EMPOWERING PERSONAL PRIVACY: THE CONTROL OF PERSONAL INFORMATION IN THE DIGITAL SPHERE by Yong Jin Park A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Communication) in the University of Michigan 2009 Doctoral Committee: Professor W. Russell Neuman, Chair Associate Professor Nojin Kwak Assistant Professor Scott Walker Campbell Assistant Professor Steven J. Jackson Yong Jin Park © 2009 All Rights Reserved Dedication To My wife, Kyung Eun My son, Roland & My daughter, Dainna ii Acknowledgements For me, it was a long journey – filled with pain, sorrow, and solitude. And I remember my mom working in a restaurant late at night and carrying hot noodle bowels to send me the money I needed for a long time. When my mom lost her hair, weight, and got her lymphatic system removed in a hospital bed, I knew my due share of the cause of the pain. My Professor Neuman. … He was more than an advisor to me. As my intellectual father and mentor, he provided me with all the supports that I needed to complete this journey when others were in doubt. The support was not solely sharp and intellectual, but also warm and emotional one that carried me throughout my career at Michigan. All the best that happened to me at Michigan was due to his genuine support, care, and understanding. I am also deeply indebted to my committee members. Professor Kwak fully understood my strengths and weaknesses in private, but always defended, supported, and praised me in public. Professor Campbell, who raised the poignant criticism, never forgot to suggest ways to solve the problems in his generous and continuous support.

  • Boisvert-Storey-Sony Case Brief
Storey C204 Summer 2014 Case Study BE MOVED SITUATION Sony Corporation is a 68-year old multinational based in Tokyo. In 2012, the tech giant employed 173,000 people, with corporate headquarters in Japan, Europe, and America. In May 2014, the company was down to 146,300, cutting 26,700 as part of CEO Kaz Hirai’s “One Sony” plan. Recently, the firm eVen sold former office buildings in Tokyo for $156 million (Inagaki). This followed a similar $1.2 billion sale in 2013. After seVeral years of losses, Sony’s situation appears critical. In the last fiscal year, the company lost $1.25 billion. EVen the gaming diVision, where the Playstation console family (PS2, PS3, PS4) is projected to sell 17 million units this year, lost $78 million (Quarterly Results). There are many causes: Sony’s jettisoning of its PC brand Vaio, the poor performance and planned spinoff of Sony’s teleVision diVision, PS4 launch and marketing costs, the struggling PSVita, R&D costs for Sony’s Project Morpheus, and the fluctuation of exchange rate markets. For the current year, Sony is projecting a $489 million loss. How sustainable is Sony’s current business model? Will the success of the PS4 lead to renewed profitability for the games diVision and the company as a whole? Perhaps opportunities in new markets can spark a turn-around. The company’s core businesses are electronic entertainment (Sony Computer Entertainment, Sony Music Entertainment, and Sony Pictures Entertainment) and hardware (Sony Mobile Communications and Sony Electronics). Though it also dabbles in financial serVices, publishing, and medical imaging, electronics represents roughly two-thirds of the corporation’s reVenue (Sony Annual Report 2011, 2013).

Case Study Bradley to the (Bar) Rescue Start Dates/End Dates Installed May 9, 2013 Sq. Footage 75,000 square feet Advocate Model Used/Product Quantity Two Advocate AV-30 Lavatory Systems Type of Project (New Construction vs. Retrofit) Retrofit About the Project Bradley was tapped to help revamp the restrooms of Rhode Island watering hole Marley’s on the Beach as part of an all-out makeover documented and broadcast by the Spike TV hit series “Bar Rescue.” Initial Challenges Opened in 2010, Marley’s on the Beach is an expansive indoor/outdoor restaurant located on the shores of Oakland Beach, R.I. known for live music, upscale pub food and specialty drinks. Approximately three years after Marley’s first opened its doors, owner/operator Michelle Hafers felt that the bar had yet to reach its full potential. Hafers hooked up with the crew of Spike TV’s reality series “Bar Rescue” to overhaul Marley’s interior design, décor and foodservice operations. Bar Rescue engaged Bradley to upgrade Marley’s washroom fixtures with the goals of achieving more contemporary aesthetics, improving the bar’s sustainability profile and reducing its maintenance costs. Solution After assessing Marley’s washrooms and learning about Hafer’s needs, Bradley and Bar Rescue recommended installations of the Advocate AV-Series Lavatory Systems in the men’s and women’s washrooms as centerpieces of the makeover. The Advocate is an all-in-one touchless sink that combines a faucet, soap dispenser and high efficiency hand dryer in a single unit. The Advocate’s all-in-one design enables users to complete the entire handwashing process — soap, rinse and dry — in one place and ensures that water goes down the drain instead of building up on counters and floors.

L337 SOCCER MOMS CONCEPTIONS OF “HARDCORE” AND “CASUAL” IN THE DIGITAL GAMES MEDIUM by STEVEN BOYER Under the Direction of Ted Friedman ABSTRACT As digital games have become increasingly significant in the entertainment media landscape, the terms “casual” and “hardcore” have become the primary ways to describe gaming audiences, genres, and gameplay. However, these terms are saturated with outdated stereotypes involving gender, age, and class. Focusing on industrial discourse, this thesis examines this dichotomy, emphasizing areas of discontinuity and overlap to question why these terms have become so ubiquitous in gaming discourse and what functions they fulfill for a variety of groups including the industry, advertisers, and audience members. Ultimately, I suggest that these terms need to be replaced in order to move beyond restrictive stereotypes, proposing a new framework for digital games that takes into consideration user motivation, personal investment, and historical specificity.
