Favoroso Regular Meeting Board of Education June 20, 2011 Page 2 The Regular Meeting of the Milford Board of Education was called to order by President Deborah O’Neill at 7:07 p.m. on Monday evening, June 20, 2011, in the in the multimedia room at Milford Middle School. ROLL CALL INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE PUBLIC ADDRESS TO THE BOARD Stephany Favoroso, elementary teacher at Ross, spoke to the Board requesting changes to the School Uniform Policy for the elementary students. Debra Elders spoke to the Board requesting they repeal the School Uniform Policy. Derek Sapp spoke to the Board requesting they repeal the School Uniform Policy. APPROVAL OF MINUTES MOTION MADE BY MR. EMORY/SECONDED BY MR. COHEE that the Board approve the following minutes of the previous meetings: Regular Meeting of May 16, 2011. Motion carried unanimously. CHANGES AND ADDITIONS TO THE AGENDA Additions to 10. Superintendent Reports, 11. Personnel and 15. Instruction and Student Programs. ACHIEVEMENTS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS Students Morris & Ross Morris and Ross donated $672 to Sipple Monument for a headstone for Gregg Smith, Jr. Ross In May, Ross Student Council sold links for Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society. Our donations were given to Cheer for a Cure, which is a non- Regular Meeting Board of Education June 20, 2011 Page 3 profit, cancer fundraising competition cheerleading group for Relay for Life. Students raised $1,000 and an additional $250 was donated by Richard Johnson Construction. On June 3, Ross had a culminating activity of linking the classroom chains together on the playground while Petch from Eagle 97.7 celebrated the fundraising with music. Ann Haggerty, a parent representative from Ross Elementary, along with the help of Dr. Glenn from the DFRC was instrumental in securing Grotto’s gift cards for the Milford School District’s ILC classrooms. Each school received a donation of $50.00 to use in their Life Skills settings. Dr. Glenn visited Ross on June 3rd to observe how the students planned, ordered, and enjoyed their pizza from Grotto’s. He plans to partner Ross with Grotto’s for future life skills learning opportunities. Middle School The following 7th graders represented their school well by taking 8 out of the 10 winning places in the Middle School category in the recent poster contest, “What I Like Best About Delaware”, sponsored by the office of Lt. Gov. Matt Denn. (Attachment No. 2). • Tressie Bennett • Ulises Castañeda • Mary Coulter • Tayvon Green • Jose Melendez • Casey Walker • Alexis Berezansky • Julisa Sandoval This contest received nearly 500 entries from Delaware students in grades K-12 and winners were chosen in several grade categories. The student council raised $350 for a walk-a-thon they sponsored to raise money for the scholarship in the name of Deejion Fullman. This scholarship will allow free and reduced swimming lessons at the Boys and Girls Club. Attached is the letter that was sent to Ms. Mendez-Zaz on behalf of the student council. Madeline Robinson & Ashley Powell were the winners of the Summer Music Lesson Scholarship. They received 8 free lessons with the Milford Music Center. Central Academy Caitlin Ruiz won the “What I Like Best About Delaware” poster contest sponsored by the office of Lt. Governor Matt Denn. A showcase to view the artwork of all the winners was held on Monday, June 6, 2011in the Tatnall Building. High School Regular Meeting Board of Education June 20, 2011 Page 4 Quinn Abbott has been named the WBOC Scholar Athlete of the Month for the month of June. The student accomplishments for the 2011 Spring Henlopen Conference, 2010- 2011 Spring All State and 2010-2011 Milford Spring Academic All Conference were recognized by the Board. Staff The following individuals completed a 30 hour course in Plant Operations and Minor Maintenance and will receive certificates of their accomplishments. Brian Attix Debra Pickett Ronnie Cannon Brad Reynolds Charles Caplinger Roger Roberts Bernard Hinton Sean Smith Courtney Messick William Webb Albert Wayne Passwaters William Beideman and Norman Reynolds have met the requirements of the National Recreation and Park Association certification and both are Certified Playground Safety Inspectors. This training is rigorous and requires a satisfactory test score at the course’s end. Carol Breeding, Special Ed Coordinator at Milford Central Academy, has been selected as a recipient of the Horace Mann Educator Scholarship. She was one of the top 36 in this year’s national competition and has been awarded a $500 college scholarship. CORRESPONDENCE None. Contract #A12-07 Sundew Painting $ 3,730.00 Damage to hollow metal frames while working on and removing the scaffolding. Deduct from Peninsula Masonry. School Counselors Presentations Regular Meeting Board of Education June 20, 2011 Page 6 Stacy Greenly-Teat, Stephanie LoBiondo, Karen Sundquist and Sheena French gave a comprehensive K-12 presentation to the Board. Presentation of Lead Academy Karen Fitzpatrick of the Lead (Leading with Excellence and Achieve Dramatically) Academy, gave a brief presentation to the Board on the program. Students and their mentors attended and spoke about the positive influence the Lead Academy has made in their lives.
