    FALL I N L O V E AGAIN Fall in love again Welcome back to the Whitworth. As you are about to discover, a £15 million development has transformed the gallery, fully integrating it into the park we call home. An art garden by Sarah Price, sculpture terrace and orchard garden, alongside new spaces that embrace the park - such as our landscape gallery and a café in the trees - all reflect our beautiful setting. With double the room, the Whitworth launches with ten new exhibitions. From a major solo show by Cornelia Parker to a stunning installation by Cai Guo-Qiang, plus exhibitions by Sarah Lucas, Thomas Schütte, and the photographer Johnnie Shand Kydd, we open our new gallery spaces in spectacular fashion. Alongside sit selections of some of the best pieces from our wonderful collections – from the explosive art of the 1960s to historic watercolours and textiles – plus two exhibitions of works recently and generously donated to us by the Karpidas Foundation. But it’s not all about art at the new Whitworth. Ever since we first opened, in 1889, we have been a gallery in a park – a space to learn and to try new things, a place to bring friends and family, and a gallery where, for a while at least, you can escape the busy city on our doorstep.     She Who Is Adrienne Kennedy and the Drama of Difference Curated by Hilton Als and Artists Space Artists Space celebrates the singular vision of 88-year-old playwright Adrienne Kennedy February 29 – March 29, 2020 through a series of live performances, readings, screenings, and an exhibition of archival materials that transforms the building’s lower level into a theater and exhibition in homage to Kennedy’s radical vision. The multi-format program engages with the stories, literary figures, movies, and historical events that continue to inspire the playwright’s groundbreaking work, her plays boldly defying modernism’s trajectory by actively blending and juxtaposing unlikely voices and tones, these startling multiplicities often located within single shifting characters. In their brutal eloquence, Kennedy’s plays draw from a diverse set of mythological, historical, and geographic references to constitute and re-constitute blackness against the violent forces that have historically demarcated its ambivalent shape. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Ohio-raised Kennedy came to New York in 1954. After a transformative sea voyage and stay in Africa and Europe with her family, Kennedy returned to New York where her first drama, Funnyhouse of a Negro, was finally produced in 1964 with the mentorship of the legendary playwright Edward Albee. The show earned Kennedy an Obie for best play, and she became known to the artists and writers who frequented La MaMa and other experimental venues where the writer’s early scripts were realized. During those years, Kennedy stood apart from the burgeoning Black Arts Movement, which encouraged the making of revolutionary plays for black audiences.

As you read this you will have heard whether we have won Museum of the Year. Being included in this illustrious shortlist is a win in itself. We’ve won North West Building of the year from RIBA and had the most incredible press coverage all over the world for the exhibitions that christened our new building. Huge thanks to our architects MUMA, our artists and most of all, thanks to you, our visitors, who have made the Whitworth such a hit. And we’re already into our second season; with a decidedly international flavour, four decades of contemporary Chinese art, Arvo Pärt, Gerhard Richter, Bedwyr Williams, Richard Forster. We hoped you enjoy these stellar shows as much as you loved our opening exhibitions. But it’s not only all about art at the Whitworth. Ever since we opened in 1889 we have been a gallery in a park – a space to learn and try new things, a place to bring friends and family. A gallery where, for a while at least, you can escape the busy city on our doorstep. As the weather warms up we are looking forward to our first summer in the art garden.     Further details of the Whitworth Opening Programme The Whitworth reopens its doors on 14 February 2015 as an extended gallery in a park, with new exhibition spaces and greatly enhanced visitor facilities that redefine its role for the 21st century. The new Whitworth physically and visually reconnects the gallery with its surrounding park. The extended display areas reach into the landscape, with new and recently acquired sculpture on display in the gallery grounds and in a new art garden and orchard designed by painterly garden designer Sarah Price. The programme opens with a major solo exhibition from one of Britain’s most acclaimed contemporary artists, Cornelia Parker, and a spectacular installation by leading Chinese-born artist, Cai Guo-Qiang. It also brings together highlights from the Whitworth’s eclectic collection of historical and contemporary fine art, textiles and wallpaper that reflect the gallery’s personality today and illuminate key moments in its history. Cornelia Parker 14 February – 31 May 2015 Cornelia Parker’s work transforms ordinary objects into the compelling and the extraordinary. Featuring career-defining works such as Cold Dark Matter (An Exploded View) (1991) and The Distance (A Kiss With String Attached) (2003) , this exhibition also shows many new works that continue her preoccupation with dematerialising matter; bullets, blood and bronze are transformed into linear explorations. Unique to the Whitworth is War Room , a vast and immersive installation made from punched out paper negatives taken from the Poppy Factory in Richmond, its moiré of empty spaces echoing the 45 million remembrance poppies made each year.
