointly implemented a blockchain solution, which is expected to help reduce frauds in bills discounting or receivable financing. • The platforms—RXIL, A.TReDS and M1xchange—had been set up to bring together buyers, sellers and financiers for discounting the MSME invoices and provide them with timely funding. • This is billed as India’s first live blockchain implementation in the enterprise financial
