However, nearby communities and surrounding lands are considered and used as context. ** North Slope Geographic Area Updated: May 19, 2017 Description of area The North Slope Geographic Area is characterized by remote landscapes and high elevation mountains (3,000 – 6,000 feet), including Mt. Pisgah, Richland Balsam, Mt. Hardy, and Cold Mountain. Numerous, swift-moving streams work their way down the rugged slopes to the Little East Fork and the East and West Forks of the Pigeon Rivers. Countless waterfalls decorate the landscape and tiny branches of streams rise more than 5,000 feet above sea level. These cold mountain streams provide high-quality backcountry fishing opportunities, including the native brook trout. The Blue Ridge Parkway and Forest Heritage Scenic Byway surround the remote areas of the region and bring many visitors to enjoy the diverse forests. This geographic area is entirely within the Pisgah Ranger District. Communities within the area include Canton, Candler, and Waynesville. These communities and residents of Haywood and Buncombe counties rely on the 37,913 acres of National Forest System lands in this geographic area (90,551 total acres) for many ecosystem services, such as clean water and recreation. But designating a road as a scenic byway is only one step in a continuing process to maintain and enhance these corridors and the quality of the experience for travelers. Byway visitors need basic logistical information: where the route starts and ends, how long it takes to travel the route, what services and facilities exist, and precautions or restrictions along the route. They also want to know what makes this byway special. What are the unique natural features, the cultural history, and the stories of the people or events that shaped it? Providing this information and sharing these stories requires careful planning. Every addition or change to the byway impacts its character. Designing roadside improvements with this in mind can result in facilities that complement the byway. -

Facilities Development Manual Wisconsin Department of Transportation Chapter 4 Highway Systems Section 1 Introduction and Definitions FDM 4-1-1 Background July 2, 1979 From the early territorial days and through several decades of statehood, the development and improvement of highways was strictly a function of the local governments (towns and counties). With the enactment of the revised statutes of 1849, the Legislature had conferred sufficient authority on the counties and towns for the location, construction, and maintenance of all public highways deemed necessary. It was evident that then, as now, the development and upkeep of highways was a heavy financial obligation, and assistance from the state was sought. The state government, although it had always encouraged the development of good roads, could extend no assistance to the local governments because of a constitutional provision prohibiting the state from participating in works of internal improvement. The constitutional amendment of 1908 gave authority to the state government to participate in works of internal improvement. This was shortly followed in 1911 by the creation of the State Highway Commission. From that time to the present a modern network of highways, roads, and streets has evolved to accommodate the transportation needs of Wisconsin. The present system consists of the State Trunk Highway System, local roads (including county trunk highways and town roads), and city streets. These are all classified into the various functional categories in accordance with their traffic-handling and service characteristics. Upon the local road, city street, and state trunk highway systems are superimposed the various statutory categories and funding systems, all of which will be treated in this Chapter. -

The parkway's designers, through the use of a curved three-lane road with an exposed aggregate surface, intended this highway to serve not only a means for visitors to enjoy the park but also to limit the speed and numbers of vehicles on the road itself. The parkway's bridges and tunnel, all relatively small and sparsely ornamented, reflect the desire of the planners for these structures to complement the natural environment of the Colonial National Historical Park. -

Liberty Coin Service Collecting America The Beautiful 5 Ounce Silver Quarters by Thomas Coulson The Statehood Quarter program which ran from 1999 to 2009 was im- mensely popular. It introduced millions of new collectors to numismat- ics. These new collectors were searching their change for the latest issues and eagerly awaiting the release of the quarter from their home state. As a result of this success, Congress authorized a new series of commem- orative quarters honoring important sites in each of the fifty states and six territories and possessions. The new coins were introduced under the title America the Beautiful Quarter Series. They were also known by the abbreviation ‘ATB’. The coins were first issued in 2010, and five sites were honored each year and will continue to be through 2021. There 2010 Mount Hood, Oregon are two main themes for the issues: Natural wonders and Historic sites. 5 Ounce Silver Quarter The America the Beautiful Quarter series is an intriguing collection to assemble. The coins promote awareness of so much of the Nation’s natural grandeur and its hallowed grounds. De- sign lessons the Mint learned from the Statehood Quarter series were applied to the new coins. The America the Beautiful coins are more aesthetically pleasing than the earlier Statehood quarters because of their common border design and more specific subject matter. While the State Quarters could encompass many different types of themes, the America the Beautiful Quarters had specific subjects assigned for each state before the design process. At their best, the designs are innovative and alluring. The Mount Hood, Statehood Quar- ter Obverse Denali, Hawai’i, and White Mountain issues are great examples of modern numismatic art.
