Welcome to Doors Open Days 2019 This year’s event will be held over two days, Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th September 2019, allowing visitors the best opportunity to visit a wide range of properties across Aberdeenshire. We have an exciting and varied programme with more than 60 properties taking part, several for the first time. There will also be tours, exhibitions and refreshments at many of the venues, hosted by Doors Open Day volunteers. Come along and join us in celebrating Aberdeenshire’s rich architectural history! Doors Open Days is Scotland’s largest free annual architectural event. It is co-ordinated nationally by the Scottish Civic Trust and is part of European Heritage Days, a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Union alongside Scottish Archaeology Month. Both events are supported by Historic Environment Scotland. This year’s Aberdeenshire event has been organised by Aberdeenshire Council’s Environment Team, co-ordinated by Clare Tierney, assisted by Yvonne Clark, Cheryl Roberts, Alison Simpson and Frances Swanston. Our gratitude and thanks go to all those who have generously agreed to open their buildings to make this event possible and to the volunteers who have given up their valuable time. Garlogie is home to the incredibly rare and oldest steam beam engine powered mill in Scotland, recognised in its Category A listed status. The engine dates from the late 1830s and originally powered the textile millI. In 1923 a small Escher Wyss water turbine with electricity generating plant was installed in a new building adjacent to the beam engine house to provide power to the Estate. It ceased operation in 1954 when the national grid came to the area. The mill is situated in the beautiful Garlogie Conservation. On the day, visitors will be able to see around the mill building and view the beam engine and turbine, guides will be on hand to explain the operation of the equipment alongside information panels and models. You will also be able to hear about plans for the future of the mill.

Portsoy Church Centre is the new centre for The Boatshed, built upon the ruins of a the Church of Scotland in Portsoy. The Salmon Bothy was a working Salmon Bothy until the 1990s. It was renovated and opened in 2009 as a small museum and a community space called ‘Upstairs at the Bothy’. Now in its 10th year, the museum has been refreshed. Each of the three ice chambers of the Bothy contain new exhibi- tions. Chamber 1 is devoted to the salmon fishing industry telling its story and exhibiting the artefacts. It has our new children’s area and an area for viewing pictures of a bygone era. Chamber 2 tells the story of Portsoy with its famous 17th century harbour and the associated industries which developed because of the trading nature of town. Chamber 3 has been totally refurbished taking in the flora and fauna of the area and the unique geology of the area. Outside the museum is our geology wall, a new feature.
