Based on the Film 'All About Eve'. 'What is it that we're living for?' 'Applause, Applause!' These lyrics epitomize the motives of all the characters in this story about the plots and intrigues of life backstage. An aspiring young actress successfully dethrones the established star, but in the process relinquishes any redeeming qualities and becomes the producer's plaything. The star, in turn, realizes that there is another life besides the one on stage and that the applause is, after all, hollow. Provides two strong character parts for women.'

Music and lyrics by Carol Hall. 'There once was on the outskirts of a small Texas town an old, established whorehouse. The place was patronized by politicians, businessmen and the local football team. It was resolutely run by Miss Mona who made sure that if her "girls" weren't exactly ladies, they were to act as if they were. Protected by the gutsy sheriff and tolerated by the community, it thrived until a bible-belt television vigilante makes the place a statewide issue and forces the literally side-stepping governor to close it down.' Adapted from the screenplay, this musical is a lively and poignant story that captivated Broadway audiences and critics alike. It tells the story of six unemployed, out-of-shape steel-mill workers from Buffalo, New York, who need to pick up some extra cash. After seeing the popularity of a male stripper among the local women, the men decide to put on a strip show of their own. Their gimmick is simple: they will go the full monty - strip completely naked on stage. This plan forces the men to come to terms with their own fears of inadequacy, both physically and as providers for their families. Title: Full Monty, The - vocal selections

Publisher: Dell Publishing Company 1967
Description: Selections from "Idylls of the King" by Alfred Lord Tennyson and includes "Camelot". Lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner; music by Frederick Loewe. Based on "The Once and Future King" by T.H. White
"The world of Idylls of the King is essentially tragic, lightened by a few brief moments of pleasure. Camelot is a happy world, filled with eccentrics, that becomes saddened through lightheadedness and pranksterish tricks... In both works - Tennyson's moving allegory and Lerner and Loewe's lively musical play- we see a great idea brought to ruin. In the end the frailties of human nature win out. It is not hard to understand why this cycle of stories has excited the imagination of writers for nearly a thousand years" Title: In the Heights

"Gilbert & Sullivan’s well-loved tale of fairies, half-fairies, and love-besotted English noblemen, written at the midpoint of Gilbert and Sullivan’s collaboration, when both artists were at the peak of their creative powers. Sullivan’s captivating score, unmistakably influenced by both Mendelssohn and Wagner, contains some of his most accomplished and beautiful music. In the story of what happens when the entire British House of Lords comes into conflict with a band of fairies, Gilbert’s witty libretto skewers the privileges bestowed on a dim-witted, entitled ruling class and—of course—the eternal war of the sexes."

He wore a diamond in his tooth, denied he was black and claimed to have invented, single-handedly, the genre we know as jazz. Jelly Roll Morton, jazz pioneer, was a musical genius. Born a Creole of colour in turn-of-the-century New Orleans, he came of age playing piano in the whorehouses of Storyville. At the age of 15 he was disowned by his great grandmother and took to riding the rails, hustling pool and seducing women before setting Chicago on fire in the 20s with his dazzling jazz compositions. Rejected by the New York music establishment he died destitute and disillusioned in Los Angeles in 1941. This is his story .....

A musical spoof of old-time favorites like "Rose Marie" and "Naughty Marietta". It pokes fun at all the cliches of the innocent musicals our grandparents enjoyed, but it is done freshly and with flair. There are 24 songs, including thundering choruses, schmaltzy waltzes and lilting duets - all kidding and all in fun. The plot is a little bit of everything: a stalwart Captain, a lovely Mary, a chorus of simpering school girls and a villainous Indian. It pokes fun at the over-earnest heroes and heroines, dastardly villains and every coquettish soubrettes of that begone era. As a loving lampoon, it has become something of an American institution.

'In the world of music, there are two giants, and they are both women - Billie Holiday, and Edith Piaf. Piaf, the street-waif, rickety, illegitimate, became the supreme mistress of the chanson, influencing and launching almost a whole generation of French singers. She was, despite illness and personal tragedy, a supreme technician. But she was also a woman who never became inflated, never forgot her roots, and who never became involved with materialism. For her, singing was ecstasy. Miraculously, in a sentimental genre, Piaf found emotional truth. This was her genius.'

Here they meet the Amish folk, whose speech and habits haven't changed for centuries. Managing to "find humor in their odd folkways and curious dialect without ever poking fun at them", the authors take them through the Amish ritual of community life, their customs of betrothal and marriage, a barn raising, and the custom of "shunning" one who breaks the rules of the community. Of course, the dress and habits of the city folk are equally hilarious to the Amish.'

Based on the novel "Ragtime" by E. L. Doctorow. Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. This version of RAGTIME, first presented on London's West End, features a smaller orchestration and a revised text/score, so the show can be done with minimal visuals and scenic effects. This version is also ideal for concert presentations of the show. Called by Time Magazine "A triumph for the stage," and by the International Herald Tribune "the best musical in twenty years," this acclaimed musical won 1998 Tony Awards for Best Score, Book and Orchestrations, and won both the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Musical and Best Score. RAGTIME is not only a powerful portrait of life in turn-of-the-century America, but a relevant tale for today. The musical intertwines the stories of three extraordinary families, as they confront history's timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair, and what it means to live in America. This razzmatazz musical comedy is about the love affair between two ambitious, clever, funny but neurotic New Yorkers - Sonia, an aspiring lyricist, and Vernon, a successful pop composer - who first meet to collaborate on some new songs. Their songwriting partnership is a big hit, and before too long they start a personal relationship, move in together, and then the trouble begins. Sonia can't seem to break off with her ex-lover Leon, a telephone junkie who calls at all hours, and Vernon can't seem to communicate away from his piano. The couple breaks up and then makes up, all to the tune of Neil Simon's hilarious one-liners.

Music by Ralph Benatzky; adapted from Blumental and Kadelburg's play "Im Weissen Rossl".
'An up-to-date version of a grand old style of operetta. It's the story of a charming Alpine inn-keeper, her celebrated guests, and her problems in hiring a headwaiter who will not try to marry her. It is also about two fathers and their daughters, and their cross-designed romances. But most of all it's the music that makes this such a glorious show, and that has made it a lasting favorite in Europe.'

Based on the MGM film by Ring Lardner, Jr. and Michael Kanin. The story is about Tess Harding, a glamorous, high-powered anchorwoman of a network TV Morning news show. When Tess makes some derogatory remarks about comic strips on the air one morning, she comes head-to-head with Sam Craig, a famous cartoonist who, in retaliation, introduces a lampoon of Tess into his comic strip. What starts out to be a feud quickly becomes, on first meeting, a mutual attraction. This leads to romance which in turn leads to marriage; but it does not lead to harmony.'

"The opera is set in the Tower of London, during the 16th century, and is the darkest, and perhaps most emotionally engaging, of the Savoy Operas, ending with a broken-hearted main character and two very reluctant engagements, rather than the usual numerous marriages. The libretto does contain considerable humour, including a lot of pun-laden one-liners, but Gilbert's trademark satire and topsy-turvy plot complications are subdued in comparison with the other Gilbert and Sullivan operas. The dialogue, though in prose, is quasi-Shakespearian, or early modern English, in style."
