Franklin (Bud) Read (W), a member of Cohort 15, received the Distinguished Service Award from the Delaware Council of Social Studies for his efforts in pro- moting social studies education in the State of Dela- ware. Bud served for six years as co-chair of the Social Studies Coalition of DE (SSCD) and was recognized for his role in the planning and implementation of the Coali- tion’s initiatives. The SSCD is an organization comprised of curriculum leaders from all 19 DE school districts, social studies affiliates (e.g. Center for Economic Education, the Ge- ography Alliance, Democracy Project and DE Social Studies Education Project) and the education associate from the DE Department of Education. The Coalition was established to advance social studies education by providing professional development for teachers, developing lessons and assessments aligned with the standards, to initiate a Lead Teacher project (which trains social studies educators to take professional development training back to their individual districts), and disseminate information and resources to teachers through the website.. In addition, Colonial School district recognized Bud’s contributions and his receiving this award by honoring him at the June Board of Education meeting.
