Layered homogeneities: Madhusudan Dutt and the dilemma of the early Bengali theatre Dhrupadi Chattopadhyay Vol. 4, No. 2, pp. 5–34 | ISSN 2050-487X | www.southasianist.ed.ac.uk 2016 | The South Asianist 4 (2): 5-34 | pg. 5 Vol. 4, No. 2, pp. 5-34 Layered homogeneities: Madhusudan Dutt, and the dilemma of the early Bengali theatre DHRUPADI CHATTOPADHYAY, SNDT University, Mumbai Owing to its colonial tag, Christianity shares an uneasy relationship with literary historiographies of nineteenth-century Bengal: Christianity continues to be treated as a foreign import capable of destabilising the societal matrix. The upper-caste Christian neophytes, often products of the new western education system, took to Christianity to register socio-political dissent. However, given his/her socio-political location, the Christian convert faced a crisis of entitlement: as a convert they faced immediate ostracising from Hindu conservative society, and even as devout western moderns could not partake in the colonizer’s version of selective Christian brotherhood. I argue that Christian convert literature imaginatively uses Hindu mythology as a master-narrative to partake in both these constituencies. This paper turns to the reception aesthetics of an oft forgotten play by Michael Madhusudan Dutt, the father of modern Bengali poetry, to explore the contentious relationship between Christianity and colonial modernity in nineteenth-century Bengal. In particular, Dutt’s deft use of the semantic excess as a result of the overlapping linguistic constituencies of English and Bengali is examined. Further, the paper argues that Dutt consciously situates his text at the crossroads of different receptive constituencies to create what I call ‘layered homogeneities’. -

Uttarpara Hitakari Sabha and Its Role for Progress of Women Education of Colonial Bengal Dr. Supriya Biswas Assistant Professor of History, Gour Mahavidyalaya, Malda, West Bengal After the establishment of British rule in India nay Bengal some Bengali intelligentsia especially in the nineteenth century introduced with Western education and thoughts. They were inspired in a collective way for the benevolent activities of their countrymen. As a result, many educational, cultural and literary-based associations emerged in the first half of the nineteenth century for social reform in Bengal such as ‘Academic Association’(1828), ‘Society for the Acquisition of General Knowledge’(12th March,1838) of Henry Vivian Derozio, ‘Tattvabodhini Sabha’(21st October,1839) of Debendra Nath Tagore, ‘Vernacular Translation Society’ (December, 1850), ‘Bethune Society’(11th December, 1851) of Dr. J.F.Mouat, the Council of Education, ‘Bidyotsahini Sabha’ (June, 1853) of Kaliprasanna Singha, ‘Bamabodhini Sabha’(1863)1 etc. But ‘Uttarpara Hitakari Sabha’ was one of them, established on 5th April (Sunday), 1863 by some local (Uttarpara) educated youths under the leadership of Harihar Chattopadhyay2. This paper is intended to explore the rise of Uttarpara Hitakari Sabha and its role in the cause of women's emancipation of colonial Bengal. Before going to the detailed discussion on ‘Uttarpara Hitakari Sabha’ it is necessary to find out what was the background behind the establishment of ‘Hitakari Sabha’. Nilmani Mukherjee in his book ‘A Bengal Zamindar, Jaykrishna Mukherjee of Uttarpara and His Times 1808-1888’ wrote that “Jaykrishna Mukherjee had no active role in the history of the Hitakari Sabha”3. But this organisation for public welfare in Uttarpara, a few miles from Calcutta, owed its origin to the illustrious Mukherjee family of Uttarpara of whom Jaykrishna Mukherjee and his brother Rajkrishna Mukherjee were well-known for their philthrophy and patronage of public causes4. -

T Guest Lecturer in English MPMMSN Trusts College, Shoranur It is a quintessential human nature to compare, contrast and weigh the value of anything in the world. Perhaps it is our need to put order into an otherwise chaotic life that drives us to categorize everything. Our culture, tradition, art and literature are not exempted from this grading process. Thus it is quite natural that children’s literature got relegated to the peripheries of mainstream literature. This marginalization is universal and Malayalam literature too avoided it as trivial and childish. But now a days Children’s literature is gaining popularity in academic circles with many a scholars opening up new areas of researches in the field. Thus it would be meaningful to trace the trajectory of poems for children in Malayalam literature. A child’s acquaintance with poetry starts from the womb itself. This grows into much stronger relation as he/she is tucked into sleep with sweet lullabies by mother. Thus poetry is the first literature presented to a child.Offering comfort and happiness in rhythm and sounds these verses prepare the developing minds to receive longer forms of literature. But still there are debates regarding the characteristics of verses that can be categorized as children’s poems. WOMEN AND INDIA’S INDEPENDENCE MOVEMENT Role of Indian women: The entire history of the freedom movement is replete with the saga of bravery, sacrifice and political sagacity of great men and women of the country. This struggle which gained momentum in the early 20th century, threw up stalwarts like Mahatma Gandhi, Lala Lajpat Rai, Motilal Nehru, Abul Kalam Azad, C. Rajagopalachari, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Jawaharlal Nehru and Subash Chander Bose. Their number and stature often gives us an erroneous impression that it was only a man’s movement. But it is not so. Many prominent women played a leading role in the freedom movement. The important place assigned to women in India dates back to the time of the Vedas and Smritis. Manu declared that where women were adored, Gods frequented that place, During the Vedic age the position of women in society was very high and they were regarded as equal partners with men in all respects. Who had not heard of Maitri, Gargi, Sati Annusuya and Sita? In keeping with this tradition, burden of tears and toils of the long years of struggle for India’s freedom was borne by the wives, mothers, and daughters, silently and cheerfully. The programme of self-imposed poverty and periodical jail going was possible only because of the willing co-operation of the worker’s family. In the various resistance movements in the villages, the illiterate women played this passive but contributory part as comrades of their menfolk. Introduction The Asiatic Society, Kolkata. A toxic blend of coal dust and diesel exhaust streaks the façade with grime. The concrete of the new wing, once a soft yellow, now is dimmed. Mold, ever the enemy, creeps from around drainpipes. Inside, an old mahogany stair- case ascends past dusty paintings. The eighteenth-century fathers of the society line the stairs, their white linen and their pale skin yellow with age. I have come to sue for admission, bearing letters with university and government seals, hoping that official papers of one bureaucracy will be found acceptable by an- other. I am a little worried, as one must be about any bureaucratic encounter. But the person at the desk in reader services is polite, even friendly. Once he has enquired about my project, he becomes enthusiastic. “Ah, English language poetry,” he says. “Coleridge. ‘Oh Lady we receive but what we give . and in our lives alone doth nature live.’” And I, “Ours her wedding garment, ours her shroud.” And he, “In Xanadu did Kublai Khan a stately pleasure dome decree.” “Where Alf the sacred river ran,” I say. And we finish together, “down to the sunless sea.” I get my reader’s pass. But despite the clerk’s enthusiasm, the Asiatic Society was designed for a different project than mine. The catalog yields plentiful poems—in manuscript, on paper and on palm leaves, in printed editions of classical works, in Sanskrit and Persian, Bangla and Oriya—but no unread volumes of English language Indian poetry. In one sense, though, I have already found what I need: that appreciation of English poetry I have encountered everywhere, among strangers, friends, and col- leagues who studied in Indian English-medium schools. -
