The etymology of an urban legend [word count: 6302] Dr Martin Hirst, School of Journalism & Communication, University of Queensland [email protected] Abstract: The delightfully enigmatic and poetic ‘gonzo’ has come a long way from its humble origins as a throw-away line in the introduction to an off-beat story about the classic American road trip of discovery. Fear and loathing in Las Vegas is definitely a classic of post-war literature and this small word has taken on a life of its own. A Google search on the Internet located over 597000 references to gonzo. Some had obvious links to Hunter S. Thompson’s particular brand of journalism, some were clearly derivative and others appear to bear no immediate connection. What, for example, is gonzo theology? Despite the widespread common usage of gonzo, there is no clear and definitive explanation of its linguistic origins. Dictionaries differ, though they do tend to favour Spanish or Italian roots without much evidence or explanation. On the other hand, biographical sources dealing with Thompson and new journalism also offer different and contradictory etymologies. This paper assesses the evidence for the various theories offered in the literature and comes close to forming a conclusion of its own. The paper then reviews the international spread of gonzo in a variety of areas of journalism, business, marketing and general weirdness by reviewing over 200 sites on the Internet and many other sources. Each of these manifestations is assessed against several gonzo criteria. -

The result is a poetic, perceptive, and wildly funny stream-of-consciousness take on 1969 America as only Hunter S. Thompson could see it. Screwjack just gets weirder with it's second offereing, Death of a Poet . As Thompson describes this trailer-park confrontation with the dark side of a deservingly doomed friend: Whoops, I thought. Welcome to the night train. The heart of the collection lies in its final, title piece, an unnaturally poignant love story. What makes the romantic tale Screwjack so touching, for all its queerness, is the aching meloncholy in its depiction of modern man's burden: that we are doomed. -

Thompson made it his mission to expose and defy structures of American society which he believed inhibited the exercise of personal freedom and, consequently, made realizing the “American Dream” impossible. Through his unique voice and style of literary nonfiction known as “Gonzo Journalism” Thompson is able to debunk the myth of the American Dream by attacking false conceptions of it, thereby highlighting the failures of both these conceptions and the structures of society, politics, class, and authority which give rise to them. -

THOMPSON This thesis will argue that the work of Hunter S. Thompson can be read as American Picaresque due to Thompson's utilization of episodic narrative structure, Picaresque archetypes, and various Picaresque themes such as the criticism of “civilized” society and the picaro’s fear of aging. Thompson gained notoriety after the success of his 1971 novel, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream. In the book, Thompson showcases his unique genre of writing, which he affectionately referred to as Gonzo Journalism, a style that is a unique adaptation of the traditional Picaresque narrative. Both Picaresque and Gonzo narratives are centered on a kind of character often identified as a picaro, a rogue who critiques, and often mocks, the society in which he refuses to participate. Such tales are also episodic; there is no continuous plot, and the picaro lacks character development. Although Gonzo Journalism shares numerous devices with the traditional picaresque narrative, it is also different in many ways: as opposed to the picaros of classic Spanish literature, Thompson's picaro-like characters firmly believe that there is no saving their society, and facilitate the episodic structure of the picaresque through drug abuse—blackouts are a recurring motif in Thompson’s work. So far, most of the scholarly articles written on Thompson's texts focus on how the literary community classifies his work in the spectrum of journalism. -

Hunter S. Thompson: His Last Shotgun Art. No More Fear And Loathing In Woody Creek. Uncle Duke From: Gary Trudeau – Doonesbury Hunter S. Thompson, the counter culture ‘gonzo’ journalist, died on February 20, 2005 by a weapon of his choice. The inventor of Shotgun Art and Shotgun Golf fatally shot himself at his Owl Creek farm in Woody Creek, Colorado. He was 67. ‘Prince of Gonzo’ he called himself, ‘Doctor Gonzo’, ‘Doctor of Journalism’, ‘Outlaw Journalist’, ‘Doc’, ‘The Duke’: Hunter Stockton Thompson (Louisville, Kentucky, 1939). Rock star of the written word. And as with rock stars meeting one is never an easy task. But we managed, once, after endless waiting and drinking our way into the local bar, The Woody Creek tavern. The sun was already sinking behind the Rocky Mountains, bathing the area around the Tavern in a chill and cheerless light, when finally the great Doctor made his appearance. Five in the morning would have been a more approriate time. Word had it that Thompson was burned out. That, battle weary, he’d given up on the Gonzo cause. Gonzo comes from the French-Canadian word gonzeaux which means something along the lines of shining path. Hunter Thompson was that path; the only fully fledged grand master of Gonzo. His Gonzo style was often confused with New Journalism, made famous by Tom Wolfe and Gay Talese. But that is quite incorrect. Wolfe and the like attack the truth with the techniques of the novelist. They lose themselves in the minds of their subjects. Thompson lost himself in his own mind, and traced only his own madcap, hallucinatory journey through the many events in his stories.
