Uc 8 , .Department of Commerce Na Canal Bureau of Standards Circular UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE • Sinclair Weeks, Secretary NATIONAL BUREAU OF STANDARDS • A. V. Astin, Director The ISCC-NBS Method of Designating Colors and a Dictionary of Color Names National Bureau of Standards Circular 553 Issued November 1, 1955 For sale by the Superintendent of Documents, U. S. Government Printing Office, Washington 25, D. C. Price 32 7 1 National Bureau of Standards NOV 1 1955 8 (0*118 QC 00 U555 Cop. 1 Preface I^Ever since the language of man began to develop, words or expressions have been used first to indicate and then to describe colors. Some of these have per- sisted throughout the centuries and are those which refer to the simple colors or ranges such as red or yellow. As the language developed, more and more color names were invented to describe the colors used by art and industry and in late years in the rapidly expanding field of sales promotion. Some of these refer to the pigment or dye used, as Ochre Red or Cochineal, or a geographical location of its source such as Naples Yellow or Byzantium. Later when it became clear that most colors are bought by or for women, many color names indicative of the beauties and wiles of the fan- sex were introduced, as French Nude, Heart’s Desire, Intimate Mood, or Vamp. Fanciful color names came into vogue such as Dream Fluff, Happy Day, Pearly Gates, and Wafted Feather. Do not suppose that these names are without economic importance for a dark reddish gray hat for Milady might be a best seller ; if advertised as Mauve Wine whereas it probably would not if the color were called Paris Mud.

  • Green Flowers
A Horticulture Information article from the Wisconsin Master Gardener website, posted 15 March 2010 Green Flowers Green is the color right now with St. Patrick’s Day approaching. Have you ever paid attention to fl owers with this color? In the garden, green is the most common foliage color, yet one of the rarest fl ower colors. Green fl owers are unusual, so when presented correctly, they add an air of sophistication to a planting and look good with every color. There are some naturally occurring green fl owers, but many more have been “created” by breeding and selection. These fl oral oddities are a fun addition to the garden. Some plants that naturally come in green include orchids and aroids Green is the thing in March. like Jack-in-the-Pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum) (not to mention a number of weeds with inconspicuous fl owers, but who wants those in their garden?). Naturally green fl owers of Cymbidium orchid (L), Pterostylis orchid (LC), Arisaema triphyllum (RC) and Bells of Ireland (R). Many newer green fl owers have been developed primarily for the cut fl ower and fl orist industry. There are green roses such as light green ‘Jade’ and yellow green ‘Emerald’ (and more varieties currently being developed in The Netherlands) as well as a bi-color rose ‘Cezanne’ that is a creamy pistachio edged with pink. The mossy green ‘Marimo’ hybrid Gerbera, green hydrangeas, green cymbidiums, and ‘Lime Green’ Lisianthus (from the Mariachi series that is a beautiful, pale green ) are marketed to fl orists. Among the exotic blooms shipped for fl oral arrangements are ‘Midori’ anthuriums and ‘Green Goddess’ callas (Zantedeschia).

  • The Color of Sunshine by Lydia Holley, Master Gardener When I Was a Child, My Mother Painted My Room Yellow
HENDERSON COUNTY MASTER GARDENERS ASSOCIATION (HCMG) WEEKLY NEWS ARTICLE September 14, 2020 The Color of Sunshine By Lydia Holley, Master Gardener When I was a child, my mother painted my room yellow. After having lived surrounded by the color of lemon chiffon, I adore almost every shade of yellow, whether it is a soft cream or a dark gold. Yellow is a happy color, and one that mixes well with most color schemes. Want a warm color scheme? Try yellow, red, and orange. Want a complimentary scheme? Purple and yellow are fun together. Yellow, blue, and red is another classic color scheme. I have read that an all- yellow garden is the easiest color scheme to get right. Simply add plants in all shades of this sunny color. Daffodils, forsythia, azalea, mahonia, irises, coreopsis, and Carolina jessamine are eye-catching in the spring. Your summer garden can be filled with black-eyed Susans, marigolds, daylilies, lilies, yarrow, zinnias, and sunflowers. Portulaca can reseed and give you yellow blooms for years to come. For fall, add mums and a non-aggressive cultivar of goldenrod. Esperanza and candlestick bushes can fill an entire corner with joy. The cheerful color of yellow can be added in winter with the merry faces of pansies. If you are lucky, you can find a yellow camellia. There are also several plants that have golden-variegated foliage. With the number of yellow flowers available, it must be one of Mother Nature’s favorite colors. Throw caution to the wind and add it in abundance. For more information, call 903-675-6130, email [email protected], or visit txmg.org/hendersonmg.
