CASEY JACKSON/CALLER-TIMES West Oso’s Avery leaves behind legacy of success Len Hayward Corpus Christi Caller Times USA TODAY NETWORK - TEXAS Creighton Avery has been a mainstay at West Oso High School for four years, and as the guard will grad- uate in May he leaves a legacy of success. Avery has earned a superlative or first team honor on the All-South Texas team since his freshman sea- son in 2015 when he was the Newcomer of the Year. Since then, he’s led the Bears to three straight regional tournament appearances and two straight regional fi- nal appearances. On the court, Avery averaged 21 points, along with 4.2 rebounds, 5.3 assists and four steals a game. Off the court, Avery is ranked No. 4 in the senior class and he is also the son of West Oso High School principal Terry Avery and athletic director and girls basketball coach Cheryl Fillmore. West Oso could not get over the hump in the region- al final but Avery helped add to West Oso’s long bas- ketball lore with his consistent play and leadership. CASEY JACKSON/CALLER-TIMES Quinton Martinez Corpus Christi Caller Times USA TODAY NETWORK - TEXAS When Allison Burda tore the flexor tendon in her shooting hand, it could have spelled disaster for the playoff hopes for Incarnate Word Academy. Instead, it became a turning point for the season. After missing two games, Burda came back a better teammate and her teammates were better after getting a boost of confidence in their own abilities. What resulted was a run to the TAPPS state tourna- ment for the first time since 1999. The Angels advanced to the state championship game before seeing their season come to an end in Wa- co. Burda filled the stat sheet averaging 17.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 3.5 blocks, 2.1 steals in her senior West Oso‘s Creighton Avery shoots the ball past Incarnate Word Academy’s Allison Burda and the season. Happy Birthday 2nd MAW Celebrating 100 Years of Marine Aviation Vol. 69, No. 27 www.cherrypoint.marines.mil July 7, 2011 Wing Operations Center offers Force in readiness critical training opportunities CPL. BRIAN ADAM JONES MCAS CHERRY POINT The 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing’s recent large force exercise, Exercise MAILED FIST 1-11, breathed life into a brand new tool that leaders say will redefi ne the way 2nd MAW conducts training and local operations. The Wing Operations Center, a windowless room with rows of work stations, a panel of large, wall-mounted monitors and, sometimes, an air of excited anticipation, offers a command and control nucleus for wing activity during major operational events. From the WOC, dozens of attentive Marines monitor occasionally hec- tic and elaborate missions and training events, keeping a close eye on everything from radar and weather patterns to video feeds and maps. “It’s a place where we can move the chess pieces across the operational spectrum,” said Lt. Col. Martin J. Forrest IV, the current operations offi cer for 2nd MAW. Forrest clearly sees the opportunities provided by the WOC. “It will allow us to train and execute large-force exercises much more realistically,” he said. Lt. Col. Matthew R. McGath, who served as the senior watch offi cer for the WOC during MAILED FIST, said that several times during the exercise, the existence of the WOC offered unique perspective or training opportunities that otherwise would have been lost. “The WOC allows coordination. It’s a big situational awareness tool and the wing’s current operations will really use it more often,” McGath CPL.
