Since our launch in 1981, there has been proliferation of platforms, channels and catch-up services. In recent years, more people have started to watch television and video content distributed through the internet. Project Dovetail is at the heart of our development strategy. Its premise is that BARB’s services need to harness the strengths of two complementary data sources. - BARB’s panel of 5,100 homes provides representative viewing information that delivers programme reach, demographic viewing profiles and measurement of viewers per screen. - Device-based data from web servers provides granular evidence of how online TV is being watched. The TV Player Report is the first stage of Project Dovetail. It is a beta report that is based on the first outputs from BARB working with UK television broadcasters to generate data about all content delivered through the internet. This on-going development delivers a census-level dataset that details how different devices are being used to view online TV. Stage 2 of Project Dovetail will integrate this dataset with the outputs that our customers are used to receiving from BARB. We are in the final stages of tendering the contract for this stage. More news will follow on how we will deliver this. Click here to watch a short video that brings Project Dovetail to life. Alternatively, contact [email protected] with any questions. Only viewing time for audited platforms is included. See page 19. BARB’s TV Player Report - Page 3 Frequently asked questions Click on any of the questions below to get an explanation. Comic Relief: Multi-cloud, multi-foundation, 400 real-time donations per second, zero downtime, 100% success Over the past 30 years, Comic Relief [http://www.comicrelief.com/] has raised over £1 billion for good causes around the world and in the UK. Through their two campaigns Red Nose Day [www.rednoseday.com] and Sport Relief [http://www.sportrelief.com/], they used the money donated by the great British public to make their vision a reality: a just world, free from poverty. Founded in 1985 by comedy scriptwriter Richard Curtis and comedian Lenny Henry in response to famine in Ethiopia, every year Comic Relief has grown in size and influence. In its first telethon in 1998 it raised £76,610. In 2015, it raised £99,418,831. Every two years, Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day takes over primetime Friday night BBC TV for seven hours. The telethon is responsible for the majority of Comic Relief’s annual fundraising, attracting a large audience who donate money via the website or a network of 14,000 call centre operators across 120 call centres who donate their time for free. “With an increasing number of donations to Comic Relief being taken online, it is critical we have 100% confidence in our donations platform. Armakuni provides us with that confidence.” Derek Gannon, COO, Comic Relief The old donations platform The directors appreciated that the existing platform was nearing its end of life and a new platform was needed - when such a large percentage of your annual money is made in about 7 hours, you really want to know the thing is not going to fail.

Taboo: Why are Real-Life British Serial Killers Rarely Represented on Film? Antony Robert Earnshaw Sheffield Hallam University MA English by Research September 2017 1 Abstract This thesis assesses changing British attitudes to the dramatisation of crimes committed by domestic serial killers and highlights the dearth of films made in this country on this subject. It discusses the notion of taboos and, using empirical and historical research, illustrates how filmmakers’ attempts to initiate productions have been vetoed by social, cultural and political sensitivities. Comparisons are drawn between the prevalence of such product in the United States and its uncommonness in Britain, emphasising the issues around the importing of similar foreign material for exhibition on British cinema screens and the importance of geographic distance to notions of appropriateness. The influence of the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) is evaluated. This includes a focus on how a central BBFC policy – the so- called 30-year rule of refusing to classify dramatisations of ‘recent’ cases of factual crime – was scrapped and replaced with a case-by-case consideration that allowed for the accommodation of a specific film championing a message of tolerance.

Are the tabloids helping or hindering our progress? By Kevin Kelly (i) Executive Summary The aim of this study was to highlight the impact positive/ negative of the tabloid media in this country. The findings were pretty conclusive – the overwhelming message is negative. In terms of space allocated, twice as much space is allocated to negative headlines as opposed to positive one. Please note that for the purposes of this study; I didn’t include subheadlines and associated pictures which without doubt would have made the statistics even more negative. Negative headlines aren’t just allocated more space – they have more impact in terms of design ie font size/underlining/reverse etc. Collage without Independent Independent review: (Note we wanted to show both graphics considering that the Irish Independent isn’t considered a tabloid in the true sense of the word.) In terms of the number of positive to negative headlines; here are the stats: Positive Negative Neutral Total: 348 462 115 Totals without Irish Independent: 253 396 92 Daily Sun 58 85 30 Daily Star 79 110 25 Daily Mirror 62 92 18 Daily Mail 54 109 19 Irish Independent 95 66 23 This over emphasis on negative stories in the authors opinion has a negative knock on effect on consumer confidence – if peoples mind’s are continually filled with negativity, it is hard to expect them to be filled with confidence and want to go out and spend. Ironically their spending goes hand and hand with Advertising spend. Thus one could argue that the current editorial policy is damaging both the consumer and the newspaper.

David Walliams Makes a Splash for Sport Relief Submitted by: pr-sending-enterprises Thursday, 8 June 2006 Little Britain star David Walliams today ended months of speculation by announcing his epic attempt to swim 21 miles across the English Channel to raise cash for Sport Relief. The Speedo Sport Relief Super Swim (http://www.sportrelief.com/superswim) will see David brave freezing waters for up to 16 hours, dodge tankers and plough through seaweed but he needs the help of the British public to do it. David is today urging everybody to help keep him afloat by going to the Sport Relief website www.sportrelief.com/superswim and pledging their support for his fundraising marathon More people have managed to climb Everest than successfully swim the English Channel and less than 10% of people who have attempted the challenge have succeeded in reaching France. The story of David’s enormous undertaking will be documented in a one-hour programme, Little Britain's Big Swim, by the makers of ONE Life on BBC ONE on July 14th. To help prepare for the mammoth endurance feat David has teamed up with an expert from the English Institute of Sport, Greg Whyte, who has overseen his training schedule for the last 11 months. ‘The English Channel is the blue ribbon event of endurance swimming and represents one of the toughest physical challenges on the planet. David has been working tirelessly over the past 11 months to make an attempt on the channel, demonstrating a level of work and commitment as great as any elite athlete I have met.' (Greg Whyte) Notes to Editors: Readers can also support David by texting SWIM DAVID to 82125.
