Lepidoptera in Cheshire in 2002 A Report on the Micro-Moths, Butterflies and Macro-Moths of VC58 S.H. Hind, S. McWilliam, B.T. Shaw, S. Farrell and A. Wander Lancashire & Cheshire Entomological Society November 2003 1 1. Introduction Welcome to the 2002 report on lepidoptera in VC58 (Cheshire). This is the second report to appear in 2003 and follows on from the release of the 2001 version earlier this year. Hopefully we are now on course to return to an annual report, with the 2003 report planned for the middle of next year. Plans for the ‘Atlas of Lepidoptera in VC58’ continue apace. We had hoped to produce a further update to the Atlas but this report is already quite a large document. We will, therefore produce a supplementary report on the Pug Moths recorded in VC58 sometime in early 2004, hopefully in time to be sent out with the next newsletter. As usual, we have produced a combined report covering micro-moths, macro- moths and butterflies, rather than separate reports on all three groups. Doubtless observers will turn first to the group they are most interested in, but please take the time to read the other sections. Hopefully you will find something of interest. Many thanks to all recorders who have already submitted records for 2002. Without your efforts this report would not be possible. Please keep the records coming! This request also most definitely applies to recorders who have not sent in records for 2002 or even earlier. It is never too late to send in historic records as they will all be included within the above-mentioned Atlas when this is produced.

(Lepidoptera: Coleophoridae) Ignác Richter Abstract. Present article brings information about new findings of case–bearing moths (Lepidoptera: Coleophoridae) from the Balkan Peninsula. Several species of the genus Coleophora were recorded for the first time for some of the Balkan countries. Coleophora herniariae, C. daglarica and C. albipennella are recorded as new for the fauna of Europe. The description Coleophora vardarella Richter, sp. nov., from Macedonia is given. Keywords. Lepidoptera, Coleophoridae, Coleophora vardarella sp. nov., Coleophora herniariae, Coleophora daglarica, Coleophora albipennella, Macedonia, the Balkan Peninsula. Author’s address. Ignác Richter | Malá Čausa 289, SK–971 01, Slovakia E-mail: [email protected] Introduction Intensive faunistic research of small moths (“Microlepidoptera”) of the Balkan Peninsula continues for several decades already and lasts until the recent times. The family Coleophoridae Bruand, 1850 belongs to the less known moths of the Balkans, therefore our focus has been oriented towards this large Lepidoptera family. Faunistic and systematic studies of this moth group in the Balkans resulted in interesting findings. One of the most important recent works about the genera Coleophora Hübner, 1822 and Goniodoma Zeller, 1849 of the Balkan Peninsula is the contribution of Richter & Pastorális (2015). Results of surveys conducted by seni- or author, executed in the years 2010–2014 at different sites of Croatia, Montene- gro, Macedonia, and Bulgaria were presented.

Beitrag Dietger Hausenblas, Stuttgart Abstract This paper is the author’s second contribution to the microlepidoptera fauna of Baden-Wuerttemberg and neighbouring regions. As a result of recent collecting and of a review of historical specimens in the mu- seums of Karlsruhe and Stuttgart several species are reported as new to the fauna of Baden- Wuerttemberg whereas some others have to be deleted from the faunal list. Two species - Metalampra italica Baldizzone , 1977 and Stenoptilia mariaeluisae B igot & P icard , 2002 - are new for Germany. In an appendix the geographical colour-code-system of the labels in the C. Reutti collection is elucidated. Newsletter 30 LEAFMINESNEWSLETTER M a rch 2 0 15 Recent additions to the host plant list The host plant list for Britisn leafminers of Pitkin and Plant is maintained on both the leafmine site (www.leafmines.co.uk and the UKflymines site (www.ukflymines.co.uk). If a host plant is not listed on these websites you may assume that it will be new to the UK. We need proof that the addition is correct. It may be possible from photographic evidence or it may need breeding through to determine whether the identity is correct. It may need DNA analysis before a new host plant is added as Ian Barton and Kathleen Rosewarne found when they discovered Phyllonorycter mines on Chaenomeles japonica. The species was unclear even when he bred the moths out and performed a genitalia dissection. Subsequent DNA analysis indicated that the species was Phyllonorycter sorbi and a new host plant for this species was added to the list. (Barton & Rosewarne, Entomologist’s Rec J Var (2014) 126, 93-96). The following recent new additions are illustrated. Phyllonorycter leucographella (Lep:Lithocolletinae) on Elm (Ulmus) Page 2 www.leafmines.co.uk Steve Hind writes ‘I found this Phyllonorycter leucographella mine on Elm on 26.x.2014 in Hyde Park, Hyde, Cheshire, VC58, which may be a new food plant. The small Elm, about two feet tall, was growing through a Pyracantha bush and the mined leaf was amongst those of the Pyracantha, so I guess the female moth was easily confused when laying the egg.’ Photo © Steve Hind Coleophora albitarsella (Lep: Coleophoridae) on Salvia On 07.vii.2014 Stewart Wright found 40+ cases of Coleophora albitarsella feeding on Salvia africana azurea in his garden in Norfolk.

  • MONITORING REPORT 2020 BILL BUDD It Is with Great Sadness That We Must Report the Death of Bull Budd in Autumn 2020
Wimbledon and Putney Commons ECOLOGICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING REPORT 2020 BILL BUDD It is with great sadness that we must report the death of Bull Budd in autumn 2020. Bill was our much respected, dragonfly and damselfly recorder and a member of the Wildlife and Conservation Forum. As well as recording on the Commons, Bill also worked as a volunteer at the London Natural History Museum for many years and was the Surrey Vice County Dragonfly Recorder. Bill supported our BioBlitz activities and, with others from the Forum, led dedicated walks raising public awareness of the dragonfly and damselfly populations on the Commons. In September 2020 in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the recording and conservation of Odonata, a newly identified dragonfly species found in the Bornean rainforest* was named Megalogomphus buddi. His contributions will be very much missed. * For further information see: https://british-dragonflies.org.uk/dragonfly-named-after-bds-county-dragonfly-recorder-bill-budd/ Dow, R.A. and Price, B.W. • Summary of Cheshire Moths: 2008-2013
CHESHIRE (VICE COUNTY 58) SUMMARY OF CHESHIRE MOTHS: 2008-2013 Authors: Steve H. Hind and Steve Holmes Date: December 2015 Summary of Cheshire Moths 2008-2013 Introduction With the absence of an annual moth report for six years and following publication of the 2014 report earlier this year, we have attempted to bring together some of the main changes to the counties moth populations since the last county report for 2007. Individual Micro-moth reports were published for 2008 and 2009 in the Journal of the Lancashire & Cheshire Entomological Society, Volumes 133 & 134, for Sessions 2009 & 2010 of the Annual Report & Proceedings but this is the first report to include the counties macro-moths for those years. Unfortunately, the amount of work required to produce a similar type of document to the 2014 report would have taken well over a year or more to complete and as such a more selective approach has been taken; this translates to producing an account for just those species that have either: been reported on very few occasions, or have undergone significant changes, either in terms of distribution or population Summary No fewer than seven new macro-moth and 23 micro-moth species appeared for the first time in Cheshire during the period covered by this publication; an astonishing number brought about by Moth recording continuing to increase during the period, especially of micro-moths. We received a record 8,200 records of micro-moths in 2008, yet this more than doubled to 17,700 in 2013. There are a number of references, particularly within the accounts relating to macro-moths, where mention is made of either: the nth Cheshire record, or only ‘n’ records this century, or only ‘n’ Cheshire records To clarify these comments, they all relate to known, submitted, validated records within the County database.

  • Leafminers Nunn & Warrington
More dots on the map: further records of leafmining moths in East Yorkshire Andy D. Nunn1 and Barry Warrington2 1Hull International Fisheries Institute, School of Biological, Biomedical & Environmental Sciences, University of Hull, Hull, HU6 7RX, UK. Email: [email protected] 236 Marlborough Avenue, Hessle, HU13 0PN, UK. Email: [email protected] The apparent scarcity of many leafmining moths in East Yorkshire (see Sutton & Beaumont, 1989) is at least partly due to a lack of recorder effort, and a number of previously presumed scarce or rare moths are actually relatively widespread (Chesmore, 2008; Nunn, 2015). One of the aims of a previous article (Nunn, op. cit.) was, hopefully, to encourage searches for leafminers in an attempt to redress the imbalance of records in Yorkshire. This article summarises our 'leafminering' highlights from 2015. A number of sites in VC61 were searched for leafmining moths (Table 1). Sampling effort varied considerably between sites. AN’s ‘leafminering’ opportunities were mostly restricted to casual observations while on family outings; BW’s focussed on sites that could be reached using public transport. The most time was spent in the Hessle area and a productive site in Hull. In October, the authors joined Charlie Fletcher and Ian Marshall for a day in an under- recorded 10km square, concentrating on the Settrington area. North Cliffe Wood was visited only in late spring and early summer, and other sites were visited briefly in the autumn. Table 1. Most notable records by the authors of leafmining moths

Abstract Additions, deletions and corrections are made to the Irish checklist of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). Elachista biatomella (Stainton, 1848) is added to the Irish list. The total number of confirmed Irish species of Lepidoptera now stands at 1480. Key words: Lepidoptera, additions, deletions, corrections, Irish list, Elachista biatomella Introduction Bond, Nash and O’Connor (2006) provided a checklist of the Irish Lepidoptera. Since its publication, many new discoveries have been made and are reported here. In addition, several deletions have been made. A concise and updated checklist is provided. The following abbreviations are used in the text: BM(NH) – The Natural History Museum, London; NMINH – National Museum of Ireland, Natural History, Dublin. The total number of confirmed Irish species now stands at 1480, an addition of 68 since Bond et al. (2006). Taxonomic arrangement As a result of recent systematic research, it has been necessary to replace the arrangement familiar to British and Irish Lepidopterists by the Fauna Europaea [FE] system used by Karsholt 60 Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society No. 36 (2012) and Razowski, which is widely used in continental Europe.
