Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs PROGRAMME Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs a pantomime written by Jo Smith directed by Pru Harrold Performed by Headley Theatre Club at Headley Village Hall 14, 15 & 21, 22 January 2005 Welcome — to Headley Theatre Club’s fifty-third season… … and surprisingly, according to our records, we’ve only ‘done’ Snow White once before in all that time. The Snow White of that performance has graduated (lapsed, degenerated, fallen) to be this year’s Wicked Queen – in pantomime that’s how it goes! You probably know the plot – Walt Disney made sure of that – but in our version the mirror’s right off the wall! Before we expose you to our fragile friend, though, we’d like you to meet a couple of Renaissance men. It’s time to go, don’t you know, when Mac and Leo start the show… 2 Cast The King of Paramedichia ............................................... Animated Enchantment: A Psychoanalytic Exploration of the Enduring Popularity of Disney’s First Feature Films Howard Jacobs Queen Mary, University of London Thesis submitted for the qualification of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) March 2014 2 Declaration I declare that the work presented in this thesis is my own. I have received professional assistance with styling, especially in making the bibliography and footnotes consistent, from Ms Chris Steel. (http://www.chrissteel-editorial.com/) Howard Jacobs Date: March 2014 Copyright The images in the Figures in this thesis are from: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs © Walt Disney Productions; Ivan the Terrible Part I © Mosfilm; Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde © Paramount Pictures; Pinocchio © Walt Disney Productions; Dumbo © Walt Disney Productions; Bambi © Walt Disney Productions. For all other parts of the thesis, the author’s copyright is Attribution- NonCommercial-NoDerivs (CC BY-NC-ND) 3 Abstract In this thesis I explore reasons for the widespread and enduring popularity of Disney’s first feature-length films (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Pinocchio (1940), Dumbo (1941) and Bambi (1942)). While acknowledging the historical, industrial and aesthetic features that have contributed to their success, my argument is that the continuing fascination of these films is in large part attributable to the manner in which they engage the spectator and evoke unconscious concerns about family cohesion, interpersonal conflicts and the death of parents. My investigation begins with an analysis of the films’ prefilmic provenance and narrative characteristics, placing an emphasis on the role of their narrative and extra-narrative components as embodying social, pedagogical and psychological meanings.

  • Freddie Mercury – the Man Behind the Music
Freddie Mercury – The Man Behind the Music Submitted For: Music 1A: Psychology of Music (2016-17) Word Count: 1851 Introduction Ask any modern musician in the Western world and they are bound to know of Freddie Mercury – the man himself or any of the work he was involved in. As the frontman of the spectacular band, Queen, Mercury spent much of his life in the limelight and under the scrutiny of the public eye and ear. However, upon first listening, one is ignorant to the meaning of his music and the wisdom in the words of his songs, leading us to ask; Who was the man behind the music? There are a multitude of factors contributing to the formation of Mercury’s musical identity; his cultural heritage, education and even his sexuality. It is through exploration of these parts of the musician’s life, that we can determine what took the young Farrokh Bulsara and shaped him into the musical hero that is, Freddie Mercury. Childhood and Education On 5 September 1946, Farrokh Bulsara was born to parents Bomi and Jer, on the island of Zanzibar.1 From the age of eight, Farrokh attended the English boarding school, St. Peter’s near Bombay and began to show an interest in music at the same time in his life. His mother recalls that her son would ‘stack the singles to play constantly’ on the family’s record player, with any type of music he could find (mostly Indian music, and the odd Western record when they became available).2 Prompted by a letter of recommendation written by the headmaster at St Peter’s, the Bulsara family paid the extra fees to the school for Farrokh to receive piano lessons.

A FREE PLANNING GUIDE By Joe Dean/Quest Experiences http://www.treasurehunthub.com/Disney http://www.treasurehunthub.com/Disney Introduction We’re really excited that you chose to download this planning guide! That may be a strange way to start, but it excites us when others get as excited as we are to plan creative and imaginative experiences for others! This guide is divided into two main sections. In the first secion, THE EXPERIENCE, we’ll explain the overall concept for planning the experience for your princess. We’ll discuss what it might look like so you can decide how involved you’d like to make it. The second section, THE STORYBOOK ELEMENTS, detail activities that you will string together to create the actual experience. Before you get started, remember to have fun with it yourself. Have you ever wanted to be a Disney Princess yourself? Imagine yourself going through the experience and savor the moments dreaming of how much your little princess will get in return for your efforts. They’re only young once! http://www.treasurehunthub.com/Disney THE EXPERIENCE Although we’ve designed experiences for individuals that were as complicated as a full blown motion picture, every effort has been made to provide an easy to use guide that will allow YOU to make the experience that you create perfect for your own energy level. The MOST important part of the entire planning process is to keep from getting overwhelmed. • Blancanieves Y Los Siete Enanitos (1937): Una Mirada Crítica Sobre El Período De Entreguerras a Través De Sus Fuentes Iconográficas

  • Piano and Popular Culture: How Snow White And
PIANO AND POPULAR CULTURE: HOW SNOW WHITE AND CHARLIE BROWN MADE IT TO THE CONCERT HALL by LAURA ELIZABETH MITCHELL KEVIN THOMAS CHANCE, COMMITTEE CHAIR JOANNA BIERMANN TANYA L. GILLE KEN OZZELLO THOMAS S. ROBINSON KEVIN H. SHAUGHNESSY A DOCUMENT Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in the Department of Music in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2018 Copyright Laura Elizabeth Mitchell 2018 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT The relationship of popular culture to the piano can be cited in any number of works from Mozart’s Rondo Alla Turca to Liszt’s paraphrase of Rigoletto, not to mention the myriad themes and variations from various composers drawing on popular melodies from folk songs to operas. Composers’ fascination with popular culture has only increased with the passage of time. This document will focus on more recent inclusions of popular culture in works for piano. The works examined are specifically, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Peanuts Gallery, which draws inspiration from Charles Schulz’s Peanuts comic strip, Earl Wild’s Reminiscences of Snow White, and Greg Anderson’s arrangement of Three Waltzes for Two Pianos, which draw inspiration from the Walt Disney Productions adaptation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The objective will be to determine whether or not these pieces draw upon the scores that are culturally attached to these characters such as the music that accompanies the Peanuts televised specials composed by Vince Guaraldi and the film score for Snow White composed by Frank Churchill. The piano works dealing with each animated classic will also be compared to one another to determine whether or not they share compositional choices or pianistic strategies to represent the characters, stories, or motives found in the original compositions.
