Extend 1 Problem and Solution Name Date Extend 1 Problem and Solution In stories and in real life, people often face problems. Most of these problems have solutions. In a story, the problems and solutions may be part of the plot, or the plan of the story. Think of a character in a story you like. What problem does the character face? How does the character solve the problem? Read the problems below. Think about how you would solve each one. Then choose one of the problems and write a short story that includes the original problem and its solution in the plot. 1. You and your best friend are waiting in a crowd of people for a bus. The bus arrives and you get on. Your friend is left behind. 2. You wake up on Sunday morning and remember that it’s your friend’s birthday. You forgot to buy your friend a present, and the stores near your house are closed. 3. You promised your dad that you would paint the fence behind your house. Three of your friends come by and ask you to go bike riding with them. You want to go with them, but you have to finish painting the fence for your father. Suppose that, instead of hiding her in a cave beneath his house, he and his mother ran from the village and started a new life in a faraway place. How might the plot of the story change? Write a new story that tells what happened to the village after the warriors arrived with the three impossible tasks. He must solve three impossible tasks or he and his village will be conquered by another lord. The young lord makes four attempts to find a solution to his problem. Write what happens each time. 1. He summons the six wisest people in the village. The wise people cannot solve 2. The wise people ask the gods for help. 3. They ask the clever badger to help them. 4. For example, quickly and rapidly, funny and amusing, talk and speak are synonyms. Antonyms are words with opposite meanings. For example, hot and cold, fast and slow, good and bad are antonyms. Think about how your character might change if he or she lived in a different place or at a different time.     Department of English Jack Kerouac’s Poetics: Repetition, Language, and Narration in Letters from 1947 to 1956 Nicholas Charles Baldwin Master’s Thesis Transnational Creative Writing Spring, 2019 Supervisor: Adnan Mahmutovic Baldwin 2 Abstract Despite the fame the prolific impressionistic, confessional poet, novelist, literary iconoclast, and pioneer of the Beat Generation, Jack Kerouac, has acquired since the late 1950’s, his written letters are not recognized as works of literature. The aim of this thesis is to examine the different ways in which Kerouac develops and employs the poetics he is most known for in the letters he wrote to friends, family, and publishers before becoming a well-known literary figure. In my analysis of Kerouac’s poetics, I analyze 20 letters from Selected Letters, 1940-1956. These letters were written before the publication of his best-known literary work, On The Road. The thesis attempts to highlight the characteristics of Kerouac’s literary control in his letters and to demonstrate how the examination of these poetics: repetition, language, and narration merits the letters’ treatment as works of artistic literature. Likewise, through the scrutiny of my first novella, “Trails” it then illustrates how the in-depth analysis of Kerouac’s letters improved my personal poetics, which resemble the poetics featured in the letters.     Maggie’s Civics Corner Lesson 16 Maggie Says... Today’s lesson is about Leaders and Heroes. As a dog, I have many heroes in my life. The crossing guard who makes my walk safe is one of my heroes. Thinking about today’s world, I would put all of the doctors, nurses, and first- responders on my list of heroes. Sticky Situation: I love when someone reads to me. One of my favorite fairy tales is Jack and the Beanstalk. I have listened to that fairy tale many times. Every time I hear it, I wonder if Jack is a hero or a villain. Read the story below. After reading or hearing the story, do you think Jack is a hero or a villain. Be prepared to support your point of view. Jack and the Beanstalk Jack is a very poor young boy who lives in a forest with his mother. Jack and his mother have a cow. It is the cow’s milk that provides them with most of what they have to eat or drink. One day, the cow no longer is able to give milk. Jack’s mom decides that Jack should take the cow to market and sell it in exchange for money and food. As Jack starts off toward the market, he meets a man who offers him beans, magic beans, that the man says will grow very, very tall in only one night. Jack decides to give the man the cow in exchange for the magic beans. When Jack arrives home, he tells his mother what he has done, expecting her to be as excited as he is.
