EMPOWERING PERSONAL PRIVACY: THE CONTROL OF PERSONAL INFORMATION IN THE DIGITAL SPHERE by Yong Jin Park A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Communication) in the University of Michigan 2009 Doctoral Committee: Professor W. Russell Neuman, Chair Associate Professor Nojin Kwak Assistant Professor Scott Walker Campbell Assistant Professor Steven J. Jackson Yong Jin Park © 2009 All Rights Reserved Dedication To My wife, Kyung Eun My son, Roland & My daughter, Dainna ii Acknowledgements For me, it was a long journey – filled with pain, sorrow, and solitude. And I remember my mom working in a restaurant late at night and carrying hot noodle bowels to send me the money I needed for a long time. When my mom lost her hair, weight, and got her lymphatic system removed in a hospital bed, I knew my due share of the cause of the pain. My Professor Neuman. … He was more than an advisor to me. As my intellectual father and mentor, he provided me with all the supports that I needed to complete this journey when others were in doubt. The support was not solely sharp and intellectual, but also warm and emotional one that carried me throughout my career at Michigan. All the best that happened to me at Michigan was due to his genuine support, care, and understanding. I am also deeply indebted to my committee members. Professor Kwak fully understood my strengths and weaknesses in private, but always defended, supported, and praised me in public. Professor Campbell, who raised the poignant criticism, never forgot to suggest ways to solve the problems in his generous and continuous support.

  • Boisvert-Storey-Sony Case Brief
Storey C204 Summer 2014 Case Study BE MOVED SITUATION Sony Corporation is a 68-year old multinational based in Tokyo. In 2012, the tech giant employed 173,000 people, with corporate headquarters in Japan, Europe, and America. In May 2014, the company was down to 146,300, cutting 26,700 as part of CEO Kaz Hirai’s “One Sony” plan. Recently, the firm eVen sold former office buildings in Tokyo for $156 million (Inagaki). This followed a similar $1.2 billion sale in 2013. After seVeral years of losses, Sony’s situation appears critical. In the last fiscal year, the company lost $1.25 billion. EVen the gaming diVision, where the Playstation console family (PS2, PS3, PS4) is projected to sell 17 million units this year, lost $78 million (Quarterly Results). There are many causes: Sony’s jettisoning of its PC brand Vaio, the poor performance and planned spinoff of Sony’s teleVision diVision, PS4 launch and marketing costs, the struggling PSVita, R&D costs for Sony’s Project Morpheus, and the fluctuation of exchange rate markets. For the current year, Sony is projecting a $489 million loss. How sustainable is Sony’s current business model? Will the success of the PS4 lead to renewed profitability for the games diVision and the company as a whole? Perhaps opportunities in new markets can spark a turn-around. The company’s core businesses are electronic entertainment (Sony Computer Entertainment, Sony Music Entertainment, and Sony Pictures Entertainment) and hardware (Sony Mobile Communications and Sony Electronics). Though it also dabbles in financial serVices, publishing, and medical imaging, electronics represents roughly two-thirds of the corporation’s reVenue (Sony Annual Report 2011, 2013).

  • IGDA Online Games White Paper Full Version
IGDA Online Games White Paper Full Version Presented at the Game Developers Conference 2002 Created by the IGDA Online Games Committee Alex Jarett, President, Broadband Entertainment Group, Chairman Jon Estanislao, Manager, Media & Entertainment Strategy, Accenture, Vice-Chairman FOREWORD With the rising use of the Internet, the commercial success of certain massively multiplayer games (e.g., Asheron’s Call, EverQuest, and Ultima Online), the ubiquitous availability of parlor and arcade games on “free” game sites, the widespread use of matching services for multiplayer games, and the constant positioning by the console makers for future online play, it is apparent that online games are here to stay and there is a long term opportunity for the industry. What is not so obvious is how the independent developer can take advantage of this opportunity. For the two years prior to starting this project, I had the opportunity to host several roundtables at the GDC discussing the opportunities and future of online games. While the excitement was there, it was hard not to notice an obvious trend. It seemed like four out of five independent developers I met were working on the next great “massively multiplayer” game that they hoped to sell to some lucky publisher. I couldn’t help but see the problem with this trend. I knew from talking with folks that these games cost a LOT of money to make, and the reality is that only a few publishers and developers will work on these projects. So where was the opportunity for the rest of the developers? As I spoke to people at the roundtables, it became apparent that there was a void of baseline information in this segment.
