Architecture may very well be or become a mechanism of affirmative action towards the environment. We need to realize this, in order to avoid the prevailing, light-handed aphorism - usually leading to a stalemate - that any construction is harmful to the environment. To construct is not only inevitable, but it may become a tool of environmental-friendly action; thus leading us to acknowledge that refined taste and environment are interconnected concepts - even if this adventurous relationship is taken to extremes. That is why the houses we build in Kythnos are: Traditional: We followed the traditional building style and the island’s architecture, using compact walls, built benches (“pezoules”) and sitting rooms with stonewalls; insides with interior alcoves; wooden frame Cycladic style windows and doors painted in local colourings with ecological paint. Floors and ceilings follow the style of yesteryear, yet adapting novel techniques, totally respecting climatic, topographic and environmental parameters of the locality where they are built. Enclosing stonewalls are built with stones from the excavation, like the island’s traditional stonewalls. |CRYSTAL AEGEAN IN KYTHNOS ISLAND intro
Ecological: • We took into account the materials available in the area, and opted to use for the walls the stones extracted during the excavations, so that no transportation of materials was needed - thus avoiding a source of pollution. • We fully exploited rain water, by building reservoirs for collecting it, and through a straining filter and an ultraviolet sterilizer obtaining crystal clear potable water. • We practice biological treatment of sewage and use it for irrigation of the surrounding space, consisting of local flora plants. • We utilize materials selected on the basis of “Environmental Preference” method, ecologically labelled by certified agents; materials that are renewable, recycled or recyclable, confirmed to be safe for health - such as environment-friendly isolating materials, internal sewage and water pipes made of polypropylene or polyethylene; frames, doors, windows and ceilings made of conifer wood without preservatives; floors made of natural materials (Karystos flat stones, pressed cement plaster, etc.); electrical cables from polypropylene or polyethylene, paints strictly made of natural and ecological components; solar power exterior lights. • In our constructions we incorporate hybrid solar power systems, introducing the energy model of the future, while current power supply is reliably provided by the Public Power Corporation of Greece. |CRYSTAL AEGEAN IN KYTHNOS ISLAND intro
Bioclimatic: • While designing the houses we sought to achieve the optimal orientation for the façades and to have the largest openings facing southeast (for the sun to reach and heat the interior during wintertime) and placed most auxiliary rooms to the northwest. • We construct compact stonewalls with small openings towards the northwest for protection against cold northern winds, utilizing the building’s thermal mass in order to counterbalance temperature variation. • We provided the rooms with perfect thermal insulation using state of the art materials; humidity insulation of basement walls and double windowpanes. • Blinds, pergolas and vegetation ensure the required protection from sunrays and winds, while providing shade. • Disposal of the houses’ thermal loads and humidity is achieved by means of end-to-end ventilation through small openings on the northwest and built ventilators high on the walls, facilitating the conduction of ascending warm air. To provide hot water, solar water heaters are placed; as for the heating, there is provision for the installation of a gas boiler. |CRYSTAL AEGEAN IN KYTHNOS ISLAND intro
Hygienic, because by utilizing the appropriate materials and methods, we achieved: Transpiration of the building shell, external walls and roofs -which is critical for the hygiene of the rooms- in order to avoid accumulation of humidity and fair quality of interior air. Warm ambiance during the winter, cool during the summer; also, well-being, pleasant living conditions and high quality of life, away from noise and pollution, in a perfectly pure environment. Finally, we strived to combine tradition with modern know-how to obtain comfortable living conditions, optimal thermal conduct and energy yield. Tranquil havens ; Due to the arrangement of the surrounding area with built benches, B.B.Q., gazebos; vegetable patches for amateur gardeners at specially reserved for each property parcels of land; bicycle routes with solar energy lighting; surroundings planted with the island’s beautiful flora; an arranged communal gathering area, “an observatory of the Aegean”; a playground; rearrangement of the old threshing floor into a semi-circular “amphitheater” with three tiers of seats for amateur actors and poets… all these and many more, beautiful, romantic and ecological elements transform the trip to Kythnos into a journey to dreaming! |CRYSTAL AEGEAN IN KYTHNOS ISLAND intro

KYTHNOS
Although Kythnos is one of the Cyclades islands closest to Athens, it remains among the less explored, yet most beautiful corners of the Aegean Sea. The island is also called “Thermia”, from the thermal spring waters at the site of Loutra (baths), once the greatest attraction for the visitors of Kythnos, during the 19th and 20th centuries. The north part of the island is the most densely populated: here are the villages Merihas, the island’s port; Hora, the capital; Loutra and Dryopida. The south part of Kythnos is practically uninhabited, except for the area of Panagia Kanala, where the church with the homonymous icon of the Virgin Mary is situated, and the bay of Aghios Dimitrios, at the island’s southern end, where many Athenians have had their Summerhouses built these last years.
Kythnos has no less than 65 sandy beaches: the main attraction for the island’s visiting tourists. Most of them are accessible through non-asphalted roads, which are nonetheless, easily passable. Moreover, one can take daily cruises to the beaches on small boats leaving from the port of Merihas. |CRYSTAL AEGEAN IN KYTHNOS ISLAND intro
KYTHNOS
Kythnos’s landscape is a typical Cycladic one, dry and arid. However, the island has a particularly interesting characteristic: hundreds of kilometers of stone walls, called “xerolithia”, which are built in a local style and dominate the scenery. Another dominant element of the landscape of Thermia is the all-white churches, over 350 ,built all over the island.
The oldest findings in Kythnos date from the Paleolithic period, more specifically from the 8th millennium B.C. The island was inhabited in the 10th century B.C., by the Dryops, inhabitants of Euboea Island, who took refuge in Kythnos with the purpose of restarting their lives all over, after the hardships of the Trojan War and a series of natural disasters that occurred in Euboea at that time. The island was prosperous at the time of classical antiquity and participated in the Battle of Salamis with one trireme. This was the most significant contribution of Kythnos at the course of Greek history. After that, the island became member of the Athenian Alliance. In the following periods, it became territory of the Roman and the Byzantine Empire. After 1204, the island became member of the Venetian Commonwealth and then part of the Ottoman Empire. The island unified with the newly constituted Hellenic state in1830.
Today, Kythnos has approximately 1,650 year-round residents, who live mainly from fishing and livestock farming, and more recently, from tourism. Unlike the rest of dry Cyclades islands, Kythnos preserves its rural economy, namely cattle and lamb breeding as well as production of honey. The island is also renowned for its delicious veal and goat meat, while it produces interesting white soft cheese and high quality honey. |CRYSTAL AEGEAN IN KYTHNOS ISLAND intro
