Introduction: in Memory of and in Dialogue with Antonio Cua
vincent shen INTRODUCTION: IN MEMORY OF AND IN DIALOGUE WITH ANTONIO CUA This special issue of the Journal of Chinese Philosophy is dedicated to the memory of the late Professor Antonio S. Cua of the Catholic University of America, who passed away on March 27, 2007. Cua had been coeditor of the Journal of Chinese Philosophy for long years. He was also a member of the International Society for Chinese Philoso- phy, an eminent scholar in Chinese philosophy and comparative phi- losophy, the author of many important scholarly works, and the chief editor of the Encyclopaedia of Chinese Philosophy. In its original plan formed in 2006, this special issue was conceived as a discussion of his book Human Nature, Ritual, and History: Studies in Xunzi and Chinese Philosophy, which was published in 2005, and Cua’s contri- bution to the study of Xunzi’s thought and Chinese philosophy. The current dialogue with Antonio Cua was intended in the original project and we expected also a reply from Cua at the end of this volume. Unfortunately, because of the vicissitudes and fragility of life, we failed to get it ready soon enough before Antonio Cua got too sick and I was able to collect all invited articles at a time only after Antonio Cua passed away. A live dialogue with him therefore becomes sadly but profoundly a memory of him. Indeed, philosophers never die. They only pass away. It is in this hope that all articles published in this special issue could still be taken as a spiritual dia- logue with Antonio Cua. -

As the term yue translates both “music” and “joy”, the article explores the shifting from the former to the latter meaning particularly on the basis of Xunzi’s theories, as the philosopher , in his Yuelun (On Music) uses the very term with both meanings. Being Xunzi deeply imbedded in the Confucian tradition, a key question is what yue really describes (if simply “music”, or rather “proper music” or “correct musical performance” ). Elisa Sabattini offers her own proposals for translation and understanding on the basic of a broad number of philosophical sources, directly or indirectly connected with the theories on music and its role in the “educational program” of a junzi (Confucian man of letters, “gentleman”). XIN IN THE XUNZI Hiu-Chuk Winnie Sung April, 2010 Abstract This thesis examines the theories of action, decision-making and human nature in the Xunzi, an ancient Chinese text from the Warring States period (475 BCE-221BCE). It focuses in particular on Xunzi’s concept xin (heart/mind). The discussion begins with a challenge to a widely-accepted but often unsupported assumption in the literature that human desires (yu) are sometimes set in tension against (the intentions of) the heart/mind (xin) As a corollary of this view, it is also often suggested that yu is associated with a lack of morality, while xin is the moral capacity. This thesis proposes an original understanding of yu, that is, that yu is causally inert and hence does not stand in opposition to xin, as if yu and xin belonged to two separate human capabilities or areas of function. The discussion then proceeds to investigate the nature of xin. It is proposed that xin has a natural preference for certain objects and may, in that light, initiate action to pursue or even modify the pursuit (qiu) of these objects. On this view, the basis upon which xin deliberates (lu) is not necessarily a moral one. For Xunzi, making the right decision, and doing the right thing, is the result of xin being properly trained to know Dao. On this account, both desirable and undesirable behaviours are attributed to xin. The latter occurs because xin does not fully or appropriately know Dao. An underlying assumption is that once xin knows Dao, it simultaneously understands the importance of abiding by it and will set out to do so. -

Batoon Abstract: The paper traces the significance of Leonardo N. Mercado’s anthropological perspective on the study of Filipino philosophy and argues that the significance of his perspective lies in its bringing to light the Filipino people as a group of philosophers in their own right who constructed a worldview of their own and embodied it in their languages, behavior, and mythology that provides them with a mission and vision as a nation. To justify the argument, a content analysis of the book Elements of Filipino Philosophy was done in terms of Mercado’s cultural philosophical theoretical framework, where philosophy is constructed by a group of ordinary people like Filipinos and the result is an empirical and observably unique but not idiosyncratic worldview like the Filipino worldview, ethnographic method that involves an ethno-linguistic analysis of the major Philippine languages, phenomenological observation of Filipino behavior, secondary data analysis of social scientist’s analysis of Philippine mythologies, and findings on the conceptual elements of the Filipino worldview composed of a logos that describes the mode through which Filipinos construct their world, ontos that describes Filipinos’ constructed world, theos that describes how Filipinos construct a sacred world, and ethos that describes how Filipinos construct a moral world. To extend the argument of the discourse, a rejoinder is provided in response to scholars’ criticisms and approval of Mercado’s anthropological perspective on the study of Filipino philosophy. This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Abstract A closer look at the theories and questions in philosophy of technology and ethics of technology shows the absence and marginality of non-Western philosophical traditions in the discussions. Although, increasingly, some philosophers have sought to introduce non-Western philosophical traditions into the debates, there are few systematic attempts to construct and articulate general accounts of ethics and technology based on other philosophical traditions. This situation is understandable, for the questions of modern sciences and technologies appear to be originated from the West; at the same time, the situation is undesirable. The overall aim of this paper, therefore, is to introduce an alternative account of ethics of technology based on the Confucian tradition. Amelioration 1 Introduction Recent proliferation of handbooks, companions, and encyclopaedia entries on philosophy of technology and ethics of technology has, by and large, indicated and confirmed their status in mainstream philosophy.1 If one takes a closer look at the theories and questions discussed in those venues, however, it is difficult not to recognise the absence and marginality of non-Western philosophical traditions.
