  • Love, Oh Love, Oh Careless Love
Love, Oh Love, Oh Careless Love Careless Love is perhaps the most enduring of traditional folk songs. Of obscure origins, the song’s message is that “careless love” could care less who it hurts in the process. Although the lyrics have changed from version to version, the words usually speak of the pain and heartbreak brought on by love that can take one totally by surprise. And then things go terribly wrong. In many instances, the song’s narrator threatens to kill his or her errant lover. “Love is messy like a po-boy – leaving you drippin’ in debris.” Now, this concept of love is not the sentiment of this author, but, for some, love does not always go right. Countless artists have recorded Careless Love. Rare photo of “Buddy” Bolden Lonnie Johnson New Orleans cornetist and early jazz icon Charles Joseph “Buddy” Bolden played this song and made it one of the best known pieces in his band’s repertory in the early 1900s, and it has remained both a jazz standard and blues standard. In fact, it’s a folk, blues, country and jazz song all rolled into one. Bessie Smith, the Empress of the Blues, cut an extraordinary recording of the song in 1925. Lonnie Johnson of New Orleans recorded it in 1928. It is Pete Seeger’s favorite folk song. Careless Love has been recorded by Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash. Fats Domino recorded his version in 1951. Crescent City jazz clarinetist George Lewis (born Joseph Louis Francois Zenon, 1900 – 1968) played it, as did other New Orleans performers, such as Dr.

  • The Empire State of Mind
Jurnal Komunikasi Malaysian Journal of Communication Jilid 34(3) 2018: 314-325 New York, New York: The Empire State of Mind MUHAMMAD TAUFIQ AL MAKMUN ARDIANNA NURAENI Universitas Sebelas Maret, Indonesia ABSTRACT This paper aims at reading the two songs entitled New York, New York and The Empire State of Mind to see how the city of New York is perceived and campaigned by the songs. It is an American popular cultural studies research discussing the two songs which are analysed as popular media works to deliver messages to the audiences. Inge’s theory on popular cultural works is employed to examine the form, function, and methods of evaluation in a way that the songs are treated as readable cultural texts. Semiotics is also employed as a relevant approach to interpret the data. In addition, Socio-cultural approach is applied in this study by considering American history that is useful to have a deeper discussion to examine how the city of New York is defined and spread by the media through the songs. The finding shows that the two popular songs see New York as a representation of America to hold the values of finding dreamland, conquering the wilderness, and achieving individual success in a modern materialistic capitalistic America. Released in two different eras, the songs are functioned as media voicing the American thoughts and feeling toward New York City as the today’s place of dream and reshaping the society itself as well. Keywords: New York, America, popular culture, media works, song. INTRODUCTION Dream is a continuous desire of every American to give a lively energy to move for the development of the nation.

  • Midnight Special Songlist
west coast music Midnight Special Please find attached the Midnight Special song list for your review. SPECIAL DANCES for Weddings: Please note that we will need your special dance requests, (I.E. First Dance, Father/Daughter Dance, Mother/Son Dance etc) FOUR WEEKS in advance prior to your event so that we can confirm that the band will be able to perform the song(s) and that we are able to locate sheet music. In some cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is need- ed, this gives us the time needed to properly prepare the music and learn the material. Clients are not obligated to send in a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and avoided. Recently, we’ve noticed in increase in cli- ents customizing what the band plays and doesn’t play with very specific detail. If you de- sire the highest degree of control (allowing the band to only play within the margin of songs requested), we ask for a minimum of 100 requests. We want you to keep in mind that the band is quite good at reading the room and choosing songs that best connect with your guests. The more specific/selective you are, know that there is greater chance of losing certain song medleys, mashups, or newly released material the band has.

August 26, 2020 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: J.R. Cassidy (859) 431-6216 [email protected] “Pop-Pourri” (KY Derby Party & Nostalgia for Boomers to Centennials) Party 6:00 p.m. / Concert 7:30 p.m. September 5, 2020 Tower Park Amphitheatre, Fort Thomas, KY The Kentucky Symphony Orchestra concludes its 26th free summer series in Tower Park with “Pop-Pourri,” featuring seven decades of pop hit favorites of Boomers to Centennials. Prior to the show the City of Fort Thomas is holding a Kentucky Derby Party beginning at 6:00 p.m., where folks can don their hats and watch the two-minute race at the Mess Hall (6:50), or watch by phone and hear the race and festivities live on their blanket while sipping mint-julips at the amphitheater in Tower Park. Creating the live studio sound heard on radios, phones or favorite recordings (45 rpm to mp3) is the experience that the KSO’s Boogie Band seeks to emulate each time it assembles its 19 musicians and 8 vocalists. Nostalgia is the sentiment that takes people of all ages back to a “happy place.” “Pop music is an amazing time travel vehicle, which takes everyone back to fond youthful years to recall the car they were driving, who they were dating, and what was happening at the time” says KSO music director James Cassidy, who started this KSO subsidiary group 21 years ago. The band — 5 piece rhythm section, 7 horns, 8 strings are comprised of some of the most talented musicians from across the Tristate, together with vocalists, who have sung Broadway tours, studio sessions, and with local bands.

Nielsen Music has also had an amazing, transformative year. Technological advancements and new partnerships have allowed us to provide robust, comprehensive data in more accessible, customizable and useful ways in 2017. Over the past year, we received a record number of requests for Nielsen Music research and insight reports. Ed Sheeran led all artists in Canada with overall consumption and had the top-selling album of the year. Six Canadians had No. 1 albums on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart in 2017, including The Weeknd’s Starboy, Drake’s More Life, Arcade Fire’s Everything Now, Shania Twain’s Now, Pierre Lapointe’s La Science Du Coeur and Gord Downie’s Introduce Yerself. The passing of Gord Downie captured the nation’s attention. In the week following his death, The Tragically Hip’s overall consumption increased by 1,000% over the previous week. • 'Presence' in Absentia: Experiencing Performance As Documentation
39 Introduction: Amelia Jones Harmony Bench n her 1997 essay “‘Presence’ in Absentia: Experiencing Performance as Documentation,” arts scholar Amelia Jones offers a précis of her 1998 monograph Body Art: Performing Ithe Subject, while orienting the discussion toward the problematics of analyzing live art exclusively through its documentation. Listing her age when Yoko Ono, Vito Acconci, Valie Export, and others were performing key works, Jones reflects on the impracticability of her presence at these events—she was 10, or 12, or 15, etc. Her absence does not deter her, however, from critically analyzing work she did not witness. She notes, “I approach body artworks through their photographic, textual, oral, video, and/or film traces. I would like to argue, however, that the problems raised by my absence (my not having been there) are largely logistical rather than ethical or hermeneutic. That is, while the experience of viewing a photograph and reading a text is clearly different from that of sitting in a small room watching an artist perform, neither has a privileged relationship to the historical ‘truth’ of the performance . .”1 Aside from dance documentaries and documentations that fill dance history professors’ shelves, screendance has not generally been concerned with the truth-bearing mark of authenticity that Jones describes. As a discipline, however, dance is haunted by that rhetoric. Like live art, body art, and/or performance art, dance as a scholarly and practical discourse clings to the ‘live’ dancing body against the onslaught of media—even when choreographers integrate video or projected media elements into their stage-based performances.

Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Traditional Funk: An Ethnographic, Historical, and Practical Study of Funk Music in Dayton, Ohio Honors Thesis Caleb G. Vanden Eynden Department: Music Advisor: Samuel N. Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Abstract Recognized nationally as the funk capital of the world, Dayton, Ohio takes credit for birthing important funk groups (i.e. Ohio Players, Zapp, Heatwave, and Lakeside) during the 1970s and 80s. Through a combination of ethnographic and archival research, this paper offers a pedagogical approach to Dayton funk, rooted in the styles and works of the city’s funk legacy. Drawing from fieldwork with Dayton funk musicians completed over the summer of 2019 and pedagogical theories of including black music in the school curriculum, this paper presents a pedagogical model for funk instruction that introduces the ingredients of funk (instrumentation, form, groove, and vocals) in order to enable secondary school music programs to create their own funk rooted in local history.
