Margaret Madsen • May 14, 2017 PROGRAM NOTES Mark O’Connor (b. 1961) Appalachia Waltz Duration: 4 minutes Besides recently becoming infamous for condemning the world-renowned late pedagogue Shinichi Suzuki as a fraud, Mark O’Connor is also known as an award-winning violinist, composer, and teacher. Despite growing up in Seattle, Washington, O’Connor always had a passion for Appalachian fiddling and folk tunes, winning competitions in fiddling, guitar, and mandolin as a teen and young adult.
