March 2016 from Past to Present, Nature Excites & Educates MARCH 2016 FROM PAST TO PRESENT, NATURE EXCITES & EDUCATES Nature continues to bring viewers an up close and personal look Learn more at pbs.org/nature at the world we live in and the creatures that share, and have Preview more Nature online at shared, the Earth with us. watch.njtvonline.org A few years ago, one of the greatest archeological discoveries occurred in South America – a new species of dinosaur, and possibly the largest land animal ever known, was unearthed in Argentina. In Raising the Dinosaur Giant (March 7 at 8pm), Sir David Attenborough takes viewers through the excavation of more than 200 huge bones, belonging to seven different dinosaurs. At 101.6 million years old and weighing more than 77 tons, this new species of giant plant-eating titanosaur is so new that the official scientific name has yet to be announced. “Like so many people, young and old, I am fascinated by dinosaurs,” explains Attenborough. The documentary also shows how a life-size skeleton of the dinosaur was built with the help of 3D scanning and CGI visuals and animation. Check it out, along with one of the original 8-foot femur fossils, in person at New York City’s American Museum of Natural History. Can’t get enough of giant extinct beasts? Check out NOVA: Ice Age Death Trap (March 7 at 10pm), where archaeologists uncovered a unique site, packed with preserved bones of mammoths and mastodons, that opened a window on the vanished world of the Ice Age. Want more science and natural history? See the challenges a young Emperor penguin chick faces from birth to independence in the Antarctic, the world’s most extreme nursery, in Nature: Snow Chick (March 14 at 8pm). And a new SciTech Now episode (March 23 at 5:30pm) examines Pando, a large grove of aspen trees in Utah sharing a single root system, one of the largest and oldest living organisms in the world. HERE’S THE STORY: DREAM NG IS FREE Here’s The Story: Dreaming is Free explores the story of actor/activist Kevin Bott, who created the collaborative, inclusive, and participatory political theater company, Doctor Reverend Ebenezer Abernathy’s Mellifluously Melodious and Medicative (D.R.E.A.M.) Freedom Revival. Modeled after the style of the crusading tent revivals of the 19th and early 20th century, the political performance project includes a musical celebration of democracy, personal freedom, and justice. Here’s The Story explores this experiment in democracy, and how the PREMIERES WEDNESDAY, performance process of the people, by the people and for the people, MARCH 30 AT 8PM can prove to be both a blessing and a curse. • Italian Americans of New York and New Jersey, a Two-Part Series Hosted by Journalist Maria Bartiromo
ITALIAN AMERICANS OF AND FEBRUARY 2015 NEW YORK NEW JERSEY The largest Italian American population in the United States influences many vibrant and ever-evolving neighborhoods of New York and New Jersey. To celebrate the lives, achievements, and culture Italian Americans have brought to the metro area, WLIW21 is presenting Italian Americans of New York and New Jersey, a two-part series hosted by journalist Maria Bartiromo. The series, a companion program to the PBS broadcast The Italian Americans (Thursdays, February 19 & 26 at 9pm), highlights this large community’s rich culture and influence, featuring interviews with experts in Italian-American history and culture and prominent Italian Americans, including New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, chef Lidia Bastianich, the late Governor of New York Mario Cuomo, singer Tony Bennett, actress Susan Lucci, former New York Senator Al D’Amato, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, journalist Steve Adubato, actor Joe Piscopo, and many others. The program is further enhanced by the personal stories, videos, and photos viewers have shared on the Italian Americans of New York and New Jersey webpage (thirteen.org/italian-americans-ny-nj). Host Maria Bartiromo (left) shares a moving testimonial about her Italian-American heritage and childhood in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, where her family owned a restaurant called Rex Manor that was named after the boat that took her grandfather, Carmine — a brick layer from Salerno, Italy — to America in 1919. Working at The Rex was a true family affair for the Bartiromos and an invaluable lesson for young Maria about the importance of having a strong work ethic.
