Rise Against Hunger’s meal packaging program is a vol- unteer-based initiative that coordinates the assembly-line packaging of highly nutritious dehydrated meals comprised of rice, soy, vege- tables, and 23 essential vitamins and minerals.
According to Kyle Smith, event coordinator, “A group of 40-50 volunteers can package our goal of 20,000 meals in just a few hours. We are very close to meeting our goal with monitory donations. We now need people to volunteer to help put these meals together. To sign up they can either go to our website and register or they can simply call and put their name on the volunteer list. This is a very rewarding and fun opportunity to be a part of to help those people where poverty and starvation are at such a high rate. Please consider taking a few hours to help people who really deserve it by packing meals for them.”
The event at Kyle’s Farm will be on Saturday May 12 starting at 9am. And lunch will be provided for all the volunteers that participate. To sign up to help or to make tax deductible donation call 910-532-2061 or visit the website kylesfarmnc.com. More information can also be found on the Kyle’s Farm Facebook page as well.

ORDONEZ, cont. from 3 PRAYER, cont. from 1 “That was in 2008,” he remembers. “It was very busy down there and moving here was a nice change from that.”
At Union High, Ordonez ran track, cross country and played baseball. He graduated in 2010 and did, in fact, get his scholarship to run track at Mt. Olive College.
In addition to running, Ordonez earned his degree in education - and true to his plan - became a teacher and track coach out of college at Clinton High School.
When asked if his student-athletes were aware of him training for the 26-mile Boston Marathon, Ordonez says, “they have known for the past two years that I was training for it”.
Over the period of his training Ordonez shared his schedule and running plan with his Dark Horse teams. He participated in as many events as he could, including half-marathons and running long dis- tances preparing for one of the most difficult marathons in the world.
In order to participate in the Boston Marathon, runners have to qualify at least 18 months before the race takes place. For Ordonez, he unexpectedly qualified last March in the Wrightsville Beach Marathon.
Last month (March 17), Ordonez participated in a half-marathon in Wilmington where he fin- ished in second place, just four seconds shy of first place honors. President Ronald Reagan signed the amended “I really didn’t expect to finish so strong,” Ordonez admits with honesty. “It was 13.1 miles in an law designating the first Thursday of May as hour and 11 minutes.” a day of national prayer, and the 67th obser- vance since the day was first created in 1952 After that race, Ordonez felt confident that he was ready to make the trip to Massachusetts. by a joint resolution of Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. The 122nd running of the Boston Athletic Association’s Boston Marathon took place on Monday, April 16, 2018 (Patriots Day). The faithful in Clinton gathered on the steps of the Sampson County Courthouse ready to “I decided to arrive a few days early,” Ordonez explains. “My parents were driving up, but I flew lift up the needs of the nation to our Father, all so I didn’t have to sit in the car so long (before running) and I arrived on the Friday before (April in unity. 13). I wanted to have some time to look around and get acclimated to the city.” The event was led by Pastor Eddie Barnes and Ordonez said his experience was everything he thought it would be. was the fruition of the work by area churches. “I honestly never expected it to blow up like it did,” he said with a laugh. “I mean, I knew my kids were keeping up with me, but I had people calling and texting me - people who I don’t know were coming up to me asking me things about it and telling me what a good job I did. It made me feel really good about the work I put into preparing for the marathon.”
Ordonez, whose students and colleagues put up a sign of support in front of the school the week before he left, said that he appreciated the support and enjoys sharing his story with others.
“If I can motivate someone or help someone, that is great for me,” he said. “There is a great run- ning community here and if I can encourage someone I am all for it.”
He continues, “You know, running is physical, but it is also a sport that is very mental. You don’t think that you can do something, but in truth, you can push through anything - as long as you set your mind to it. You set a goal, then go out and do it.”
And has the experience inspire the members of the Dark Horse track and cross-country team?
“These kids are very hard workers,” he said. “They work harder than I have ever done. They run on weekends and over summer break. That wasn’t me (when I was their age), I didn’t run Clinton City Schools - Board Seat Vacancy over the summer. My coach hated it, but I didn’t.
